IN Dr. MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG HOSPITAL FROM JANUARY 2015 –

DECEMBER 2017 PERIOD
Prayitno Cesario Budi* Dastamuar Shalita**

ABSTRACT
Background : Esophageal atresia refers to a congenitally interrupted esophagus. The incidence is
1:3500 live born infants. There are several classification risk factors to predicting outcome in
esophageal atresia patient. However, Waterston and Spitz classification are the most common use
to predicting successfully treatment in esophageal atresia patient.
Method : These research is a descriptive study with retrospective design study conducted on
January 2015 – December 2017. Sample where the medical record of patients with esophageal
atresia in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital.
Result : From 27 cases, there were 15 patients died (55.5%). 9 of 17 (47%) low birth weight and
2 of 2 (100%) very low birth weight patients was died. Based on Gross classification 22 patients
(81.5%) are type C and 5 patients (18.5%) are type A. Associated anomalies were seen in 14 (52%)
patients, with cardiac anomalies (32%) being the most prevalent. 80% cases with Gross
classification type A had the most common associated anomalies. Cardiac anomaly (71%), sepsis
(43%), and pneumonia (29%) are the most frequent cause of death. Based on Waterston
classification, survival rate in group A, B, and C are 83%, 36%, and 29%. Based on Spitz
classification, survival rate in group I, II, and III are 58%, 14%, and 0%.
Summary : Mostly factors that affected the prognostic are low birth weight, cardiac anomaly,
sepsis, and pneumonia. However, other factors will influence the prognostic.

Key word : esophageal atresia, prognostic factors, classification, survival rate
