Problem Set - 4

DC Motors

1. A 10 kW, 250 V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω and a field resistance
of 200 Ω. At no load and rated voltage, the speed is 1200 rpm and the armature current
is 3 A. At full load and rated voltage, the line current is 47 A and because of armature
reaction, the flux is 4 % less than its no-load value.

(a) What is the full load speed? ( Ans: 1142 rpm)

(b) What is the developed torque at full load? ( Ans: 86.8 N.m)

2. When operated from a 230 V dc supply, a dc series motor operates at 975 rpm with a line
current of 90 A. Its armature resistance is 0.11 Ω and its series field resistance is 0.08 Ω.
Due to saturation effects, the flux produced by an armature current of 30 A is 48 % of
that at an armature current of 90 A. Find the motor speed when the armature voltage is
230 V and the armature current is 30 A? ( Ans: 2140 rpm)

3. A 50 kW, 230 V dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.1 Ω and a field resistance
of 200 Ω. It runs on no-load at a speed of 1400 rpm, drawing a current of 10 A from
the mains. When delivering a certain load, the motor draws a current of 200 A from the
mains. Find the speed at which it will run at this load and the torque developed. Assume
that the armature reaction causes a reduction in the flux/pole of 4 % of its no-load value.
( Ans: 1337 rpm, 298.4 N. m)

4. A dc motor drives a 100 kW generator having an efficiency of 87 %.

(a) What should be the kW rating of the motor? ( Ans: 115 kW)
(b) If the overall efficiency of the motor generator set is 74 %, what is the efficiency of
the motor? ( Ans: 85 %)
(c) Also calculate losses in each machine. ( Ans: Motor:20.3 kW, Generator:15 kW)

5. A cumulative compound motor is operated as a shunt motor with its series field discon-
nected, has an armature current of 100 A and at a shunt field flux of 0.09 Wb develops a
torque of 75 N.m. When the series field is connected at the same armature current, the
motor develops a torque of 90 N.m. Calculate the increase in flux produced by the series
field. ( Ans: 18 mWb)

6. A dc shunt motor drives an elevator load which requires a constant torque of 300 N.m.
The motor is connected to a 600 V dc supply and the motor rotates at 1500 rpm. The
armature resistance is 0.5 Ω.

(a) Determine the armature current. ( Ans: 84.49 A )

(b) If the shunt field flux is reduced by 10 %, determine the armature current and the
speed of the motor. ( Ans: 93.9791 A, 1653 rpm)

7. A separately excited dc motor has the following nameplate data: 100 hp, 440 V, 2000
rpm.

(a) Determine the rated torque. ( Ans: 356.2 N. m)

(b) Determine the current at rated output if the efficiency of the motor is 90 % at rated
output. ( Ans: 188.4 A)
