11. Given the electric flux density D = 0.3 r ar nC/m in free space. a) Find E at P ( r = 2, =
250 , = 900 ), b) find the total charge within the sphere r = 3, c) find the total electric flux
leaving the sphere r = 4.

12. A uniform electric field intensity of magnitude 1000 V/m is measured underwater and points
at an angle 2 = 300 with respect to the normal to the interface between water (medium 2) and
air (medium 1). If it is known that no surface charges can exist and the relative permittivity
of water is 80, calculate the electric field intensity in air (magnitude and direction).
13. The current density in an electron beam is given by J = J0 [1-(ρ2/b2)]az A/ m2 , where J0 is a
constant and b is the beam radius. At ρ = b/3, the magnetic field intensity is given by KbJ 0 aф
A/m. Find the constant K.
14. If = 0, = 0, determine whether or not the following pair of time varying fields satisfy
maxwell's equations.
E = 100 sin (6 x 107)t sin z ay
H = -0.13263 cos (6 x 107)t cos z ax
15. A non-magnetic material with a relative permittivity of 1.5 and a loss tangent of 2.5 × 10−4
carries a 200 MHz plane wave signal. How far can the signal propagate into the medium
before (a) it undergoes an attenuation of 1 Np (b) its phase shifts by 180?
16. Communication has to be established with a submarine using a conventional communication
system at 1 MHz (in the AM radio range). Properties of seawater are = 81 0 F/m, μ = μ0
H/m and = 4 S/m. Assume that a magnetic field intensity of 10,000 A/m can be generated
at the surface of the ocean and that the receiver in the submarine can receive magnetic fields
as low as 1μA/m. Calculate the maximum range for this communication system.
PART C (4 x 10 = 40 Marks)
17. Consider two coaxial conductors that are very long as shown in fig.1. A voltage V0 is
connected across the conductors and the space between the two conductors are filled with a
dielectric material of r .
a) Assuming only the potential difference is known, find the potential distribution everywhere
between the lines.
b) What is the electric field intensity between the conductors?

18. A current I flows in a conductor, shaped as an equilateral triangle as shown in fig.2. Calculate
the magnetic field intensity at the center of gravity of the triangle (where the three normals to
the sides meet).

19. Determine the amplitude of reflected and transmitted electric and magnetic field intensities at
the interface between two regions. The characteristics of region 1 are r = 8, µr = 1 and = 0.
Region 2 is free space. The incident wave in region 1 has Ei = 1.5 V/m. Assume normal
incidence. Also find the average power in the two regions.
20. A satellite in geosynchronous orbit (37,000 km above the equator) is used for communication
at 30 GHz. The atmosphere is 15 km thick. Assume free space above the atmosphere and
plane wave propagation. Properties of the atmosphere are = 1.05 0 F/m, μ = μ0 H/m and
= 10-6 S/m. Calculate :
a) The phase velocity in air and in free space.
b) The attenuation and phase constants in air and free space.
c) The intrinsic impedance in air and free space
d) If the minimum electric field intensity required for reception is 10 mV/m, what must be
the minimum amplitude of the electric field at the transmitter? Assume that the satellite
does not amplify the signal but only reflects it, and both transmitter and receiver are on
earth?
