As an active contemporary American composer, William Bolcom is regarded as a leading figure in the field

of ragtime. His piano rag, The Garden of Eden (one of his twenty-two piano rags in "Complete Rags for
Piano"), is a set that successfully presents his musical language combined with an entertaining appeal to
classical compositional approaches.

Bolcom’s suite The Garden of Eden, originally for solo piano. It consists of four movements, each a self-
contained “rag”. Bolcom arranged the third and fourth rags, The Serpent’s Kiss and Through Eden’s
Gates, for two pianos in 1994 for their première recording. The Serpent’s Kiss uses various ragtime
effects such as heel stomping and knocking on the wood of the piano in addition to aptly appropriate
tongue clicking. Through Eden’s Gates, in Bolcom’s words, “conjures the image of Adam and Eve calmly
cakewalking their way out of Paradise”.

The serpent was a symbol of evil power and chaos from the underworld as well as a symbol of
fertility, life and healing
