Spurius Septimius Sellic

On a clear, pleasant, warm summer day in the year 470 B.C.E, I Spurius Septimius Sellic,

awoke in the city of Alexandrea. I was born in this city and I have lived in this city for twenty-

two years. This city is always a hustle and bustle but I enjoy it. My father was a cobbler and I

have taken up his trade. When my father’s business began, we were relatively poor and would

make shoes for the men and women of our beautiful city. As time went on, my father’s shoes

were in such high demand that the military made a contract with us to make Caligae for them. In

case a foreigner reads this one day, Caligae are military style Roman shoes. Since then, my

father taught me the craft of being a cobbler and I have taken over the business. I personally

make Caligae and also overlook the small number of slaves we have to help us make shoes. I am

not a rich man, nor am I of the poor, but I would say I represent somewhere in the middle class

of our Roman society. The towns people treat me with great respect for I still make shoes for

many of the town inhabitants at a very low cost. Nobles in the area however do not care much for

a simple shoe maker. I assume they see me as a dull plebian who doesn’t deserve the small

wealth I have. The Etruscans have been giving me trouble however. Due to the ongoing war with

them, material for Caligae has been scare and the military is beginning to get impatient with my

low output due to lack of resources. There is very little I can do to fix this problem. I plan on

donating some of my earnings to the military in hopes that it might aid in the fighting. I pray that

we may finally defeat the horrid Etruscans and finally be rid of their treachery against Rome.
