What is PMI?
Project Management Institute (PMI) is one of the world's largest professional membership associations
with half a million members and credential holders in more than 180 countries mostly in the USA.

It is a not-for-profit organization that advances the project management profession through globally
recognized standards and certifications, collaborative communities, an extensive research program, and
professional development opportunities.

PMI offers five certifications that recognize knowledge and competency, including the Project
Management Professional (PMP) credential held by more than 370,000 practitioners worldwide. Salaries
and career opportunities for credential holders show that employers recognize the value delivered by
trained practitioners.;

What are PMI certifications?


PMI offers a comprehensive certification program for project practitioners of all education and skill
levels. There are currently five credentials available, rigorously developed, globally accredited and easily
transferable between borders and industries.

PMI was the first organization to offer a credential specifically for project managers, certification
program remains the global standard. Developed by practitioners for practitioners and representing
diverse global audience, PMI certifications give a technical and financial edge.

The examination lasts 4 hours and includes 200 questions. Passing score: 61%.

The 5 types of certifications are:

 Project Management Professional (PMP)

PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is the most important industry-recognized


certification for project managers. Globally recognized and demanded, the PMP® demonstrates that you
have the experience, education and competency to successfully lead and direct projects.

 Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is a valuable entry-level certification for project
practitioners. Designed for those with less project experience, the CAPM demonstrates your
understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology and processes of effective project
management.

 Program Management Professional (PgMP)

PMI’s Program Management Professional (PgMP) credential recognizes the advanced experience and skill
of program managers. Globally recognized and demanded, the PgMP demonstrates your proven
competency to oversee multiple, related projects and their resources to achieve strategic business goals.

 PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)

PMI’s Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) credential is a response to the project management’s increasing


growth, complexity and diversity. Globally recognized and demanded, the PMI-SP fills the need for a
specialist role in project scheduling.

 PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)

PMI’s Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) credential is a response to project management’s


increasing growth, complexity and diversity. Globally recognized and demanded, the PMI-RMP fills the
need for a specialist role in project risk management.

International Project Management Association (IPMA):
About IPMA
o IPMA is a world leading non-profit making project management organisation. IPMA represents more
than 50 project management associations from all continents of the world.
o IPMA actively promotes project management to businesses and organisations around the world. In
order to increase the recognition of the profession, we certify project managers, award successful
project teams and research projects, and provide a number of project management publications.   
o IPMA has spread from Europe to North and South America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia,
and the number of member associations is steadily growing. Through IPMA project managers from all
cultures and all parts of the world can network, share ideas and bring project management forward in
good co-operation.

How IPMA is run?
IPMA consists of a Council of Delegates, an Executive Board, several Management Boards, working and project
groups and a Secretariat. The Council and Board Members come from all over the world and reflect the
international nature of IPMA. 
The philosophy of the organisation is to achieve agreement by consensus and to avoid voting procedures as
often as possible.

 Council of Delegates
The Council of Delegates is the steering committee of IPMA and the highest decision making body. Each
member association nominates one Council representative and one alternate, who attend the Council
meetings twice a year.

The Council of Delegates' main tasks are:


● Decides on the constitution of IPMA
● Approves the two-year plans (“Biennial Plan”)
● Elects the President of IPMA (chairman of the Executive Board)
● Elects all the other members of the Executive Board
● Accepts new members
● Evaluates the progress of all internal projects and results of the ongoing activities

 Executive Board
The Executive Board is responsible for the operational management of IPMA and sets the practical guidelines
for all approved activities. It organises the internal administration, assesses new candidates for membership
and represents IPMA in all external relations.
The Executive Board is deeply committed to promoting project management competences globally and the
Board Members reflect the international character of IPMA.

 Management Boards
The activities of IPMA are supported by several management boards:
o Award Management Board
o Certification Validation Management Board
o Education and Training Management Board
o Research Management Board
o Young Crew Management Board

 Secretariat
The Secreatariat is responsible for the professional administration of IPMA. It is the primary point of contact
for all enquiries. The Secretariat reports to the Executive Board and Secretary General.

The permanent Secretariat of the IPMA is based in the Netherlands. The Chief Administrative Officer for the
Secretariat is Mrs. Christianne Janssens.

The IPMA certification:


Is used mostly in Western Europe (France, Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom and Austria).

There are four types of certifications: 

 - Level A : Certified Project Director 


o Is responsible for the management of a complex portfolio of a company / organisation or a branch of
the organisation, or for the management of one or more important programmes.
o Contributes to strategy and makes proposals to senior management. Develops project management
personnel and coaches project managers to improve their competence in PM.
o Directs senior project managers and project managers and manages the members of the portfolio or
programme team.
o Develops and implements project management requirements, culture, processes, methods,
techniques, tools, handbooks, guidelines for his programme or portfolio.

 - Level B : Certified Project Manager 


o Is responsible for all project management aspects of a complex project and all project management
competence elements.
o Has a general management role in a large project management team and leads managers of sub-
projects.
o Uses adequate project management processes, methods, techniques and tools.

 - Level C : Certified Project Management Professional 


o Shall be able to manage projects with limited complexity, 
and / or to assist the manager of a complex project in all compe¬tence elements of project
management (core competence).
o Is responsible for managing a project with limited complexity in all its aspects, or for managing a sub-
project of a complex project.
o Applies common project management processes, methods, techniques and tools.

 - Level D : Certified Project Management Practitioner


o Can practice in any competence element. May work in some fields as a specialist.
o Works as a project team member or a member of the project management staff.
o Has broad project management knowledge and the ability to apply it.

The D-level exam is a written examination that lasts three hours. The A-, B- and C-level exams consist in a two-
hour-long oral examination, where examinees report on the project they have conducted.

-  Candidates who want their know-how in project management to be recognized and valorized.
-  Candidates who want to obtain a certification that is not only based on knowledge, but also on experience.
-  Candidates whose companies are oriented towards the IPMA certification.
