Increased needs for traceability and code readers
in the electronic device industry
In recent years, the electronic device industry has seen accelerated integration of
traceability for individual parts. This has led to direct part marking (DPM) of
barcodes/2D codes at a large number of manufacturers and part suppliers.
KEYENCE’s barcode/2D code readers provide AUTO ID solutions that meet the latest
needs of the market.

TRACEABILITY
BACKGROUND
When a problem occurs with a product, it is necessary to trace the cause of the problem
so that it can be prevented in the future. Make a complete recording of all the components (lots) used for
each product.

TRACEABILITY
IMPLEMENTATION
Traceability is generally introduced by the following three steps:
STEP 2 Read barcodes/2D codes on the manufacturing line to manage information such as
the inspection records and manufacturing records.
* Models that can add data regarding code quality at the same time as performing reading are
also available.
3
Even in the rare case that a component is recalled, it is possible to check its entire history
STEP from the product number. Which components have been used in which products? In which
manufacturing processes were the components inspected? When were these inspections • Traceability management
performed? What were the results of these inspections? • Work progress
management

SUMMARY
The following are the two main points regarding the introduction of traceability.
In general, reading direct part marking is difficult due to the effect of the surface glossiness
SR-1000 SR-700
and material of metal or similar substances, but the SR-1000/700 Series provides easy
configuration and stable reading, even with DPM codes.
With small electronic components, there are some cases which are not suited to labels, such as lack of space on the components to affix the labels.
In these situations, a laser marker or inkjet printer can be used to directly mark barcodes or 2D codes on the components.

COLLECTING OPERATION RESULTS
BACKGROUND
Making clear what components were manufactured at what times and managing in-process inventory leads to a decreased risk of component shortages.
What’s more, it is also easy to manufacture the exact amount that is necessary, which eliminates waste of surplus inventory. Therefore, the need for
management of production volume using barcodes/2D codes continues to grow.

The BL-1300/700 Series provides stable reading at long distances and also on lines where
reading must be performed at various angles to the target. Also, this dedicated reader can
be installed at a lower cost than image processing devices and similar equipment.
