Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will introduce the study of the roles and responsibilities of various occupations using the
BrainPop Jr. Make-a-Map feature to construct a chart mapping the student’s prior knowledge of Community
helpers.

Then, using the Community Helpers video as a hook, the teacher will inform the students that they will be
conducting a research project where they will collect information about the jobs people do. Students will be
challenged to remember one interesting fact presented in the video about teachers.

After watching the video, the teacher will list each interesting fact presented by the students on another map.
Students will then be divided into groups of three or 4. They will be asked to review the video one more time
and listen for one additional fact about teachers. The groups will move to separate listening stations within
the room to complete the activity. Returning to the large group area, students will add their new facts to the
list.

This will continue until there is one fact listed for each student in the class. Once the list has been finalized,
each student will be assigned one of the facts. Using the draw and write feature on BrainPop Jr., each student
will write their fact and draw a picture. After each student has finished, we will print the pictures and facts
and bind them together to make a class made book. The final book will be digitalized using the bookmaker or
other publishing software to be shared with others on the class and/or school website.

Reflective Practice:
To extend the lesson to a higher LoTi level, students will select one of the remaining community helpers
within the standards. As a team, all the students selecting the same occupation will conduct a study on their
community helper, determine the interesting facts about their person and complete a book for the classroom
website.
