COURSE STRUCTURE

The one-year Master’s [PG] Diploma in Film-making is innovatively designed to cover the
whole spectrum of film-making – from pre-production through production to post-production
– with specialization in editing on AVID/FCP.
The programme, with 100% intensive practice and praxis-based theory, is divided into
three trimesters, each with a specific focal point.

Trimester 1: Focus on Creative Pre-production


Skills Imparted : Creative Thinking, Image Making, and Screenplay Writing
Lecture/Seminar : International / Indian Cinema, Language of Cinema,
and Film Appreciation
Software Training : Familiarising AVID/FCP with stock footages

Trimester 2: Focus on Effective Production / Direction


Skills Imparted : Planning and Budgeting, Production Management,
and Practical Direction
Lecture/Seminar : Film Genres & Movements, Great Auteurs,
and Film Trends Analysis
Software Training : Mastering AVID/FCP with actual rushes from
theatrically released films edited by B Lenin

Trimester 3: Focus on Synergetic Post-production


Skills Imparted : Editing for Meaning, Contextualising Special Effects,
and Sound Sense
Lecture/Seminar : Film Ethics, Film Economics, and Film Awards
Software Training : Imaginatively applying AVID/FCP for
most impactful narration

Industry Exposure: An innovative aspect of this programme is the systematic industry


exposure: regular face-to-face and on-location interaction with leading cine artistes and
technicians, and learning-by-assisting the veterans in actual film productions.

Diploma Film: The culmination of the one-year programme is the Diploma Film, conceived,
written, directed and edited by students themselves. The Diploma Film will serve as the
definite gate-way to the film industry.
Awards

At the end of the one-year programme, each student’s performance will be professionally
assessed by a panel of film experts, and the best works will be awarded in a public function
in the following categories:
Director Bhim Singh Award for Best Screenplay
Director Bhim Singh Award for Best Direction
Director Bhim Singh Award for Best Editing

Bridging the lacunae between the four-walled academics and actual industry, the Department
of Film-making draws the best talents in the film world into the academic fold.

B. LENIN - Honorary Course Director


A versatile filmmaker, Mr B Lenin has been in the film industry from 1962 and is still going
strong. He has edited more than 100 films in Thamizh, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and
Hindi. A pioneer in Short Films and Documentary Movement in the country, he has won
many National Awards: Best Director [Non-feature Film] for Knock Out [1993]; Best
Editor [Non-feature Film] for Culprit [1995]; Best Editor [Feature Film] for Kadhalan
[1999]; Best Director [Feature Film] for Ooruku Nooru Paer [2001].

R. VITTAL - Guest Faculty


A veteran Director cum Editor, Mr R Vittal has edited over 150 films of leading stars
including Sivaji, Kamal Hasan and Rajinikanth. He has also directed / produced over half a
dozen films. He has won several awards including TN Government’s Best Editor award,
Kalaimamani award, and Cine Technicians’ Association of South India award.

A. PAUL DURAI SINGH - Guest Faculty


Mr Durai Singh has edited over 100 films in all South Indian languages and Hindi. He has
the credit of editing the famous ‘pa series’ films of director Bhim Singh.

GANGHEI AMARAN - Consultant


Mr Ganghei Amaran, a multi-faceted film personality, is a lyricist, composer, singer, director
and producer – all rolled into one.
CLASS TIMINGS

The Department of Film-making adopts flexible class timings to accommodate various


categories of students. There will be two Shifts, and students could opt for either of them.
Each Shift will have a three-hour Core Session [09.30 AM – 12.30 PM for Shift 1, and
02.00 PM – 05.00 PM for Shift 2] on all week-days, and a two-hour Flexi Session [with
flexible timings – to be decided in consultation with students]. For those currently doing
their UG/PG Degrees, provision could be made to complete the Flexi-Session
requirements during week-ends so that their regular studies are not affected.
The Department works from 08.00 AM to 07.00 PM throughout the week. Students could
access the facilities [lab / studio / theatre] to profitably use their free time.

FEES
In tune with Loyola College’s commitment to access, equity and quality, the fee for this
world-class PG Diploma is only moderately fixed at Rs. 30,000/- per trimester. A limited
number of scholarships are available to deserving students. Students, who pay the full fees
[for all three trimesters] on the day of admission, can avail themselves of 5% discount on
the fees.

ELIGIBILITY
Anyone with a Plus Two / pursuing a Degree could apply for the Diploma. However, to
earn the Post-Graduate Diploma, a UG / PG Degree will be required.
Given the specialized nature of the programme, students will be admitted based on an
aptitude test.

15 July 2009: Interview to assess the aptitude
20 July 2009: Publication of Admission List & Payment of fees
23 July 2009: Commencement of the Programme
