Good Neighbor Festival Announces 2018 Good Neighbor Award Winners

Molly Duffy, Gary Gmur, Jennifer Broadley, Scott & Deb Bram Receive Awards
Four Middleton Good Neighbor
Awards have been given to Middleton
residents. Molly Duffy, Gary Gmur, Jen-
nifer Broadley, and Scott and Deb Bram
have all contributed significantly to our
community.
Molly Duffy started the Middleton
United Soccer program, which now has
over 900 youth members. Duffy has a re-
lationship with nearly every child and can
be found on weekends going from game
to game– and not just soccer–where she
engages with each of the players so that
they know she cares. To Duffy, guiding a
young athlete is not about the game or the
score, but about creating positive experi-
ences, modeling good sportsmanship and
mentoring children who care about those
around them.
When not on a soccer field, Duffy is
often working on the foundation that helps
orphans in Haiti and which is building a
school for 450 students. And yes, when in
Haiti she’s playing soccer at the school!
Gary Gmur is an everyday hero to his
neighbors, who say he exemplifies the
idea that it takes a village to raise a child.
Gmur, who is a father to two young teens,
is also credited with helping raise the
kids in his neighborhood. Gmur uses his
handyman skills to help a neighbor build a
patio, build playground equipment for an-
other neighbor, mow another’s lawn when
needed, and is the neighbor that helps on
moving day and who is always keeping an
eye out for his neighbors.
Thanks to Gmur’s neighborhood
watch, he saved a house in his cul-de-
sac from burning down. Gmur works
for the Middleton Fire Department, but
his saving the house was not part of his
regular workday. He noticed a fire in the
neighbor’s garage that was started by a
grill. Gmur and another neighbor extin-
guished the fire, which could have easily
destroyed the entire home due to nearby
propane tanks and flammable items.
Gmur’s quick thinking saved the house
before the homeowners knew it was on
fire.
Jennifer Broadley is the Aquatic Di-
rector at the Walter R. Bauman pool.
Broadley has had an impact on nearly
every family in Middleton that has passed
through swim lessons at the Middleton
Pool. Broadley goes beyond her job de-
scription to make the pool a truly neigh-
borly place, and to encourage the best
qualities in her lifeguards, teachers, staff,
and students.
One example of Broadley’s care for
our community is the extra work she put
in to make sure that a young swimmer
who developed a seizure disorder from
a severe form of epilepsy at age seven
would be able to participate with the
swim team. Broadley coordinated com-
munication between the Middleton Gator
coaches, pool staff, the City of Middle-
ton and the swimmer’s family to ensure
the swimmer’s safety and her ability to
continue to swim with the team. She as-
signed a guard to the child during prac-
tice and had the staff trained in seizure
response and rescue. Even open swim
sessions were accommodating for the
swimmer. After the swimmer suffered
additional setbacks, Broadley again
stepped in to help make swim part of
the child’s physical therapy. In this and
other situations, Broadley has shown a
commitment to ensure that all neighbors,
including those with disabilities, are able
to fully participate at the pool.
Scott and Deb Bram have spent de-
cades entertaining the children of Middle-
ton on Halloween night by turning their
yard into a haunted forest. Hundreds of
kids from all over the city come to their
home on Wood Road to experience the
spooky spectacular. The Brams and their
kids dress up as all manner of frighten-
ing creatures; a son walks the grounds as
a 10-foot tall grim reaper, Scott is usu-
ally manning a macabre grill, and Deb is
the witch at the front door with full size
candy bars for the brave souls that can
muster the courage to make it all the way
through the haunted path. Neighborhood
kids who’ve outgrown trick or treating
are recruited to dress up in scary cos-
tumes and hide in the shadows or lie in
wait in a creepy casket. The Brams begin
working on their haunted yard in early
October, and all of it is done at their own
expense.

Davis to Serve as 2018 Parade Marshal
Middleton’s City Admin-
istrator, Mike Davis, will
be the Good Neighbor Fes-
tival Parade Marshal in this
year’s parade, which will be
on Sunday, August 26.
Festival Trustees and
president Kristi Warriner re-
cently made the announce-
ment. “Mike has been with
the city for 20 years. He’s
been there through our
growth as a community, and
I think he’s helped engineer
much of what keeps landing
Middleton at the top of the
‘Best Places to Live’ lists,”
said Warriner. “We felt like
it was time to thank him for
everything he’s done.”
For his part, Davis is
humble about the honor.
“I’m just shocked and
thrilled to have the opportu-
nity to be parade marshal,”
Davis said. “I’m just a guy
who tries to do his job as
best as possible.” Davis said
that he thinks it’s cool to be
in the company of other
past parade marshals, such
as Shirley Abrahamson, a
Wisconsin Supreme Court
Justice and fellow Indiana
University Law School
alumni.
Mayor Gurdip Brar thinks
Davis is an outstanding
choice. “Mike has been here
since 1998. He’s made a
huge difference for the city.
He cares about the people
and he cares about the city,”
said Brar.
Though he won’t take
credit for it, Middleton has
been in the top 10 of Money
Magazine’s Best Places to
Live in the biannual small
cities category four times
during Davis’ tenure. Mid-
dleton was ranked number
one in 2007.

Boy Scout Troop 140 One of the Largest in the State

Sponsored by St. Luke’s
Lutheran Church, Troop 140
is one of the largest Boy Scout
troops in Wisconsin with ap-
proximately 80 active scouts.
The troop has achieved the
highest level of the Boy Scouts
of America “Journey to Excel-
lence” Award for several years.
Troop 140 provides a rich
program with many opportuni-
ties and outdoor experiences for
young men ages 10-17. Its goal
is to promote the three aims of
scouting: character develop-
ment, citizenship training, and
mental & physical fitness.
As Scoutmaster Ed Grindle
explains, “Boy Scouting is a
unique opportunity for today’s
youth to take ownership in the
events that shape their lives.
While there are several great
youth organizations avail-
able, this group is the only one
where the boys run the show.
They plan what to do and
where to go, everything from
activities in the outdoors to the
weekly meetings. Together as
teams (patrols) they learn how
to work and lead each other,
giving them opportunities to
gain self-confidence and de-
velop skills that they will use
throughout their lives.
“Scouting challenges these
young men both physically and
mentally to discover that they
can do so much more than they
think. As a scout, they learn
that they are part of the com-
munity and their actions can
touch so many others. I have
been the Scoutmaster of Troop
140 for over 15 years. As an
adult, my job is to guide and
provide a safe environment
for our scouts and to get out of
their way. I have the privilege
to watch and mentor so many
boys turn into outstanding men.
Our future is our youth. Hope-
fully I and the other adult lead-
ers have prepared them to make
a difference.”
Troop 140 is proud to serve
Middleton and the surround-
ing communities. Since 1959,
hundreds of Middleton area
youths have shared the values
of Scouting through outdoor
activities, leadership develop-
ment, teamwork and commu-
nity service. At least 167 scouts
have attained the rank of Eagle
Scout.

Parade Awards Back for 2018 Middleton Lions Club Serves

The Good Neighbor Festival parade committee
is excited about the Mardi Gras theme for this
year’s festival and is looking forward to seeing
how our parade entries express the Mardi Gras
spirit. To encourage some extra effort, the com-
mittee is bringing back parade awards. A panel
of judges will score each entry based on effort,
adherence to the theme, appearance, originality
and enthusiasm. The highest scoring overall entry
will receive an award, as will the highest scoring
entry in each of four categories: business/com-
mercial, community/non-profit, professional en-
tertainment and volunteer entertainment.
There will also be a people’s choice award for
one overall best entry. Voting will open when the
parade begins at Noon on August 26, and there
are two ways to vote: by commenting on social
media posts on the Festival’s Facebook, Twitter
and Instagram accounts, or by voting in person at
the Information Booth on the Festival grounds.
One vote per person per voting method.
Voting for the people’s choice award ends at
2:30 p.m., and an award ceremony will be held
at 3 p.m.
Community, Humanitarian Needs
The Middleton Lions Club is part of the largest
international service organization in the world. Its
mission is “To empower volunteers to serve their
communities, meet humanitarian needs, encour-
age peace and promote international understand-
ing through Lions clubs.” The Middleton Lions
club motto is “We Serve.”
Lions have two main fundraisers: the Jim Teff
Memorial Golf Outing, and the GNF Food Court.
100% of the money raised goes right back into
the community. Middleton Lions serve the com-
munity doing children’s vision screening. They
also support Restoring Hope Transplant House,
Lions Camp, Reach-a-Child, Middleton baseball,
Braille Library & Transcribing Services, Inc and
Cub Scout Pack 540. They offer scholarships to
local graduating seniors, and provide and service
the local used eyeglass drop box.

Jaycees Make Vibrant Art Fair Happen at Festival

Make sure to take a stroll through the Jaycees Good Neighbor
Festival Art Fair! Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday,
there are over 60 booths with handmade arts and crafts, with ev-
erything from wood and stone art to jewelry and textiles, everyone
will be sure to find something to suit their tastes.
Founded in 1975, the Middleton Jaycees is a civic organization
of young professionals (age 21-40) focused on community service,
personal and professional development, networking, leadership
training and fun! All the money raised at the Good Neighbor Fes-
tival is instrumental to the events the Jaycees plan in Middleton.
The Jaycees have created awareness and volunteering oppor-
tunities with many local non-profits such as REACH-A- Child,
MOM, Adaptive Sports USA, Habitat for Humanity, DAIS and
Heartland Farm. The Jaycees also host networking nights and pro-
vide an opportunity to make new friends and introduce others to the
local chapter. These events in addition to the monthly meetings are
open to the public. Some of the professional development events
throughout the year include educational tours and group fitness ac-
tivities. Members have gained ample leadership training by learn-
ing from other Jaycee Leaders at the national and state leadership
conventions hosted by both JCI USA and JCI WI.
Another perk of being part of the Jaycees are the member-only
social events including an annual game at the Mallard’s Duck
Blind, holiday parties, wine tastings, brewery tours and more.

(VFW) Post 8216 and its mem-
bers. Volunteering countless
hours each year, the members
of Post 8216 work closely with
other national and community
organizations as well as indi-
vidual citizens to meet unful-
filled needs. Post 8216’s various
service programs are designed
to encourage community ser-
vice, civic responsibility, and to
stimulate interest in America’s
history and traditions.
Post 8216 was chartered in
1946 and named for Private First
Class (PFC) William Laverne
“Sonny” Simon, a Middleton,
Wisconsin native son. PFC
Simon was declared Missing in
Action (MIA) and later declared
Killed in Action (KIA), fighting
with the 109th Infantry Regi-
ment, 28th Infantry Division in
the Hurtgen Forest, Germany
on 5 November 1944. Only 20
years old when lost, PFC Simon
is still missing. Post 8216 helps
keep his memory alive, along
with his family, thru the dona-
tions and services provided in
his name by the Post to the com-
munity.
With over 177 members, Post
8216 prides itself as a commu-
nity leader and is a founding
member of the Middleton Good
Neighbor Festival and has been
proud to continue to support the
goals of the Fest for over 50
years.
As part of VFW Post 8216’s
continued service to our com-
munity and county, we provide
financial assistance in maintain-
ing state and national veterans’
rehabilitation and service pro-
grams at the William S. Middle-
ton Memorial Veterans Hospital.
We also provide support to the
VFW National Home for Chil-
dren in Eaton Rapids, Michigan
where the children of deceased
or incapacitated Veterans can
live quality lives despite the loss
of a Veteran parent. In addition,
we provide civic donations to
the Middleton Boy Scout and
Girl Scout programs through the
Middleton Flag Program, and
to the Middleton High School,
Middleton Library and Swim-
ming Pools, Middleton Fire and
Police Departments, Middleton
Outreach Ministry (MOM),
Middleton Senior Center and a
host of other community agen-
cies and individual Veterans in
need.

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School
District Education Foundation will once
again hold a trivia contest at the Good Neigh-
bor Festival. The event is a great opportunity
for alumni and members of the community
to connect, and proceeds from the event will
raise funds that will be used to provide in-
spiring experiences to students in our school
district.
New this year, two separate sessions of
trivia! One Harry Potter themed, and one
general knowledge. The trivia contest will
kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday with Harry
Potter trivia, followed by General Trivia at
12:30. Each session will last approximately
an hour in the VFW tent. Teams of up to six
participants will compete for prizes and brag-
ging rights. America’s Pub Quiz will provide
an entertaining experience, with questions
separated by great music.
The cost to enter each contest is $60 per
team. Register at the Foundation’s website,

The Education Foundation was formed
in 2011 to provide inspiring experiences for
District students and staff. The Foundation
has raised nearly $200,000 for its endow-
ment fund through Madison Community
Foundation and provided another $75,000
in grants and other donations to the District.
The Foundation also sponsors the Cardinal
Alumni Network, which seeks to keep Mid-
dleton alumni in touch with each other and
our schools.
