LAB REPORT

Date Performed: July 20, 2018

Date Submitted: July 27, 2018

I. Title: Effects of Solid substance in the boiling point of a Solvent.

II. Objective: To investigate if solid substance will affect the boiling point of a
liquid, if it is dissolved in liquid.

III. Materials:

 Water
 Healthy fruit drink
 Alcohol
 Sugar
 Thermometer
 Alcohol lamp
 Beaker
 Tripod

IV. Procedure

 First is measure the amount of liquid you are going to use.

 Then start by getting the initial temperature of that liquid.
 Start heating it up using an alcohol lamp. While using a timer to record the time it
took for the liquid to boil.
 After that, measure again another separate liquid this time add sugar (the solid
substance) and measure the initial temperature. Heat the solution up and record
how long it took for it to boil.

V. Data:

Type of Liquid Amount Boiling point Amount of Boiling point

solute added of solution
Water 40mL 3min and 35 sec 10g 3min and
57sec

Type of Liquid Amount Boiling point Amount of Boiling point

solute added of solution
Healthy fruit drink 40mL 4min and 20 sec 10g 5min and
23sec

solute added of solution
Alcohol 40mL 2min and 3 sec 10g 3min and
10sec
VI. Observation
I have observed that during the first experiment, the liquid without solid substance,
it boiled faster, meaning it’s boiling point is low, and also considering the amount that I
have place in the beaker it is really normal for it to boil that fast. But after adding the solid
substance, to the alcohol, water and healthy fruit drink. I saw that it took quite a time for
it to boil. Not as fast the previous ones were they don’t have any solute mixed with them.
I can say that these solid substance can really affect the boiling point of liquids, specifically
it increases the boiling point of the liquid.
VII. Conclusion
The data gathered from the activity demonstrated the relationships between the
amount of solute dissolved in a solvent and the boiling point of a solvent. The more solute
added to the solvent the takes for it to boil.
Among all the liquids that I have, the fastest to boil was the alcohol, followed by
water then the Fruit drink. But it was really clear that the solid substance made the boiling
point of the liquid higher. I can conclude that the boiling point of any liquid can also be
changed by adding impurities in it. Impurities include salt, sugar, and other dissolving
molecules. Generally, impurities increase the boiling point of water.
