10 Read the text. Then complete the summary with the correct information.
The Olympic Games
The first Olympic Games were in Athens in 776 BC. More than 2000 years later, in 1896, the
modern Olympics began. Now there are Olympics every four years. Athletes from 200 countries do
more than 30 different sports.
The Olympic flag has five rings on it. These represent the major regions in the world – Africa, Asia,
Europe, The Americas, and Oceania. The rings are linked to symbolise friendship between the
participating countries. They are blue, yellow, black, green and red. These are colours that appear in
every national flag in the world.
At the Olympics, people do athletics, judo and taekwondo. They play basketball, table tennis and
football. There is also swimming, kayaking and cycling. In 1996, beach volleyball became an
Olympic sport. Four years later, there was the first Olympic triathlon. At the winter Olympics, there
are sports like skiing and ice hockey.
In 2004, the Olympic Games were in Athens again. The United States won 35 gold medals, China
won 32 and Russia won 27. Britain won nine gold medals and Spain won three. The British athlete
Kelly Holmes won two gold medals for athletics.
In 2012, the Olympic Games will be in London. But first, in 2008, they’re in Beijing, China.
Millions of people around the world will watch the Olympics on television.
