Unit Title: Finding Sources for research Name: Hannah Kim

Content Area: English Grade Level: 9
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the strengths and limitations of
each source in terms of the task, purpose and audience; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and
overreliance on any one source and following a standard format of citation including footnotes and endnotes, CA.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

 Learn how to find credible sources for research and essays.
 Knowing the difference between primary and secondary sources through the means of activities and in practical use (thought essays/other writing
assignments)
 Using found sources appropriately in writing assignments and citing them correctly.

Unit Summary:
Students will learn how to find and use various types of sources to use for their writing assignments. They will start with learning about primary and secondary
sources as well as the importance of citing them correctly in context to copyright laws and plagiarism in their assignments. Then they will have practice in
finding the sources and looking through them to find information that pertains to their assignments. The set up of the unit is to get students ready to use proper
sources in writing assignments, so they will end the unit with writing an essay that they create on their own and use the sources they find effectively to support
their thesis statement and arguments. This is to build a foundation of skills that include writing with sources, finding sources, and properly using and citing
them.
