Life [ edit source | Edit ]

There are no reliable historical sources that tell the story of St. George's life. According to tradition
and legends, he was born into a Christian family at the end of the third century. His father was
from Cappadocia and served as an army officer. His mother was from Lod and after his father was
killed in the war, his mother returned to her hometown with her son, who had been educated herself.
Georgius continued his father's path, joined the army and ascended the ranks. At the end of his
twenties he had already been promoted to an officer and assigned to Nicodia as a member of the
personal guard of Emperor Diocletian .
According to the stories of the saints, in 302 Diocletian issued decrees forbidding every Christian
soldier in the army and obliging every other soldier to participate in the cult of the emperor and
to sacrifice to the Roman gods. St. George was commanded to take part in suppressing the
Christians but instead confessed that he was a Christian and criticized the Emperor's
decision. Diocletian tried to convert to Christianity and offered him money and land to participate in
the Roman cult. Georgius refused, and the emperor ordered his death as torture as a traitor. After
severe torture, Georgius was beheaded on the wall of Nicodia on 23 April 303 . Empress Alexandra
and Athanasius, who watched his suffering, were convinced of his devotion and converted to
Christianity, even though they knew they would be executed. The body of Georgius was brought to
Lod, the hometown of his family, where he was buried as a martyr.
St. George is one of the fourteen martyrs who help .
