Introduction

The Subject ECCI University Lectureship, proposes to introduce students to the fundamental
aspects of the university`s instructive project, so that the educational actors: students,
teachers, parents and the community in general, can be in accordance with the principles
and values that are used to strengthen the academic activities of the institution.

In this way, the importance of ECCI University Lectureship is related to the search of
coherence amongst the actions of all the agents of the educational community, with the
formational purposes that were conceived with in the university’s beginnings and that have
strengthen along the 37 years of educational activities.

To accomplish this effect, in this curse three big topics will be developed which contain the
mission principles, the recognition of the institution and the ethical and citizenship
commitments which identify the members of ECCI University community. In the first subject
called: education with human quality, deals with the compression of the person as a
transcendent being, the primordial values and the principles for social harmony. In the
second subject, the appropriation of the institutional symbols is promoted. Finally, in the third
subject deals with the social commitments acquire by the people who join ECCI University.

Several students do not accomplish a full adaptation to the university environment as they
are unfamiliar with the philosophy and the educational project of their institution. Going to
classes and taking part in discussions about the aspects of university life without the
knowledge of the principles and the action frameworks of the institution, will generate with
time coherence problems which will affect the students in the development of their life
projects.

According to MEN (2009):

the formation of wrong expectations about the conditions of the academic and
student life in the university environment, the lack of adaptation to the institutional
environment by the student, the lack of compatibility between his/her interests or
preferences and the demands of the academic life (ends up by affecting his/her
education project in short, mid and long terms) (p.21)

For this reason, ECCI University has organized a process of recognition of its educative
project so it could favor identification processes of the educative community. It is expected
that with this process, students’, parents and teachers can get involved actively in the
different instructive activities starting from the comprehension of the fundamental principles
that guide us.

1.1 Education with human quality

The motto of ECCI University is “humanism and technology” as this phrase sums up to a
large extent the desire to dignify the humane person through the scientific development in
order to prepare a world that allows them to develop their transforming potential in their own
and others benefit.

Since ECCI University was founded, in 1977, this phase started to be built with the first
teachers and students which with time has started to make more sense in the lives of the
members of the whole community. Several worked who saw the chance of studying as
something very far from them, found in that time the opportunity to learn and explore their
strengths, and in the same way, many teachers, researchers and administrative workers
found a way to keep learning based on the dreams and goals of their students.

Nowadays we can say that this phase has become something more real to all of us and to
the more than 18.000 students who have graduated as technicians, technologists,
professionals and specialists. We went from having a small building, to building modern
spaces of interaction, from having just four technical programs to organizing countless
programs and producing a series of science and technological researches that are published
and contribute to the ample social collection.

In our academic reflections we think that what is human is revealed in this manner: first you
must have a shared dream, then you must you must set a common purpose, and afterwards
lots of work and dedication are fundamental to accomplish them.

In all this time we have wanted to learn from work, the practice and the interaction in order
to conceive what we named as Education with human quality, which means, a series of
possibility conditions so that people reveal all their transforming potential and in this manner
look for a personal and collective growth.

In order to ease the comprehension of this concept, from now on we have wanted to offer a
pertinent referential framework.

1.1.1. Education of a human person.

It can be said that with the birth of a person there is always something new in the world, as
in spite of that in the process of their lives they receive an influence from their parents,
friends and congeners, citizens and in general from other human beings; it never does, or it
may do an exact copy of another person.

In any case, each person is unique, particular and different to every other, meaning, they
end up being a person and not just a copy.

And so with each of us coming to the world a permanent learning process starts that ties
itself with a series of inventory of what we inherit. Our ancestors teach us what humanity
has accomplished in terms of science, technology, arts among other important aspects, and
meanwhile each one of us makes a unique and particular appropriation of such a given
world.

According to professor German Vargas Guillen (2007):

In a certain way the metaphor in which “we enter a match that is already being
played” is acceptable. We must not just recognize others, we must also recognize
the field, the ball, and the rules of the game. All of this by the way is offered to us by
means of the language, work and interactions, this deployment that can be seen as
a succession and immediateness of moments, it can be put as constitution of the
subject. (p. 24)

And so, this interaction that each person makes with the inherited world leaves sediment, a
particular formation which details in a different way who we are, that at the same time
projects new ways to inhabit the world, this means organizing a new inheritance for the
newcomers. For this reason it can be said that people are formed and this formation depends
on how the interaction with humanities past is produced, on how it is their communication
with others and of what their projections are with the world they will inhabit.

Never the less, through time this concept of formation of the person had undergone big
transformations according to the socio-historic context in which they are framed. Now the
big majority is in agreement that a person is defined as an intelligent being that decides
in freedom (Moreno, 2014) but it has not always been like this.

For example, in the colony many people thought that skin color, social class and ethnicity
dictated who was a person and who was not, and a lot of time had to pass and a long battle
had to be fought so that the majorities were recognized as valid interlocutor. The same
happened with the universal right to vote, in our country women had to fight a long battle so
that they could be fully recognized as beings that decide in freedom, and it was just until
1957 that they could carry out their right to choose and be chosen.

Anyway, there are many cases in which it is seen that the person is a conquest of the human
history and that its possibility has depended on the newcomers, of the inheritance of those
who have been before, a profound and very human desire to be recognized as intelligent
beings who decide in freedom.

Let’s recap

So far the following has been said:

 The person is a being who decides in freedom

 Every human being starts something new in the world when they are born, as in their
relation with the world they always configure something unique and particular.
 The person is a conquest of humanity as not always all of them have been
understood as intelligent beings who decide in freedom and great efforts have had
to be made in order to accomplish this recognition.

With these elements it can be said that the idea of Education with human quality has a
relation with the recognition, the defense and the primacy of the person.

1.2. The person as a transcendent being.

Well, in this contemplation it appears in the horizon an inherent characteristic of the human
person related to going beyond the inherited world and the boundaries, such characteristic
has been called transcendence, because receiving the inheritance of those who were before

me and the influence of those who accompany me to prepare a new world, always implies
an intimate world of going beyond the boundaries.

But, in which aspects the ECCI university education project can you observe the
transcendence of the person?

Basically in the following transversal aspects:

1. The recognition of the other as a person

2. The recognition of my own experience in the world
3. The transcendence as an expression of the future
4. Man as a transcendent being to earthly life
5. The recognition of human inheritance.

With these elements, ECCI University educational project recognizes that all human beings
are endowed with intelligence, criteria and esthetical sensitivity in order to value and give a
meaning to the world around us. For this reason, ECCI University promotes spaces of
collective construction of human expression in the field of science, technology, spirituality
and arts.

In these spaces, the members of the educative community: students, teachers,

administrative personnel and parents, can stop to analyze the world surrounding them to
elaborate ameliorate their own experience with the world and recognize that who speak
either next to us, or from the distance through books, artistic expressions and technologic
devices.

for this effect, in the institution part of the human inheritance is organized and systematized
in the fields of science and technology so that you can submit to an inventory this legacy
and then and then you can go beyond those boundaries, meaning, that the given world is
transcended and their unique and particular configuration as a person is revealed so that
they can inscribe their mark in the future.

Let’s recap:

 Transcendence implies going beyond the boundaries.

 in order to transcend it is necessary to put the inheritance of those who were before
us to an inventory, meaning that you have to learn what others have conquered:
formulas, theories, mechanisms, among others, because, how can we go beyond if
we do not know how far others have come? How can we project beyond our earthly
life?
 To transcend we have to recognize ourselves and recognize others as people.

Now well, so far we have recognized that the transcendence of the person seems to be
related with overcoming determined boundaries in the lives of each person. Nevertheless,
facing this term some metaphysical comprehensions seem to appear in relation with going
beyond what happens in the afterlife.

For example from the Christian tradition we believe that:

Man through intelligence and will, recognizes himself as superior being created and
gifted with reason, which allows him to direct himself towards the truth and good.
Thinking in the transcendental sense, men respect others alike and all the beings in
nature; they make an effort to do his job well and to help others. Goes beyond pain
and death, gives meaning to life, family and children, thinks of the future of their
generation and works on the construction of a better world for everyone. They know
that the passing through earth is a step into transcendence and that all their actions
have repercussions, not just in the material but on the spiritual plane as well. They
know, as it has been said that he is not alone, that his life is not sterile and that he
has a lot to give and to receive. (Church’s social doctrine compendium. “Justice and
peace”. Chapter 3, 2014)

To approach this subject of the person, the founders of ECCI University consider it
necessary to overcome the reductionist sense of considering men as a compendium of

8

customs and ideologies and that consider men as a simple individual who makes part of the
social fabric.

Understanding the human person with a transcending sense makes us in first place to
recognize that man is not alone, that he is not a simple sand grain separated from his pairs,
but on the contrary as it is assured by the Church’s social doctrine compendium. “Justice
and Peace”, third chapter: human beings “are joined among them, in an organically
organized set, with varied relations according to the time and the social necessities”. And
so, their actions not only affect them in a direct way but also affect the social group and it
transcends not just the time they are living in, but also affects and it has repercussions in
the life beyond this material plane.

An individual society is a synonym of selfishness. For that in face of the transcendence of

the person, it is necessary to recognize the other from the point of view of love, not just form
the subsidiarity or solidarity, as these aspects stay just in the material plane, love transcends
and wants what is best for the other one, not just because we believe it will improve their
situation but because we truly believe we will arrive to the same end.

Church’s social doctrine compendium: man as a created being endowed of matter and
spirituality, in the full existence of his personal being which includes the community and
social being, is obligated to exercise a responsible freedom, in which the exercise of reason
and will, are going to make them transcend beyond the material plane, to channel their acting
and their feeling towards spirituality and in this way overcome the entirety of things and enter
the deeper structure of reality.

In that recognition of transcendence of the person, in a second place, we have to overcome

the concept of man as merely material. When man starts to let himself be enslaved by the
material world, he loses his freedom and enslaves himself in his passions. But, when man
thinks in his transcendent sense, starts as well to find meaning to his life and recognizes
himself as material and spiritual unit.

Is capable of reflecting about his destiny and discovers himself superior to the
material world, for his unique dignity as Gods speaker, under whose look decides
his life. He, in his interior acknowledges to have in himself the spirituality and the
immortality of his soul. (Church’s social doctrine compendium)

All of this in the plane of academic formation takes us to feeling as instruments of a
supernatural dimension, that’s why studying and working both with quality and excellence,
makes us take care of the little details, to do things with love for the other, to live with order
in every context and this will enrich our interior worlds and make us better people, to finally
accomplish kind environments and team work, in which the service to others is the
fundamental axis that perfect us and make us free.

A fair society can only be made in the respect for the transcendent dignity of the human
person. This represents the ultimate end of society… <<the social order and its progressive
development must at all moments subordinate to the good of the person, as the real order
must submit to the personal order, and not the other way around>>… it is necessary that all
social, scientific and cultural programs, are preceded by the conscience of every human
being. (Church’s social doctrine compendium)

In the education project of ECCI University it is thought and believed that such a
transcendence must be conquered through and ethical performance committed with the
primacy and recognition of the human person.

1.3. The individual’s ethical performance.

In the big majority of specialized texts, ethics seem to have a relation with the objectives,
from the Aristotelian perspective which relates ethics with the teleological perspective, and
morals with the attachment to basic norms for interaction with the others –Kantian
perspective with deontological character- but in an interesting and lucky turn for our
education purposes, the philosopher Paul Ricoeur makes an integration of the same
conceptual base to the simple exercise of narrating your own life, which results in something
very valuable for our practical exercises of comprehending the sense of the ethical
development of the individual.

About this aspect, in the text “oneself as another” Paul Ricoeur mentions the following:

The ethical objective will correspond precisely to what we will call, from now on,
“respect on oneself” (ibis, 2005. P 175) “the sustaining of oneself is, for the person,
the way of behaving in a way that the other person can count on them. As someone
counts on me, I am responsible of my actions in front of others. The term
responsibility gathers the two meanings: counting on… being responsible for…
10

gathers them, adding the response of the idea of a response to the question: where
are you? asked by the one needing me. This answer is here I am response that says
about the sustaining of oneself” (p. 168)

In this manner, that which Ricoeur calls esteem of oneself as ethical objective is the narrative
construction of a life and it relates basically with the way in which I understand myself and I
understand others when I narrate my experience in the world.

As not to enter a philosophical discussion, although this might be extensive and interesting,
it is better to analyze this aspect in an example:

At the end of World War II, some trials were held against some Nazi generals and leaders
for the Jew genocide. One of the most studied ones corresponds to one held in Jerusalem,
in 1961, to General Coronel Adolf Eichmann.

When during the trial he was asked what his responsibility in the genocide was, he
answered:

I did not follow Jews with eagerness or pleasure. It was the government who did it.
Persecution, on the other hand, could only be decided by a government, but in no
case I. I accuse the rulers of having abused of my obedience.

The first thing that can be noted in this response is that the victims could not count on him
to respect their lives. To the defendant, the responsibility of everything that happened was
of his government that abused of his obedience, but that it did count on with him in an
unconditional way to carry out orders to harm others in a state of total helplessness.

The problem present here , is that if you follow the convention that ethics, as a definition of
itself has much to do with others being able to count on me, in some way Eichmann’s
behavior was ethical as the government agents could count on it.

Nevertheless, the other side of the coin from this situation corresponds to the fact that
probably to Eichmann this behavior is ethical, but to the eyes of the rest of humanity, it is
simply considered immoral, as it infringes the fundamental principle, reached as a collective,
of the importance and value of the human person.

11

Now well, let’s look at the relevant aspects that have been mentioned so far:

1. The ethical postures reveals then in the way I understand myself and I understand
others when I narrate my experience (is what occurred in the Eichmann’s case)
2. Recognizing the primacy and value of the person causes that all human beings count
on me. This aspect has a special value in phenomenon such as the environmental
impact produced by my consumption. What I do and what I do not do in that sense
impacts in a way every human being; for that reason I must be held responsible.
3. With these elements, we can say that, he who recognizes himself and recognizes
others as people, must act in a way in which everyone can count on him.

1.3.1. ECCI university student’s identity.

Another phenomenon occurring when I narrate my life experience is that little by little I
generate identifiable traits that others will notice: if I am funny, skilled at math, an excellent
speaker, a good writer… these aspects make me stand out in a crowd.

In this process family, friends and the environment have a part, setting up a purpose. Parents
wish for their children carry their lives in a certain way, friends share certain experiences to
have similar traits and the environment does its own work through customs and culture. This
way everyone joins directly and indirectly in the setting of these identifiable traits.

In this sense, the university builds as well a purpose in that identification task through the
defense and promotion of values that are considered vital to recognize a human person.
The intention and the desire of ECCI University’s community is that all its members,
students, teachers, and administrative workers are identified by others who represent a
series of values that favor a peaceful and constructive living.

To a big extent, the educational purpose of ECCI University is that a graduate student, be
identified for being an honest, respectful, aware, prudent, fair and an empathic person, that
carries out and helps build the social rules and who has a proper and productive work
approach.

To broaden the understanding of this purpose, we offer a basic definition of these values up
next:

12

 Honesty: means matching what you think with what you do. Besides it is relates with
moral and social behaviors that are considered proper.
 Respect: means the compliance of the socially accepted behavior conventions,
respect implies keeping some boundaries in the relation with the environment and
with others.
 Thoughtfulness: means allowing to be affected by the condition of others so you can
act on their favor.
 Prudence: means thinking before acting to avoid committing mistakes that will harm
others.
 Justice: means giving each person what they deserve in the basis of the recognition
and primacy of others.
 Temperance: it implies moderation, sobriety and countenance. It consists on
moderating appetites and the excessive use of the senses, subjecting them to
reason. (RAE)
 Moral strength: it relates with maintaining primacy and the recognition of the person
when facing the hardest circumstances.
 Empathy: is the psychological and affectionate assessment of a subject in
accordance with the other person’s mood.

We know that it is not always easy to follow these and other values as our human condition
always faces us with difficult conditions. Nevertheless, could be our ethical and moral
horizon so they end up being the identity aspects of ECCI University.

So when someone asks: How can I recognize someone from ECCI University? They can
answer easily.

These are the honest, respectful, thoughtful, prudent, fair and empathic, that follows and
helps build the social rules and develop a pertinent and productive point of view at work.

In order to think about a particular case we can quote the following example:

13

Most of the people who live in the city must take public transportation daily, so they can get
to their work and studying places, but the concentration of masses is so big that the systems
have been crowded and, in several occasions, collapse for the huge demand.

In buses taxis and even in the roads where vehicles pass through, all sorts of behaviors can
be observed, which test the ethical and moral principles of ECCI University fellows. In these
spaces people fail to see the needs of others and it is not important if they are children,
seniors or handicap people, they use to go over their rights in favor of their own benefit.

In this sense, the members of ECCI University are called to represent a difference that
makes the primacy of the person in this and other spaces of socialization.

Subject 2: Getting to know the ECCI University.

In this second unit we are going to focus our interest in finding out the elements that give us
our i9dentity, among them we have the first and most important our institutional motto:
humanism and technology, which means the integration of human and technological
aspects.

We want that the academic community manages to make contributions atratri8ng from the
knowledge to local, national and international, contexts, encouraging the innovative spirit
through the production, appropriation and adaptation of its knowledge in conjunction with
information technologies (IT’s)

It is intended by this that our motto goes beyond personal frontiers to transform into an
attitude that contributes to the social life of those of us who make a part of the university and
at the same time impacts all other environments in which we are recognized.

Other elements that identify us as the ECCI University community are the institutional
symbols, the quality administration, the invention and creativity wee; the services and
opportunities that represent having a graduate students’ office that takes care of having a
direct contact con the students and enables important work programs and opportunities.

Another strength from ECC I University are the programs being lead from the welfare
department, with which it is intended that the academic community feels comfortable inside
the university, highlighting the importance of this office in the life quality of all the education
community.

The welfare department, as its name indicates it, is committed with the well fare of the whole
academic community. Day after day this department offers bigger services to students,
leaning on the graduate students’ office, whose objective is recognizing our students in
many national and international contexts, as suitable professionals, who with their expertise
accomplish that being ECCI University becomes a warranty to those of us who study here.

At ECCI University we work to consolidate three basic pillars of formation in superior

education and these have to do with:

 Teaching

15

 Research
 Social project

For our professional development and recognition as an essential part of the University we
count on key elements that help us know the principals in which our educational project is
based on. In this measure, the behavior’s manual is the place where the student, and any
other member of the university community ECCI can know what are their rights and duties
inside the institution and take them as an autonomous learning that regulates its transit
though the university life.

The behavior’s manual is a navigational map, which allows the students to be informed about
the judgement that at a certain point he might need or indicate what the benefits that he can
obtain in a certain situation are.

It is important to remark all the related aspects with our education community are related
with the quality politics, which has as a finality carry out both the need and expectations of
students, promoting the self-evaluation in all the departments and that it is consolidated as
an indication that allows us to acquire the maturity of the administrative and education
processes. This self-evaluation can become a support to the programs offered by our
institution.

Being ECCI University, is an important event developed in the university and that has a great
meaning for students, teachers and administrative workers, is the ingenuity and creativity
week; in this week we can observe the advancements of our students and teachers.

During the week there are samples of the researches applied that are developed during the
semester. To this event all the education community assists besides many institutions and
enterprises that, at a certain point van become strategic partners for the projects developed
by the students, which generates great interest in the participants.

Additionally, being ECCI University is consolidates in the publication from the university to
the national and international academic community through the magazine TECCIENCIA,
that is constituted in an academic space in which the collaborative knowledge is strengthen,
the development of the research that it done from our institution and the contributions to
science and technology, that causes we have greater recognition in academic environments.

Our publications are projected as meaningful contributions for the knowledge generation
creating learning networks, which show the research work which from the university is done
in order to impact the knowledge society, as it the duty of every higher education institution.

The El Dorado Theater ECCI University is another space with which our institution counts
with for the development of science, art and culture; it is located in Bogota’s downtown, near
institutions of great recognition such as the COLOMBO-FRENCH alliance, the Colombo-
American institution and ICETEX. It counts with a big parking lot for visitors. Its modern
installations make ECCI Theater an exceptional scenery that consolidates itself as a
vanguard choice for the development of entrepreneurial, cultural and artistic activities. This
scenery is a pride symbol for those who are part of ECCI University.

For these and all other things: I am ECCI university.

2.1. Human development.

Human development has to do with an education that nurtures the development of the
person within the society, looking for equity, freedom and progress and the development of
all citizens in an equality of conditions.

This is the great teaching that contains our motto and the one each member of the
community have to make a reality and of course our students and graduates who have the
fortune of being ECCI University

2.2. Community handbook.

Make part of an institution requires the respect towards the norm, that facilitate and promote
harmony. It is like that the community handbook calls us all to know the norm and
commitments we have to have into account to reach a pleasant cohabitation within the
institution. That means being ECCI University.

2.3. Institutional symbols.

Besides knowing the institutional ruled and commitments, being ECCI University makes us
also to know also the institutional symbols that will mark our professional life and help
recognize ourselves as an ECCI graduate in all the spaces in which we are.

To accomplish the identity with our alma mater it is necessary to remember what our
institutional symbols mean.

2.3.1. Logo.

That entails the institutional philosophy, it is formed by a cross a book and the university
initials

 The cross makes reference to the believing in Jesus-Christ engine of existence of

life of a transcendental human being.
 The book encloses the knowledge that university seeks to develop in their students
and with which it tries to transform the world, reach progress and well-being for the
social group.
 The University initials that are inscribed and highlighted show the institutional
commitment to reach the formation of its students through the development of
science, framed in what is human.

2.3.2. Institutional coat of arms.

In this last unit it is intended that the student can formalize the acquired knowledge along

25

to offer quality formation programs, it is important that the student reflects about the image
he wants to transmit for the Alma Matter to the community in general.

All of us feel that the best family is each and every one of ours and it occurs the same with
the institution in which we are formed as professionals and committed people with the
development and social progress. None of us would want to hear someone say that the
school in which we studied the high school is one of the lowest academic levels and neither
that the neighborhood in which we live is the least solidary ones. Comments like these
damage the image of our vital spaces, for that, it happens the same with our beloved Alma
Matter.

It must not be allowed that anyone damages the institutional image and even less damage
it ourselves with comments or actions against the institution that would be like talking bad
about our family. The commitment then of each and every one of the students, teachers,
administrative workers and academic community, is to put the name of our university high
in the standards.

We know that ECCI University has been positioning itself in the academic and
entrepreneurial ambits. We know that we are recognized by the quality work, because we
are capable of giving a sense to the competences that we have been formed with as
students and professionals, that many that our partners and graduates are in an important
position of the organizations, the university maintains self-learning and self-evaluation
channels every day more organized and committed with quality; but at the same time we
know that if all those accomplishments and effort are allowed to get lost is a personal
nonsense, fall to the emptiness and get lost.

It is important to internalize in ourselves the accomplishments and efforts of our Alma matter,
so that as students, professionals and graduates, we end up committed with ECCI University
as much with the reason as with the heart; behaving according with the philosophy and
principles with which we have been educated and giving the best image of our institution in
all the spaces in which we develop.

To finally be able to say that: IT IS WORTH BEING ECCI UNIVERSITY

3.1. CCI University’s basic activities.

The basic activities form the university are: integral formation, social responsibility,
professional formation and research.

They are defined clearly in the instructional Education project (PEI for its acronym in
Spanish) from the following way:

a) <<the integral formation: it is defined as a conscious or intentional process of the human

species that procures the development of it education dimensions easing up the necessary
elements for its perfecting in such a way that it accomplishes: knowing how to be, knowing
how to know, knowing how to do and knowing how to live together.

Education in an individual and collective task, for that, it demands the individual and
institutional efforts to reach the purpose of forming a human being that managers to improve
its level of life and that is it's social surrounding to which they belong to.

The integral character of the formation process that ECCI University assumes besides the
specific formation comprehended within the studies program selected by the student, our
institution retakes the task started in other educational levels, contributing not just that starts
reaching every day more attitude to incorporate to the historical moment that corresponded
to this person, but also to comprehend it and transform it. >>

In that sense, the commitment of both the students and the graduates is ECCI University
implies responsibility with the specific program's learning that is studying; but at the same
time, understanding that such a learning has to have a positive impact in society and, for
that makes it responsible and commits it with society in which he develops his professional
work, but at the same time forces it to carry the name of the institution that educated him as
a professional high up, not just form the academic; but framed in the human development.

b. Social Responsibility: ECCI University as an oriented organization to the services of giving

education in a higher level, assumes its social responsibility form the relation that
established with every one of its interest groups. These groups understood as: students,

teachers, administrative personnel and directives, graduates, providers and the society as
a whole and its performance as a community, managing and directing the education,
cognitive, working and environmental impact. The university from a constant feedback of
society takes part in the improvement and promotion of the sustainable human development
(PEI for its acronym in Spanish).

It is necessary to remember that the human development, commits all the students and
graduates from the university with the consecution of the improvement of the life quality of
the society and the procuring of higher standards of social welfare for all.

c. Professional Formation: <<it is understood as the formation and capacitation of

technicians and professionals to be able to apply their field and being able to improve the
person and society’s life quality>> (PEI for its acronym in Spanish). As it has been said in
the previous points it is a commitment of ECCI University‘s students and on the graduates,
as for their academic level they become leaders that guides the social development.

In the country the access to higher education is limited, for that, those who enter this
education have to be an example of human quality. Society sees a professional as a guide
who leads processes of improvement, for which it is an obligation that students and
graduates from the university attend such social responsibilities as professionals’ committed
with just and balanced social developments.

d. Research: <<science and technology do not appear without research and for that the
institution tends to the research of new truths, the original production, experimentation,
creative thinking, with appropriate answers to our culture and the country with a social
responsibility sense>> (PEI foo its acronym in Spanish) ECCI University’s student and
graduate, must be recognized in the academic environments as a competent professional,
critical, studious and respectful of the scientific and technological developments. He must
have an active participation in seminaries, workshops, and collaborative research groups
and he must procure being identified bot for his or her academic and ethical qualities within
the higher education institutions and the organizational environment. This is a commitment
that consolidates ECCI University’s student and graduate as the professional prototype that
society needs.

3.2. Actions against anomie.

Anomie: lack of behavior norms in a community or in the lack of following of existing norms.

Anomie is rooted in society more every day, to understand better this phenomenon let’s look
at the following meaning: “the concept anomie was introduced for the first time in a
systematic way in the sociological tradition by Emile Durkheim, referring with this to a social
situation in which there is not a norm and shared order by the majority of the members of a
society, in a way that the particular interest do not manage to get involve into a general
interest”. According to Girola (2005), anomie is, not just the lack of norms and rules, -as in
her work the division of social work (1893-1982)-. But it refers to the lack of the current
norms in people’s daily life giving it a subjective meaning.

In Durkemian terms, we would be in front of an abrupt process of change that deteriorates

the shared codes, losing the rooting to the social fabric that allows to create bonds and ties
of sociability. In this context, the individualization process acquires the characteristics of a
negative individualism or asocial (Pnud, 2002).

The untying of traditional institution a and the adjusting of the ways of lives if accompanied
of an organization of the social systems that does not foresees the resources for the self-
determination. This causes that the social life is experimented as a strain and a threat, as a
naturalization of a social world, centering their sociability in micro spaces, as family and
closest friends. (Soledad, 2015).

Is about a historical and culturally specific phenomenon, meaning, their expressions

are particular to contexts and reflect tensions between individuals and society,
marked by the simultaneity of dependency and autonomy, desires and limitations,
freedom and security. (Parales, 2008, p 660).

That is why ECCI University, to counteract the effects of anomie in the education community
has developed important actions guided to reach the social responsibility, the professional
formation and the research, as main points to work in favor of the education community and
to help it face with clear and proper criteria the disintegrating effects of anomie.

3.3. Proper use of public spaces.

According to a document of the Ministerio de Vivienda, public space is defined as:

Group of public properties and the architectonic and natural elements of the private
properties, destined by its nature, for its use or affectation to the satisfaction of urban
collective needs that transcend for that, the limits of the individual interests of the
inhabitants (Ministerio de Vivienda, 2005).

In this way it is understood that the public space includes streets, sidewalks, squares and in
general, all the public properties of a state, destined to the use of the social collectives.

30
Autor: Miller Pérez, Romero R., Amparo y Romero R., Gloria I. – versión 2.0
Translator: Andrés Guillermo Bejarano Cortes ECCI University Language Center 2015

These spaces are good for the social collectives to develop their daily life and woven the
social fabric, giving a space to the development of culture and enabling in this way the social
life. Nevertheless, the respect for public space implies the order and the caring for the
common goods. For that invading it or damaging it is a synonym of aggression against the
social collective.

The invitation to ECCI University students and in general to the whole education community
is working for the protection of the public space, showing that we have an academic
formation that places us in positions of leaders and invite us to continue, for that the caring
of green zones, the use of crosswalk, respecting the traffic lights –as the majority of the
times accidents are generated by the imprudence of pedestrians-, understanding that we
must use the sidewalks to leave the lanes free for vehicles, parking in the published places,
not throwing trash in the street, as for that there are established bins that allow us to recycle
the produced residues.

3.4. Security politics.

To facilitate a good living together and a safe environment to the education community of
ECCI University and for the inhabitants of the community in general the University <<through
concrete actions and others directed to promote education, respect and neighborly
organization, seeks to promote the team work as a social excursive which is a duty and a
responsibility of everyone.

Equally it is worked with the major’s office of Teusaquillo locality and the local board of
education institutions>> so that all the inhabitants of the sector included those who are a
part of the university, can live in a space of shared calmness, cooperation and responsibility.
Transforming the environment of ECCI University a safe place, in which everyone is
responsible for everyone.

31
Autor: Miller Pérez, Romero R., Amparo y Romero R., Gloria I. – versión 2.0
Translator: Andrés Guillermo Bejarano Cortes ECCI University Language Center 2015
Copyright 2014: Universidad ECCI-
For that, the call we make in this part of the course ECCI University Lectureship is to commit
in an active way with the University programs that look to promote a <<good neighbor culture
based on the coexistence norms and promoting actions that contribute to position ECCI
University as a recognized space accepted and loved by the surrounding community.
Tolerance, respect, cooperation, tea work and participation are fundamental to warranty the
safety and the tranquility that is the main object of the job to be done as an alternative to
minimize the effect of the educative activity we make>>.

Is like that as several of the students, teachers, administrative workers and ECCI community’
commitments have as an object to contribute with its action in reaching the institutional goals
and showing us how a community that looks after the security of the sector, that is
characterized by respect and security, that gives an example of citizen behavior according
to their education level and that for that, is considered a positive agent for society through
the following behaviors:

 Not generating unnecessary noises that bother the neighbors.

 Use the formal parking spots.
 Potting the trash in the trash cans.
 Not consuming alcohol in public spaces.

This is the commitment with security politics if the university as if we try to accomplish the
previous recommendations, the environment will be of a greater social and human quality.

3.5. Humane treatment culture.

It is framed in the principle of respect that is contemplated in the ECCI University quality
politics that is “oriented to create spaces so that all the members of the community generate
an organizational climate that creates a good service culture”.

Currently in the world there is nothing that is valued with a greater esteem that a quality
service, for that the good service culture frames the recognition of the other as a person,
giving to understand in the way, that we are all the same and owners of the same qualities.
When we treat others in a good way, we are treating ourselves well, we are taking care and
protecting ourselves and above all, we are dignifying the person.
32

This is an important commitment of the ECCI University’s student and graduate, taking into
account the good service and good treatment cultures, not just in the organizational and
working environments but also in all the spaces in which they are found.

This seal will makes us more recognizable every day and it will become a distinctive of
institutional and personal quality. Let’s work to get it, as not just our Alma Matter will be
benefited, but his students, graduates, teachers, administrative workers and the education
community in general will fell proud to be a part of an institution with these characteristics.

Let’s remember that institutions are made by people that are a part of them, form there the
need that all and every one of us commit to reach the quality levels that we want for our
beloved Alma Mater.

Summary of the unit

ECCI University bases its formation project in the recognition, defense and importance of
the person, understood as the configuration socio-historic of an intelligent being that decides
in freedom. In this way, as an essential characteristic, emphasizes the capacity that the
person has to go beyond their limits, and configures an ethical figure that is revealed in the
form as it is understood and understands others.

The institution symbols are related to the peace, and love to knowledge and social
development and transcend in the practice in aspects such as the quality management, the
development of inventiveness and creativity, the promotion of welfare activities, the
construction of knowledge and the generation of spaces to the expression of art and culture.

All of these aspects are reflected in the commitments that the community ECCI University
acquires with the social group, in dimensions of the citizen culture as the proper use of public
spaces, the respect for the citizens’ rights and the promotion and establishment of social
rules of cohabitation.
