Laboratory 2
Sieve Analysis

Introduction

A sieve analysis is a practice or procedures are used to assess the particle size distribution of a
granular material. The size distribution is often of critical importance to the way the material performs in
use. A sieve analysis can be performed on any type of non-organic or organic granular materials
including sands, crushed rock, clays, granite, coal, soils, a wide range of manufactured powders, grain
and seeds, down to a minimum size depending on the exact method.

Objectives

Generally, this laboratory attempts to:

 To determine the particle size of soil.

 To determine amount of soil distributed in each sieve.
 To determine the amount and types of soil present in the sample.
 To obtain data from grain size distribution curve

Specifically, this laboratory attempts to:

 To categorized and compute the percentage of soil aggregated on each sieves according to sizes.
 To categorized the soil by percentage according to types.

Materials

The materials being used in the study includes: Air-dried soil, weighing scale, Sieves, Cellophane,
Mortar and pestle, electronic balance.

Procedure

1.) Weigh the dried sample using weighing scale

2.) Finely crush the dried sample in mortar using pestle or hammer until all particles are separated

3.) Clean all the sieves and install it starting from small opening sieves at the bottom together with the
receiving pan to larger opening sieves at the top.

4.) Shake the stack of sieves manually for 15 minutes.

5.) On completion of sieving the sample, remove the sieve stack and record the weight of material
retained on each sieves and receiving pan.

6.) Compute using the data gather to complete the given table and plot the results on a graph

7.) Use the recorded data to calculate the uniformity coefficient and coefficient of curvature

8.) Formulate a conclusion from the computed results

Conclusion

In this laboratory we conclude that we can determine the type of soil at that particular place with
use the Sieve Analysis Test and depend to the sample of soil trough the sieve. Depend to size of sieve
(mm) and percentage passing. Besides that, we determine the Uniformity Coefficient (Cu) = 4.56 and
Coefficient of Curvature (Cc) = 0.93.
