OCULAR DISEASE 1 (LAB)

EXERCISE 5
DISEASES OF THE CONJUNCTIVA

INTRODUCTION:
The conjunctiva is a thin translucent mucous membrane that lines the posterior surface
of eyelids and anterior aspects of the eyeball the word Conjoin means “to join” the part or
parts. The Conjunctiva is divided into different parts: Palpebral (further divided into marginal,
orbital, tarsal), bulbar and fornicial. The three layers of conjunctiva are epithelium (marginal,
tarsal, fornical, bulbar and limbal part), adenoid layer and fibrous layer.
As similar to other parts of the eye the conjunctiva, is prone to different inflammation
and degenerations, and other external influences like trauma, infections, chemical irritation and
allergic reactions and dryness.
Common symptoms of conjunctival diseases includes red eye, presence of discharge,
papillae and follicles, edema and scarring.
Conjunctival diseases if not treated can lead to very serious complications to other parts
of the eye which can partially impaired vision or lead to permanent blindness.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To be able to identify the different inflammation and degenerations of the

conjunctiva, its signs and symptoms and etiology.
2. To be able know the different treatment and initial management for each particular
inflammation and degeneration.
3. To be able to distinguish each inflammation and degeneration from each other.
