is a system to lift, lower and suspend the drill stem in
the well bore.

1. Derrick: the drilling tower that rises above rig floor and
sub-structure
2. Sub-Structure: a large steel framework as the base
which supports the drilling tower
3. Rig Floor: a working platform over the substructure
framework for most rotary drilling operations
4. Drawworks: a powerful hoisting assembly located near
the rotary table on the rig floor
5. Make Up & Break Out Tongs: large wrenches used to
rotate sections of drill pipe, collars, etc to connect or
disconnet sections
is the “heart” of the rig instrumentation system to
provide a comprehensive view of what is happening in
each of the major subsystem.

1. Mud Pump Stroke Indicator: measures circulation rate in

stroke per minute
2. Mud Pump Pressure: measures pressure on pipe
3. Rotary Tachometer: measures relative rotary speed or
RPM
4. Rotary Torque Indicator: measures torque being applied
by the rotary table
5. Tong Torque Indicator: measures relative line pull being
applied by the cathead
6. Weight Indicator: measures weight of the drill stem
suspended and weight being applied on bit
is a system to circulate the drilling fluid from the active
pits, down the drill stem and up the annulus and back to
the conditioning area for recirculation.

1. Mud Pumps – to move large volume of drilling fluid under

high pressure
2. Shale Shaker – removes large drill cuttings from the
drilling fluid
3. Desander – removes granular waste from the drilling
fluid
4. Desilter – removes the fine formation particles
5. Degasser – removes entrained gases from the drilling
fluid
6. Mud-Gas Separator – removes larger quantities of
entrained gases that have entered the drilling fluid
is a special liquid mixture that is circulated down in the
well bore which has the following functions :

1. Provides hydraulic horse power to the bit for cleaning

bottom of the well bore,
2. Transports drill cuttings out of the hole,
3. Supports the well bore wall,
4. Prevents entry of influx into the well bore,
5. Cools and lubricates the bit and the drill stem,
6. Etc.

Three basic types of drilling fluid :

1. Water based
2. Oil based
3. Air or gas based
