The Safe House

1. Summarize the selection in just one paragraph consisting of 7-8 sentences.

A house is built to become home. In the story, in a middle class subdivision there’s
an open house for everyone where they can be fed get money and treated their wounds.
The girl thought that those people who visit them day and night are her relatives
gathering and talking important things especially during children's parties. Too many
faces and names that she can’t even remember. Year has passed and those people
comes more often, the girl’s mother left their house and his father was captured by the
police. She and her brother live with their grandparents, on weekends the girl sleeps in
the cell of her father getting nightmares about war. War where their house is destroyed.
Years later she realized that those peoples are the rebels against President Ferdinand
Marcos and not really her relatives knowing that no house is safe even their house.

2. What are the two meanings of the word “safe house” based on the story?

Safe house is a secret place where the rebels are safe to gather and communicate
away from the authorities in time of Martial law. They use events to cover their secret
meetings.
It is a refuge for the people who needs protection, care and treatment.

3. Explain the phrase “the man has plasters/band aids instead of nails”.

Bandages indicates that they are fighting in other group maybe soldiers of the
government that may leave wounds into their bodies while nails represent that they are
being caught by the authorities means the man that has the bandage still survive the
fighting because he only had the bandages.
