Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The video can be played in different languages for non-English speaking
students. Turning on closed captions is an option for students who prefer to read rather than listen, and a transcript of the
video is available as well. Students will watch the video individually, so they are able to rewind, pause, etc. as much as
necessary for them to fully grasp the content of the video. There is also access to this website from any computer, so
students are able to re-watch the movie after school if they feel that is necessary. Also, I would address UDL by having
my students work as a large group, small group, and individually as they complete worksheets, watch a video, and do a
hands on project in order to accommodate for every students learning preference and/or ability.
Lesson idea implementation: For this lesson, my students would watch a 6 minute movie on caring for teeth, take a
quiz on the movie, play corresponding educational games and complete worksheet printouts, and get to practice using a
toothbrush with a toothbrush water play activity. I would introduce the lesson by playing the BrainPOP video for the class.
After the video, the students would take the associated quizzes and complete the worksheet printouts. When the whole
class has finished, students would get into small groups for the water play activity. Each group would get a tooth brush,
tooth paste, and half of an egg carton (“teeth”). As a large group, we would discuss the materials being used, the
classroom rules we should follow, and what we learned from the movie about how to brush. By taking turns, each child in
the group would get to practice squeezing the toothpaste on the toothbrush and brushing the egg carton “teeth”.
Student learning would be assessed by their quiz grades and worksheet accuracy, and the time required for them to finish
both. Based on their results, I could recognize the students that have mastered the content and the students that still
need more help. The students that proved that they understood the lesson will be able to go on to the next video, games,
and activities under the teeth category. The students that need extra help to learn the lesson will get to re-watch the
caring for teeth video with the teacher as she asks questions to check for understanding and emphasize important
content throughout the movie.
Reflective Practice: This lesson idea would be the introduction to an entire “caring for teeth” unit. The resources
provided by BrainPOP with the video are great and all of the different activities are awesome for differentiating. Some of
the activities were simple and others were much harder. It would be my responsibility to make sure I’m assigning each
student with an appropriate activity for their level of understanding. I think the hands on project is a very fun way to
introduce the unit, too. I feel like this lesson idea does a good job briefly covering all the main points of caring for teeth
and it would get the students really excited to have fun learning about the rest of the unit.
