It is designed to help you communicate in the practical situations you will encounter if you go to the Netherlands or Dutch-speaking Belgium. The authors have set out to provide a course that gives a thorough grounding in a number of basic language structures, whilst at the same time showing how use of these structures can be applied to a wide range of topics and situations. How does this work? The book is divided into two parts. In Part 1 a series of ten chapters, some of them fairly short, introduces you to some basic language structures. You will learn how to put together simple statements, ask questions, negate sentences (i.e. use not or no), give commands, etc. Each chapter will focus on a particular activity or activities but will also demonstrate how the language structure could be applied to a variety of topics or situations. So, for example, you will learn various forms of asking questions and then be shown how to apply them in a variety of contexts. The aim of this is to avoid rote learning of fixed expressions which can only be used in a single situation. Part 2 consists of four longer chapters. In these chapters the struc- tures you have learnt in Part 1 are applied even more widely and you are given much more vocabulary on situations and topics you will encounter in everyday life.
