You are advised to spend about 25 minutes on this section.
1 Fatin remembers her first bad headache. The headaches struck once a month, then
once a week. They were getting worse and worse. Fatin told her mom, who took her to the
doctor. It turned out that Fatin had migraines. Luckily, the doctor gave Fatin some medicine
to treat her migraines. The doctor also taught her how to know when a migraine is coming
5
and how to avoid them.
2 When you have migraines, you often feel dizzy or sick. Some people who are having
migraines are sensitive to light, noise or smells and want to sleep. When they wake up, they
usually feel better. Most migraines last from 30 minutes to 6 hours but some can last a day
or two. If you have migraines, you are not alone. Many people suffer from migraines, even
10
kids.
3 Migraines are not contagious, which means you cannot catch them from someone
who has them. What causes a migraine? A migraine begins when, for some reason, blood
vessels in the brain reduce in size. When that happens, the amount of blood and oxygen
flowing to the brain drops. That causes other blood vessels to expand. When those blood
15
vessels expand, they become swollen and cause a pounding pain.
4 Certain things may start a migraine attack. One of the causes is stress. Some people
like to skip meals and this may cause migraines too. Drinking too much caffeine is also bad.
Eating certain foods like cheese or chocolate may trigger a migraine attack for some people.
Getting a migraine once in a while may be annoying, but usually does not cause any big
problems. However, if the headaches last a long time and happen more often, it is advisable 20
to see a doctor.
5 The good news is that migraines can be prevented. You should follow your doctor’s
instructions like taking your medicine. You should also try to stay away from migraine triggers.
If certain foods like chocolate or cheese or caffeinated drinks trigger your migraines, it is a
good idea to avoid them. Fight stress by making a plan so you do not panic when you have a 25
lot of work to do. Regular exercise can also reduce stress and make you feel better. The more
you understand migraines, the better prepared you can be to fight them before they become
a big pain!

You are advised to spend about 25 minutes on this section.
1 When we are young, we learn that tigers and sharks are dangerous animals. We might
be scared of them because they are big and powerful. As we get older, however, we learn
that sometimes the most dangerous animals are also the smallest animals. In fact, the animal
that kills the most people every year is one that you have probably killed yourself many times
5
which is the mosquito.
2 It may seem that all mosquitoes are biters, but this is not actually the truth. Male
mosquitoes feed on plant nectar. On the other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal
blood. They need this blood to live and produce eggs. When a female mosquito bites a human
being, it transmits a small amount of saliva into the blood. This saliva may or may not contain
a deadly disease. The result of the bite can be as minor as an itchy bump or as serious as 10
death.
3 A mosquito can bite many people in the course of its life, therefore it can carry
diseases from one person to another very easily. Two of the most deadly diseases carried by
mosquitoes are malaria and yellow fever. More than 700 million people become sick from
these diseases every year. At least 2 million of these people will die from these diseases. 15
4 Many scientists are working on safer and better ways to kill mosquitoes. There is no
sure way to protect everyone in the world from their deadly bites. Mosquito nets can be
placed over beds to protect people against being bitten. These nets help people stay safe at
night, but they do not kill any mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have many natural enemies like bats,
birds, dragonflies and certain kinds of fish. Bringing more of these animals into places where 20
mosquitoes live might help to cut down the amount of mosquitoes in that area. This is a
natural solution, but it does not always work very well.
5 Mosquitoes can also be killed with poisons or sprays. Even though these sprays kill
mosquitoes, they may also harm other plants or animals. Although mosquitoes may not seem
as scary as larger and more powerful animals, they are far more dangerous to human beings. 25
However, things are changing. It is possible that one day scientists will find a way to keep
everyone safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
