In recent times, numerous cases of suicide have been reported, as well as mental health problems, Formatted Table
most of which are left untreated. Filipinos do not have access in mental health services, leaving the
patients in worse conditions. Also, with the intense stigma regarding the issue, it triggers the mental
health sufferers to do the unthinkable- suicide. The Philippine Mental Health Law has its provisions
and here as follows: rights of service users, rights of service users' families, rights of healthcare
professionals, reinforced rights, safeguards, emphasis on community-based services; defines
services provided by hospitals and responsibilities, suicide prevention and public awareness; age-
appropriate integration into school curricula, required in health-related courses, mental health
friendly policies and programs in schools and workplaces, capacity-building, RnD. However, this
policy has its shortcomings. For example, the law does not include long term leave for mental
health sufferers, as well as the wage given to them despite of the leave. Also, this law does not
clarify the number of mental health institutions that will be built for patients that need confinement.
The said gaps have respective recommendations. For the former one, this law should provide a
necessary leave, if the condition is beyond worse with a necessary wage and must not be
replaced in his/her position. For the latter one, mental health institutions must be present in every
region and the joint budget will be taken from DOH, DSWD and national budget.
