Curvilinear
Motion
Experiment
1. Scope
1.1 Goal
Conduct
an
experiment
by
setting
an
object
in
curvilinear
motion
by
use
of
a
roller
coaster
track.
Analyze,
interpret
resulting
data
and
compute
single
body
position,
velocity,
acceleration,
kinetic
energy,
potential
energy,
total
energy
and
plot
all
quantities
vs.
time.

capture

object

Tighten
back
support

inch
wrench
tool.

Connect
camera
sliding
system
(Slider:

to
left
face
of
vertical
post.
Position
such
that
distance
between
bottom
face
of
slider
system
and
table
surface
is
six
inches.
Use
scale
on
post
to
measure
height.

wrench
tool.

one
side
of
track
onto
slider
system
and
onto
horizontal
post.

track

possible:

2) Slope
configuration
(as
shown
below)
Step

Connect
camera
USB
to
PC.
Log
into
computer
system
and
open
Kinovea
software.

height
of
slider
system
2. Press
“REC”
in
Kinovea
user
interface
to
begin
recording
3. Release
car
from
initial
height
of
track
adjacent
to
vertical
post
4. Press
“STOP”
in
Kinovea
user
interface
to
stop
data
collection
once
car
has
come
to
a
halt
5. Repeat
experiment
twice,
changing
track
configuration
or
mass
used
for
each
experimental
run
