ABSTRACT

MAJOR PROJECT 2015

MM101| ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN

In this project’s overall content it centred mainly on designing a newly phone face that is
made of non-electronic material type. This category of design comes into hand for it is one
of the identifiable problem need encountered by most people back in our own respective
communities nowadays. Moreover, the main body of our project only deals with the
disadvantages and advantages of three different types of mobile phone face and these
features can be summarised as; physical ,economic, and environmental conditions.
Likewise, there are also some evaluations made to identify solution 3 as the best and
possible solution and to be more specific, the reasons for taking it into consideration are as
follows; locally available, less expensive and can be last long. Therefore, to conclude the
following part devices and areas contributes a greatest problem to people in our own
society.

INTRODUCTION
The use of mobile phone has been greatly important in the livelihood of the human race.
Over the last few decades, with the introduction of different types of phone faces the
competitions of designing phone faces are becoming more perspective to designers.
Likewise, this project will be base entirely on the given topic which is to design a new
phone (not electronic) face that is highly appealing. Obviously, the main intention behind
this project is based on analysing a particular situation or problems which based on phone
faces. It become common nowadays those phone faces are quite expensive and doesn't even
stay longer for about a new.

Therefore, the implementation of a new phone face has to be made in order to solve those
problems. In doing this project the formalised design processes have to be followed. This
includes; identify the need, specification development, concept design/selection and detail
design, respectively. In relation to that, some researches were made to help in developing
the possible solutions which also analysed with certain criteria. From that the final solution
will be chosen which will be designed in 3D using auto cad. These are the steps we have to
pursue to accomplish this project.

PROBLEM DEFINITION:

a) Problem:

It was comely seen that, there's no convenient way of communication ever since the
introduction of mobile phone was made. This was due to fact that people do not familiar
with those high quality electronic phone faces. Besides, electronic phone faces are too
expensive and local people find hard time to use. Likewise, it can also cause hazard effects
of radiation to human body. Also, the phone face types can easily broken and not even last
for more than a year. Therefore, simple phone (not electronic) face which is highly
appealing should be made, to cater for the people back in our rural areas. Nowadays,
communication is so important for people's lives.

b) Design Brief

Designing a new phone (non electronic) face that is highly appealing

 The material should be chosen for its locality and less expensive at a minimum cost
of $150
 It should be made of a material that can be last long, for about a minimum of 4 -5
years service
 It must be non radiation - ( have less radiation effect to human body)
 It must be simple and easy to use by local people
 It must be in standard size ( length 10cm & width 5cm) including its weight not
more than 50g

LITERATURE REVIEW
This paper literature reviews trends in residential communications, in particular how new
and developing phone phases that is highly appealing was implemented. Communication is
one of the fundamental factors behind this issue and, along with the aspect of competing at
different levels in forming new phone brand. The dialogue of this literature review will be
based on the topic, design a new phone (not electronic) face that is highly appealing.
Basically the emphasis will be on Motorola phone faces. Firstly, it will consider its brief
back ground. The discussion will then look at the advantages and disadvantages of phone
faces and some factors in relation to mobile phones. Ultimately, it will thrash out the
possible solutions of the problems.

Mobile phone comes in various brands such as, Nokia, Motorola and Black berry etc. Over
the few decades up until now, mobile industries are competing on the formation of newly
introduced phones. Each year they implement different types of phones which really
support and make mobile networks possible for people.

"For the past 80 years, engineers have thrived an invention that based on finding new ways
to solve problems and hence, by continuing to look for the new opportunities to change
people’s lives for the better through the magic of mobility and this where the introduction
of Motorola and other phones was made" [1]. Prior to that, Motorola was the name of a car
radio released by the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1930 [2]. This then later used
as a given name for Motorola phones. Motorola also provides the necessities which really
help people's lives in terms of communication.

In 1946, Motorola really helpful in the sense that it provides radio technology for the
Apollo 11's moon landing which the company found more success in the development of
their brand [2]. Also, in 1973, the industry then takes some strategies towards the new
technology which enable them to introduce Motorola cell-phones. Shortly after, in 1984
their services then start making its way into the business world. Nowadays mobile
industries were able to combine their revolutionary strength with a renewed commitment
to produce more quality products for clients around the world.

Likewise, Motorola have gone further than just to make possible users to make calls but also
regarding its expenses and how it will cater for the pockets of customers.

In addition to the tabulation results above, it shows the advantages and disadvantages of
Motorola phone faces. However, through these following characteristics it will help us to
base our main emphasis on how to improve it by re-designing it in a better way compared
to the present ones, where the inventers of that particular phone brand do not design it in a
desirable way which can be suitable for everyone. Thus, by identifying the problems of that
particular phone face, there are some of the possible solutions that the basement of this
project will put more extra modifications on it.

FORM FACTORS (Mobile phones)

Some of the factors of mobile phones which may related to the phone faces refers to its size,
shape, and style as well as the layout and the position of the phone's major components. The
three main form factors which are seen in mobile phones were as follow; bar phones, flip
phones, and sliders (Wikipedia, 2015). [5]

1.1 BAR

This type of form factor is widely used by a range of manufacturers, like Nokia and Sony
Ericsson. The bar type mobile phones commonly contain the screen and keypad on a single
face. Besides, Samsung SPH-M620 also has a bar style but a unique bar style which
comprises of different devices on the each side of the bar. Researches show that, as of 2014
roughly all mobile phones manufactured in such a way that it contains this bar factor.

1.2 BRICK

This factor refers to large, outdated bar-type phones which have large batteries and
electronics. Some mobile phones like Motorola have been designed by this factor. However,
recently due to the sizes and some other factors, mobile phones (touch screen) have
displayed with new models which offers great portability and functionality.

1.3 Touch screen/slate

This type of mobile phones is the most expensive ones. It only consists of few buttons since
it depends entirely on the touch screen and an on screen keyboard for its operation. In
1994, the first commercially obtainable touch screen phone was IBM Simon Personal
Communicator. Nowadays, there are quite a number of mobile phones which came in
touch screen slate model. Most common ones are; Apple, Nokia, Samsung and Motorola etc.

1.4 Flip

This factor was commonly associated with two sections on the phone face. It was actually
attached by hinges which permits the side of the phone to flip open. When this occurs it
improves things like;

 Enable the user to placed the phone closer to its ear and mouth
 Improving usability

Fig. 3 Shows the e.g. of Nokia Flip phone [5]

1.5 SLIDER

This factor succeeded the flip form, because it allows producers to set more keypad buttons
and facial appearance onto the phone face. Basically, a slider phone is comprises of more
than one sections that slides past each other on rails. Most unique forms have 2-way slider
where sliding either way provides the same function. For instance, Nokia N85 or Nokia
N95 are categorised under this model [5].

PHONE FACE COMPONENTS

Obviously, we know that phone faces consists of several components and some of them
were as follow;

 Screen
 Keys
 USB slots
 Frame
 Button ( Volume, on/off)

SCREEN
The screen not only exists on its own but also made up of some layers which actually make
up the whole thing itself. The components were as follow;

 Glass panel
 Digitizer
 LCD screen

THE CONDITIONS OR GUIDELINES REQUIRED BEFORE PURCHASES TYPE OF

PHONE FACES
 The most common reason that are significant in which an individual can considered
before buying smart phones may basically depends on the income assets, need of the
camera quality and processor to last long as possible until the next upgrade.
 Secondly choosing a high handset may falls along the battery efficiency
requirements in which a person can choose one with a high capacity. E.g. Like
iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S5 etc.
 Buying a cell phone means entering into a deeply personal relationship with a
highly portable physical object. That’s why it is important to think hard about how
it’s designed, since you and it will spend plenty time together. Make sure you’re
comfortable with the way it looks and this is important—feels in your hand, and
make sure that phone to be reflects your personal sense of style. This is as true for
sleek metal handsets and simple flip phones as it for rubber plated rugged handsets.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TYPES OF PHONE FACES

SAMSUNG PHONE’S FACE

The advantages of Samsung are:-

 It has a couple of key advantages

 Its body is water resistant
 It has a removable rear panel, which allows owner to replace the battery or add
memory via micro SD card slot.
 It has quality sizes 5.1 inches to 4 inches which provide a real advantage when
doing everything. E.g. viewing photos and video to browsing the web.

Disadvantages

It consists of disadvantages such as:-

 The camera works well but not low light. Also the recording capability is not
that much good though it has 13 MP sensor
 The phone has not included FM radio which is a big negative point.
 Samsung included various odd and funky software and features. So sometimes it
annoys people who look for a simplistic and one step solution service.

DISCUSSION EVALUATIONS

Firstly, one of the factors is to implement a type of phone face that are not electronics and
could be easily handle by local people in our respective rural areas. Meanwhile, it comes to
are notice that almost eighty percent of them are illiterate where introductory of smart
phones is not eligible for them to use. This is because most of the phones used nowadays
contain more applications where it seems confusing when in need to make a call or sending
messages, since communication becomes an important tool for everyone.

Secondly, the new form phone face should not consist of too many keys which are almost
closely attached to each other and also the recommended material to used should be made
of non-electronic item .In addition to this, if you compare the types of phone face used
nowadays were comprised mainly of electronic materials, therefore to avoid this there are
some best and suitable materials that are need to replaced them. Similarly, the types of
screen buttons that it should be applied to this type of arrangement buttons are meant to
have a little bit separated apart from each other rather than the original designers have not
considered when doing the design. For example, the simple Motorola button phone faces,
so in order to improve such kind, the alternative is to design phone face that have spacing
between the buttons.

Thirdly, there should be a new phone face that can be last long or in other words it can be
able to take a longer period of time before it can damaged by various environmental
conditions. Likewise, the cost of that particular material to be used too must be costless so
that in return during its end product it should be cater for the customer to buy, especially
those ones where there islands are isolated from each other plus those ones where they
really find it hard to earn money more easily.

Lastly but not the least, it is best to design a simple quality phone faces that are less
radiation effects to human body. Thus, consideration when designing types of phones
should be done before selling and distribution occurs publicly because most of the smart
phones nowadays, it consume much radiation effects to human cells since its speed to
access Wi-Fi connectivity are rapidly at high standard which are also proportional to
become risk where the radiofrequency exposure has mostly looked for an association
between brain tumours and mobile phone use [4]. This was mention because many people
using mobile phone as their part of life communication strategy. Thus; new phone face
design should be put into put into action purposely for upgrading and to reduce such
problems mention above.

MM101| ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN

GENERAL ANALYSIS OF THE POSSIBLE SOLUTION

As shown from the table above, we know that for the first criteria solution 2 has the highest
score compared with the other solutions. This was due to the fact that, it is less expensive
and can cater for the pocket of customers. The other solutions were a bit expensive and
doesn't important as the reference criteria.

For the second feature, solution 3 has the highest score which signifies that; it has a
standard size, and can be easily carried and therefore considered as important according to
the reference criterion.

For the third feature which is durability, we know that solution 1 has the highest score
which indicates that, it can last long due to its supported cover which helps protect it. In
contrast, the other two doesn't satisfy this criterion.

Another feature is safety for each of the three possible solutions. In the meantime, safety is
simply refers to the material type used to make the Phone face style. These includes, factors
like; how is the material used can be available locally? , and whether it is good for easy
recycling ,and also taking into consideration the environmental conditions that might affect
the phone face in some ways. However, by closely formulating the comparison evaluation
of the three possible solutions respectively under the selection criteria safety we came to
finally realise that solution 2 becomes the suitable one compared to the other two possible
solutions. We were able to rank these as the best one is because it really meets the
characteristics which are highly recommended as safety.

Lastly, the screen size and its quality is one of the essential criteria that we have considered
as the component of the phone face type. In addition, when comparing the three possible
solutions we came to realize that possible solution 2 has the highest score.

From all the evaluation exhibited in the result, there is one solution chosen, however, its
selection was based primarily on the selection principles, and this actually points out the
solution with the highest score where it is considered as the utmost possible solution that
satisfy the nature of individualities of each criterion. Therefore, the best possible solution
out of all the three solutions that our project will put more emphasis on is the solution
number 2.

Basically, this final solution may be used mainly by people using mobile phone as their part
of life communication strategy. Thus, new phone face design should be put into action
purposely for upgrading and to reduce such problems as stated earlier in the proposal.
