Nitish Kumar first – rated for the K Veeramani Award for Social Justice 2015
Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has been selected for the K Veeramani Award for Social
Justice 2015 for his contribution towards social justice as Chief Minister.
• The award will be presented by Periyar International, a Chicago-based voluntary
organisation at an award function, the venue of which is yet to be decided.
• The award carries a plaque and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Railway Minister initiated train route between Patna to Ara region having Mainline Electric

Radha Mohan Singh launches a web based App CMRS for better crop and Nutrient
management released for Bihar farmers
i. The Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh launched Crop
Manager for Rice-based Systems (CMRS) App for better crop and Nutrient management
for Bihar farmers in a program organised at ICAR-RCER in Patna.
ii. The App will be a part of Digital India program and will be linked with Soil Health scheme for
bringing access to new technologies to rural India. The App had been already launched by the
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
iii. CMRS is a web-based App that can be used with computer, mobile and tablet and aims to
increase farmer’s net income and sustain the productivity for rice-based cropping systems in
Bihar, India.
Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari Sworn in as Chief Justice Of Patna High Court
i. Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari was sworn in as the 39th Chief Justice of Patna High Court by
Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind at a function in Raj Bhawan.
ii. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his Deputy Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Leader of Opposition in
Legislative Council Sushil Kumar Modi, Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Council Chairman
Awadhesh Narain Singh and others were present at the occasion.
Bihar signs MoU with Bangkok firm for disaster risk reduction
i. Bihar government signed a MoU with Bangkok-based Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre
(ADPC) to implement the Roadmap for Disaster Risk Reduction in Bihar (2015-30). The move will
help reduce disaster risk management in the state.
ii. The ADPC centre will deliver technical assistance to implement the Roadmap for Disaster Risk
Reduction in Bihar (2015-30).
iii. One of the targets of the roadmap is bring down the loss of human lives in natural

Bihar enacts Draconian Excise and Prohibition Bill, 2016 to restrict Alcohol Usage
A rigorous Bihar Excise and Prohibition Bill, 2016, was passed in the state Assembly of Bihar by
voice vote amidst boycott by Opposition over the state government’s rejection of their proposals
in the over three hour-long debate on the legislation on August 1.
i. Prohibition on the manufacture, sale, storage and consumption of alcohol was imposed in Bihar
earlier in 2016, by amending the Bihar Excise Act, 1915. The Bill replaces the 1915 Act and
the Bihar Prohibition Act, 1938.
ii. The Bill outlines the following process to be followed in case an offence is committed:
♦ If a person is found to have committed any offence under the Bill (such as consumption, storage
or possession of alcohol), any authorized person (such as the District Collector, Excise Officer, and
Superintendent of Police) may take action against the offender.
♦ The Bill allows an authorized person to arrest the offender without a warrant. Alcohol, any
material or conveyance mode used for the offence may be confiscated or destroyed by
the authorized person.

First International Sikh Conclave started in Bihar, ahead of 350th birth anniversary
celebration of Guru Gobind Singh
i. Nearly 150 Sikh luminaries from India and abroad were participated in the first three-day
international Sikh conclave in Patna.
ii. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that the state government was organised this
conclave ahead of the 350th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th
Sikh guru, in Patna Sahib.
iii. Scholars, artists, businessmen, politicians from India and countries like Canada, UK, USA,
Myanmar and New Zealand were participated in the conclave.
iv. Nitish Kumar also announced a three-day state holiday during the festival, known as
‘Prakash-Parv’, and which was celebrated at Takht Sri Harmandir Patna Sahib, the birthplace
of the 10th Guru.

Centre constitutes A .K. Sinha expert committee to study silt in river Ganga in Bihar
i. The Central Government has constituted an expert committee of four members to study
the silt in the river.
ii. The Centre will send a team to Bihar to study silt in river the river. In a letter addressed to
Bihar government said that the team has been instructed to submit its report within 10 days.
iii. Member of Ganga Flood Control commission A .K. Sinha has been made Chairman of the
committee. The committee includes Chief Engineer of Central Water Commission S.K.Sahu, Prof.
of IIT, A.K. Gosain and members of National Disaster Management Authority Dr. Rajnish Ranjan.
