Angiogenesis refers to the formation of new blood vessels from existent capillaries with the aid
of endothelial precursors. It is known to hold a significant and critical role in various physiological
as well as in pathological processes. Hence, various studies were made to find regulators to
prevent unnecessary blood vessel formation.
In this study, the anti-angiogenic properties of L. speciosaleaf ethanolic and aqueous extracts
were evaluated towards CAM assay. From the results obtained, both ethanolic and aqueous
extracts have exhibited angiosuppressive activity towards the CAM vascularity however their effect
varies in terms of toxicity and vascular density. The effects of their varying concentrations were
dose-dependent. Among the extracts, 100% concentration has yielded the lowest mean of
vascularity of 2.89±1.16 (89.31% inhibition) implying that the ethanol extract was found to be more
efficient in inhibiting further blood vessel formation. The results suggest that the phenolic
compounds play significant roles in inhibiting angiogenesis. Further research is recommended to
define more precisely the mechanisms involved on a molecular level as well as their pathological
relevance.
