CONCEPT IDEAS:

I. The Flexible Housing:

- “Housing that can adjust to changing needs and patterns, both SOCIAL and
TECHNOLOGICAL.” This will serve as the very keyword for this project. The design
solution must be able to address the need for a structure that is flexible and adaptable to
other possible functions.

- “Jon Broome argues convincingly that involving people in the housing process is a
necessary pre-condition for a sustainable housing process.” In this context, he regards
flexibility is an inherit part of sustainable system, all the more reason to put it into great
consideration.

DESIGN APPROACHES:
o Indeterminacy – the deliberate provision of spaces whose function is not
predefined. This will enable for the spaces be utilized for different uses when the
need arises.

o Movable Elements – installation of removable/adjustable elements.

o House as a Furniture – design the house by treating it as a piece of complex

equipment, and then design it in the most efficient way as possible.

II. SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE

- “Development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.”

A. KEY OBJECTIVES
a. Social progress which recognizes the needs of everyone
b. Effective protection of the environment
c. Prudent use of natural resources

B. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
a. Design for Minimum Waste
b. Conserve Water Resources
c. Mixed Development
d. Use of Natural Ventilation
e. Use of Planting for Shading and Cooling
f. Harvesting Rainwater and Greywater
g. Minimizing Rainwater Runoff
h. Maximum Use of Natural Light
i. Limiting use of concrete and wood for sustainability purposes

DESIGN FEATURES:
A. Hurricane Window Fabric – a more efficient substitute to boarding up windows with planks to
reduce storm wind effects. The fabric will fit the window frames and users will only need to strap
it.

B. Pervious Concrete – allows groundwater recharge, addressing the ecologically-friendly need of

the structure. This will also help reduce flooding on the site by letting the stormwater filter
through the pavement, and in turn, allowing deep-rooted plants to absorb it.

C. Water Cistern – collection of rainwater for future use; with basic filtering system

D. Raised Elevation – raised elevation of about one-storey high

E. Increased Durability – metal fasteners and hurricane straps

F. Outswinging Doors – prevents blow-ins due to strong winds.

G. Adobe Floors – for good insulation.

H. Rain Garden - is a shallow depression in your yard that is planted with native plants that collects
the water that runs off impervious surfaces and allows it to infiltrate the soils. It removes
pollutants and sediments from water thus cleaning it. The garden’s depression allows the water
to collect in an area and give the soil a chance to absorb the water thus reducing standing water
and flooding issues. The garden also provides food and shelter for birds, butterflies, and insects,
naturally beautifying the surroundings.

I. Roof Insulation – insulating the roofs with earthbags filled with rice hulls.

J. Hipped Roofs – enables to blend with the surroundings and at the same time being storm
resistant.

POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE USES FOR THE

STRUCTURE:
A. DSWD WORKSHOPS AREA:
Self-Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran (SEA-K) - A capability-building program in
coordination with the Local Government Units (LGUs), designed to enhance the socio-economic
skills of poor families to establish and self-manage a sustainable community-based micro-credit
organization for entrepreneurial development.

Tindahan Natin (TN) Project - A national government initiative for job generation, livelihood
and food security. It provides low-priced but good quality rice noodles to low income families
through a store jointly identified and endorsed by the DSWD, Provincial/City/Municipal Social
Welfare and Development Offices of the Local Government Units (LGUs) in coordination with
the barangay and which are subsequently accredited by the National Food Authority.

B. COMMUNITY SERVICES FOR WOMEN, PERSON WITH DISABILITIES (PWDs) and

CHILDREN and YOUTH

C. DAY CARE CENTER

D. HEALTH and EDUCATION CENTER

E. PROMOTION OF RURAL EMPLOYMENT THROUGH SELF-EMPLOYMENT AND

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT (PRESEED) PROGRAMS
