Sports and games are very important for us. They keep us
healthy and fit. They offer us change from the monotony of daily life.
It is a useful means of entertainment and physical activity. The laws
of sports when faithfully observed develop character and
sportsmanship and foster good will and understanding among people,
institutions, states and nation. All the developing nations are realizing
this and are spending huge amounts for promoting sports and games.
Our project proposes a MULTI-PURPOSE INDOOR
STADIUM in NSS College of Engineering Palakkad. The indoor
stadium is mainly proposed to improve the quality of sports in our
college as well as to promote the community sports. Our college has
been bagging several awards and medals in sports field since years.
So the need for an indoor stadium has been highly felt.
The climatic condition of the region points out the need of a
versatile indoor stadium. Palakkad has been facing adverse climatic
conditions. Special consideration should be given to wind load during
design. The average wind velocity in Palakkad is 39m/s. The presence
of rather high velocity winds creates hindrance to the games. The
diurnal variation prevailing is also comprehensive. The amount of
rainfall is moderate. Special efforts have to be taken to give maximum
comfort inside the stadium.
If our proposed indoor stadium functions fully fledged then this
will surely be an income for NSS College of Engineering.

OBJECTIVE
Our project deals with the functional planning and structural
design of a MULTI-PURPOSE INDOOR STADIUM. For further
development of sports and games an indoor stadium is a must. This
will surely be a boon for the students of NSS College of Engineering.
Indoor stadium facilitates sports events at various
weather conditions and this is more relevant for a district like
Palakkad where high wind velocity is prevailing. Thus the climatic
condition of Palakkad blatantly points out the need of a versatile
Indoor Stadium. Due to prevailing winds it’s difficult for sensitive
games like Badminton, Tennis etc to be played.

METHODOLOGY
1. SURVEYING :
a) Total station survey
2. Plan of the site is to be drawn using AUTOCAD
3. PLANNING MULTI-PURPOSE INDOOR STADIUM: The
whole area is to be divided then so as to include various games like
Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Table tennis etc and provisions for
amenities for players and staff. Plan of the indoor stadium is to be
drawn using AUTOCAD. This includes drainage of Multi-Purpose
Indoor Stadium.
4. STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF INDOOR STADIUM: The
structural design of indoor stadium has to be done using soft-wares
like SAP2000 and STAAD.pro.
5. DESIGN OF FOUNDATION: Soil samples from 3 test pits of
size 1mx1mx1.2m are to be collected and tri-axial test is to be done.
These results are to be used for designing foundation for the Indoor
Stadium.
6. Structural design of steel columns, steel gallery, stair-cases are to
be done.
WORKS DONE SO FAR......

1. SOIL TEST: Soil samples were taken from 3 test pits of size
1mx1mx1.2m from the proposed plot. And these soil samples
were subjected to Tri-axial shear test. With the help of the
results obtained from the tri-axial shear test we have calculated
bearing capacity of soil.

2. TOTAL STATION SURVEY:

A total station is an electronic/optical instrument used in
modern surveying and building construction. The total station is an
electronic theodolite (transit) integrated with an electronic
distancemeter (EDM) to read slope distance from the instrument to a
particular point. Ordinates of an unknown point relative to a known
coordinate can be determined using the total station as long as a direct
line of sight can be established between the two points. Angles and
distance are measured from the total stations to the points under
survey, and the coordinates(X, Y and Z or easting, northing and
elevation) of surveyed points relative to the total station position are
calculated using trigonometry and triangulation. To determine an
absolute location a total station requires line of sight observations and
must be set up over a known point or with line of sight to 2 or more
points with known location.
Advantages of total station surveying:
 Quick collection of information.
 Multiple surveys can be performed at one set up location.
 Easy to perform distance and horizontal measurements with
simultaneous calculation of project coordinates (Northing,
Easting and Elevation).
 Layout of construction site quickly and efficiently.
 Digital design data from CAD programs can be uploaded to data
collector.
 Daily survey information can be quickly downloaded into CAD
which eliminates data manipulation time required using
conventional survey techniques.
A detailed survey was conducted on the site by using total station to
get the plan of the area and interior details. The instrument was kept
at a point on the ground and readings were taken on the staff held at
different points. The back reading to previous station was also taken.
Horizontal and vertical distances, horizontal angle, zenith angle and
zenith distances were measured.
Using the readings from the total station surveys all the boundary
points and contour points are plotted and the site plan is drawn.
3. E-SURVEY:
E-survey contours generate smooth contours quickly from
point data available in CAD drawings or levels available in
CSV, XLS or from a field book without reducing the levels.
It also generates volume of cutting and filling depending on
depth of cutting/height of filling.
With the help of E-SURVEY software we have drawn a
contour map.

Contour map
And we have also got the amount of cutting and filling of earth
required.

Amount of cutting/filling required calculation

Amount of cutting = 1230.785

Amount of filling = 6551.191
4. AutoCAD Software:
AutoCAD is a commercial software application for 2D and
3D computer aided design and drafting. With the help of
AutoCAD software we have drawn the plan of the indoor
stadium.

5. STAAD.Pro Software:
STAAD or STAAD.Pro is a structural analysis and design
computer program. With the help of this software we have
modelled the indoor stadium.
