NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 3) which is identical with IEC 62305-3 : 2010, Edition 2.0
‘Protection against lightning – Part 3: Physical damage to structures and life hazard’
issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) would be adopted by the
Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Electrical Installations
Sectional Committee and approval of the Electrotechnical Division Council.

This standard is a part of the following series, which are proposed to be adopted as Indain
Standards:

Protection against lightning Part 1 General principles

Protection against lightning Part 2 Risk management
Protection against lightning Part 3 Physical damage to structures and life hazard
Protection against lightning Part 4 Electrical and electronic systems within structures

This series, on adoption, would supersede IS 2309 : 1989 'Code of practice for the
protection of buildings and allied structures against lightning'. The text of IEC Standard
would be considered for approval as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard
without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in
Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this

standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker, while in Indian Standards
the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

In this adopted standard, references appear to certain International Standards for which
Indian Standards also exist. The corresponding Indian Standards, which are to be
substituted in their respective places, are listed below along with their degree of
equivalence for the editions indicated:

The technical committee would review the provisions of the following Standards referred
in this adopted standard and would decide whether they are acceptable for use in
conjunction with this standard:
Standard Title

IEC 61557-4 Electrical safety in low-voltage distribution systems up to 1 000 V

a.c. and 1 500 V d.c. – Equipment for testing, measuring or
monitoring of protective measures – Part 4: Resistance of earth

The page numbers given here are not the same as in the International Standard.

For the purpose of deciding whether the particular requirement of this standard is
complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall
be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values
(revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be
the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
