Question 1: A radial flow pump running at 900 rpm develops a total head of 27 m.

The flow velocity and

blade angle at the exit are 3 m/sec and 45o respectively. Determine the impeller diameter assuming purely
radial flow at the inlet.
Ans 1: Impeller Diameter = 0.3787 m

Question 2: A radial flow pump running at 900 rpm delivers 0.3 m3 of water per second against a head of
25 m. Water enters the impeller radially at the speed of 3 m/sec and it remains constant along the flow. If
the manometric efficiency of the pump is 82% and the blade angle at the impeller exit is 25 o, determine
the diameter and width of the impeller.
Ans 2: Diameter of impeller = 0.442 m
Width of the impeller = 0.0721 m

Question 3: A radial flow pump with outer diameter 0.6 m and inner diameter 0.3 m runs at 900 rpm. The
discharge of the pump against a head of 55 m is 0.2 m3/sec. Water enters the pump radially and the flow
velocity remains constant along the flow. The peripheral area for flow is 0.066 m2 and the blade angle at
the impeller exit is 25o. Determine the manometric efficiency and the blade angle at the inlet.
Ans 3: Manometric efficiency = 87.73%
Blade angle at inlet = 120

Question 4: A radial flow pump running at 1500 rpm has an impeller diameter of 0.5 m. The backward
curved blade outlet angle is 30° to the tangent. The flow velocity at outlet is 12 m/s. Determine the static
head through which water will be lifted. In case a diffuser reduces the outlet velocity to 30% of the
velocity at the impeller outlet, what will be the increase in the static head. The whirl at the inlet is zero.
Ans 4: If the diffuser is not used, static head = 49.23 m

With the use of diffuser, static head = 71.74 m

Increase in the static head = 71.74 – 49.23 m = 22.51 m

Question 5: The impeller of a radial flow pump has a diameter of 0.15 m and axial width at outlet of 20
mm. The blades are swept backwards and inclined at 25° to the tangent to the periphery. The flow rate
through the impeller is 9.0 m3h-1 when it rotates at 750 rev min-1. Calculate the head developed by the
pump when handling water and assuming one-dimensional ideal flow theory.

Ans 5: The theoretical head given by the Euler’s equation = Hth = 3.19 m
