Hundreds attend celebration of Chinese Culture

GEORGE TOWN: Hundreds of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students, their family members
and the public held a Chinese New Year celebration recently.

The function, held for the fifth time, was to promote Chinese culture and tradition.
“ We hold this event yearly because it is of utmost importance for us to preserve our
culture. We believe it will help the younger generation to embrace their own culture,” said the
celebration’s project director Ng Ze Shen.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, was the guest-of-
honour. Also present was USM deputy vice-chancellor of student affairs and development Datuk
Dr Omar Osman.

There were performances by USM drum group, USM Chinese Orchestra and singer
Wong Choon Yean. The function also included a lion dance, beat box, twirling diabolo, face
changing, model show and fire-eating.Food, games and other stalls were also set up to entertain
the crowd.
