Lesson Idea Name: Comparing Objects

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: MGSEK.MD.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in
common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example,
directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

Technology Standard Addressed: 6- Creative Communicator

Selected Technology Tool:

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Blogs create an equal learning opportunity for students. Blogs can be accessed through mobile devices,
school/home computers, and tablets. Students who were absent from class can catch up on any missed
material posted on the classroom blog from home. ESOL students who are still learning English will have the
ability to pause, rewind, and fast forward the material and listen to the recording as many times as they need.
The classroom blog comes with an audio transcript of the lesson so it can be read multiple times. The lesson
will also support auditory learners who benefit from hearing the lessons spoken out loud.

Lesson idea implementation:

To introduce this lesson, I will show students a PowerPoint with two similar objects. I will ask the class to
discuss and make comparisons between the objects (Which object is larger? Which object looks heavier?).
Students will work in groups to write down a list of at least 3 different comparisons for each object shown on
the PowerPoint. Students will present their comparisons out loud to the class, leading to a class discussion.

After the class discussion, students will be instructed to visit the classroom blog to access their homework
assignment. The students will use an audio clip posted on the blog to listen to the homework instructions. The
assignment will be based on math lesson on comparing objects.

Importance of technology:
This project could be completed without the use of technology but by using technology, parents are able to
become involved and look on the classroom blog to view their student’s homework assignment as well. With
technology, the audio recording is available to listen on mobile devices as well as a home computer.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

To make sure student’s privacy and safety is guaranteed, I will first ensure that I have gone through the
necessary steps provided by the district- such as age requirement, approval from parent/guardian, and the
identity or students being kept private.
Reflective Practice:
This benefits student learning because even students who were absent from the classroom have the
opportunity to more easily catch up on any missed work by being able to access it from the blog. To further
extend this lesson, I would have students record their object comparisons using Audacity and placing it on the
blog for absent students to reference, or to use as a study tool.
