Photosensitiser is the causative agent of photosensitivity. One of them is
ceftazidime which is a group of antibiotics from third generation cephalosporin group. The ultraviolet (UV) induced ceftazidime can cause the transfer of energy and electron. Both of these mechanisms will damage one of the lipids present in erythrocytes. The damage causes lipid peroxidation. One product of lipid peroxidation is conjugated diene. The concentration of conjugated diene is one of the parameters of oxidative damage of erythrocyte cell membranes and counted with spectrophotometry. This study aims to determine the effect of UV-induced ceftazidime on the formation of conjugated diene. This study was a pure experimental study with one control group and five treatment groups. The control group (P0) contained erythrocyte + phosphate buffer pH 6.8%, while the treatment group 1 (P1) contains erythrocyte + phosphate buffer pH 6.8% + UV, group 2 (P2) contains erythrocyte + ceftazidime 10% + UV, group 3 (P3) contains erythrocyte + ceftazidime 20% + UV, group 4 (P4) contains erythrocyte + ceftazidime 30% + UV, and group 5 (P5) contains erythrocyte + ceftazidime 40% + UV. The result of Kruskal-Wallis test in this study showed that there were significant differences in various groups (P < 0.05). Based on these statistical tests it was concluded that ceftazidime may influence the formation of conjugated diene in erythrocytes induced by UV.
