Selective and sensitive morpholine-type rhodamine B-based colorimetric
and fluorescent chemosensor for Fe(III) and Fe(II)

By: Lee, Sanghyuck; Jang, Hoeun; Lee, Jisuk; Jeon, Sun Hee; Sohn, Youngku; Ra, Choon Sup

The development of chemosensor materials is crucial for the early detection of hazardous
materials, such as heavy metal ions and infectious viruses. In this study, three rhodamine B
(RhB) derivs. (referred to as Rh-OS, Rh-OO, and Rh-SO) bearing a morpholine-type 6-
membered ring as colorimetric, fluorescent sensors were synthesized,
and fluorescence responses to various metal ions (Fe3+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Cr6+, Ce2+, Mn2+, Cd2+,
Hg2+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Li+, Ca2+, As3+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+) were investigated. Rh-OS,
Rh-OO, and Rh-SO exhibited high sensitivity to Fe2+ and Fe3+, with the formation of a 1:1
(ligand: metal) complex, as evidenced by the UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence
spectra. Luminescence turn-on was explained by the transfer of resonance energy from the
morpholine-type moiety to the RhB framework. In addn., the selectivity of Fe3+ and Fe2+ was
evaluated by 2D and 3D photoluminescence imaging.

Protein surface recognition with targeted fluorescent molecular sensors

By: Nissinkorn, Yael; Motiei, Leila; Margulies, David

Protein surface recognition by fluorescent mol. sensors poses an immense challenge in

supramol. recognition chem. owing to the immense difficulty of selectively targeting these
large, relatively flat, and non-contiguous domains. The fact that protein surfaces can exhibit
different charges, topologies, and posttranslational modifications that can be found in
other proteins in the mixt. is an addnl. factor that complicates targeting and
consequently, sensing specific protein surface modifications. A recent report, however, shows
that the difficulty of sensing changes that occur on the surface of specific proteins could be
circumvented by attaching a relatively non-specific synthetic receptor to a
specific proteinbinder. The latter brings the receptor near the target protein and enhances its
affinity toward its surface. Modifying the synthetic receptor with an environmentally
sensitive fluorescent reporter, along with suitable recognition elements, enables such systems
to target specific regions on protein surfaces and consequently, to track modifications that
result from conformational changes or binding interactions.

Stellar cyclodextrin fluorescent sensor for rapid detection of microorganisms

By: Wan, Yi; Zhou, Teng; Ge, Jian

Assignee: Hainan University, Peop. Rep. China

The work herein aims to develop a stellar cyclodextrin fluorescent sensor for rapid detection
of microorganisms, and screen the antibiotic systems of microorganism film antibiotics. This
complex combined with SPSS can specifically recognize the pathogenic microorganism
film. The complex combines the characteristic microorganism film. The characteristic
microorganism competition makes the fluorescent protein on the surface free, and differences
in microorganism film binding intensity and in interaction force result in characteristic
response signals. Based on the above expts., this complex can be further used for the evaluation
and screening of antibiotic mechanisms. The innovation of this work is reflected in that: with
the help of stellar quaternary cyclodextrin and fluorescent protein forming a complex,
microorganism film is detected. The microorganism film does not require any pretreatment
but simple steps. The present invention provides a ref. for solving 'online', 'portable' and 'full-
automatic' problems combining mechatronics engineering and biol. concerning microorganism
detection method.
