III. PROBLEM PRESENTED:

Jocelyn Banga was referred by Cheryl Delfin, a single mom of one daughter who was seeking for
help in support in sending her child to school and searching for group socialization.

IV. FAMILY BACKGROUND/ SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITION:

Jocelyn Banga, is a widow for more than ten years, feels helpless since her husband suddenly died in
an accident in their hometown in Zamboanga Del Norte. Her husband was hit/ grabbed by a
drunkard friend due to a misunderstanding

Her meager savings have been used up, and to make both ends meet, she went to Metro Manila to
find a job to support her daughter’s needs and to send her child to school.

She and her daughter lived in a makeshift house at Barangay Sauyo owned by her sister with eight
members of the family including her brother-in-law, who works as a casual construction worker.

She was then referred by her friend to work as a housekeeper just around their neighborhood. Until
now, for more than five years of service, she is still working to her employer. She also supports
other daily expenses of her sister’s family, since her brother-in-law’s income is not enough to
provide all their necessities.

Her child Via Banga, a second year student of Sauyo HS was recently discovered by her employer as
a talent of ABS-CBN wherein she played a child role in different shows. This additional income is a
big help for Jocelyn to also support her child’s educational expenses.

She described her child as a helpful and diligent daughter in terms of household chores and a
student who studies hard in school. In fact Via Banga is the top three of her class and considered as
the cream of the crop.

At this moment, they use charcoal as the main source of cooking; they don’t have electricity. They
are just using a lamp as a source of light and their water also got disconnected due to unpaid bills.

V. ASSESSMENT:

The Client:

There are a lot of opportunities available for Jocelyn Banga. She has steady income, but her career is
not for long term. Her employer and her child are effective sources of financial help. The client has
a positive outlook in life. She took her chances and worked in the City after the accident happened
to her husband. It is a help as well for her that she only has one daughter, though her sacrifices as a
single parent never count.
The client has the willingness to improve herself and her daughter. She even plans to have a
separated shelter for her and daughter at this moment, that’s why she works even harder to earn
more.

The Family:

Her child Via Banga, is the main reason why she strives to work, to survive and to support her child.
The casting of her child in different film/ movies is a big help.

It is a factor that living in her sister’s house adds additional responsibilities. Her income does not
augment for the nine members of the extended families including the children. Though, it is not her
sole obligation to provide for all of the basic needs of her sister’s family. Her income is still not
enough since the only income she earns is used for the other members of the family.

The Community/Environment:

The family, including Jocelyn’s daughter are living in one roof of a 20 square meter with no room,
two toilet facilities and no safety. The environment is also not conducive for more than ten family
members and is not an ideal number to thoroughly become a home of comfort.
