Abstract
(200 words maximum)

NOTE: This is short version of the design challenge and your response. It’s your elevator speech. Make
it specific and clear. Explore the challenge and how you got there, including who, what, when, how,
where, why. Cite evidence. Make the distinction between an Abstract as your paper encapsulated (which
you should do), and an Abstract that is just your subtitle explained in more words (which you shouldn’t
do). Check out https://www.fitchburgstate.edu/academics/honors-program/education-thesis-abstracts/ for
examples. Then, explain it to someone else unfamiliar with your paper. If it passes all these tests, you’re
good to go.
This should be the last thing your team writes because it will change over time.

Table of Contents

NOTE: The Table of Contents must be based upon MS Word’s Heading 2 style; make certain
you familiarize yourselves with headings and how they work. Why this matters (example): If
you change the title in the Table of Contents, it won’t work. If you change the title in the
document itself, it will work. remember to right click or Ctl click on Table of Contents to and
choose Update Field and Update Entire Table to refresh the Table of Contents. Points will be
taken off for sloppy attention to detail.

Response to Design Challenge Criteria

Re-state the challenge question: “How might we…” Write in language that is accessible by a
general audience. Click here for an example. Describe the [product, spaces, services, or
systems] you have invented, tweaked, merged…

Documenting the Design Thinking Process

This is where you prove – beyond a shadow of a doubt – that you not only have familiarized
yourselves with the design process, but also have gone through the steps. Be specific. From the
very beginning, document your process and you won’t get into trouble later. Did you ask
yourselves hard questions, like: “How would Banksy approach this design challenge?”

Contributions of VUB Department

Which department? Who did you meet? What did they contribute? How did it (or did it not)
change your view?

Feedback from Outliers and Positive Deviants

OPTIONAL: Show the extent to which outliers or positive deviants contributed to new
perspectives.

Is it SMART?
To the best of your ability, how might this respond to SMART criteria? There is no expectation
that it will be fully prototyped, tested, and ready for market. Nevertheless,
