Compressible Flow

Mid-Term Test
MIT-WPU, M.Tech Semester IV
Max Marks 20

Notes: 1. Solve Q1 and Q2 or Q3.

2. Use of NACA 2412 force chart.
3. Solve any two from Q4 to Q6.

Q1. A) Explain the sources of aerodynamics forces. [2]

Q1. B) With a neat sketch explain airfoil theory for NACA 2412. [3]

Q2. A model wind of constant chord length is placed in a low speed subsonic wind tunnel,
Spanning the test section. The wing has NACA 2412 airfoil and a chord length of 1.3m.
Free steam velocity is 50 m/s and the density of air at sea level is 1.224 kg/cubic meter.
The angle of attack is 4°. Calculate:
(i) CL, CD and Cm, c/4
(ii) Lift, drag and moments about quarter chord length per unit span. [5]

Q3. An airplane travels at 230 m/s at an altitude of 9 km. It has a smooth wing of 6.5 m x 50 m.
Estimate the power required to overcome frictional drag. Assume density of air as 0.47
kg/cubic meter and CD = 0.031/(Re)1/7 [5]
