Problem 1
Consider a system which has the following input, u(t)) - output, y(t) relation:

(
2u(t) if u(t) ≤ α
y(t) = (1)
4u(t) if u(t) > α,

where α is a constant.

Is the system linear? Is it time-invariant? Is it causal? Justify your answer.

Problem 2
Consider the pole-zero plot in Fig. 1. Find the transfer function, ĝ(s) of the system. Find the impulse
response of the system, g(t).

Figure 1: The pole-zero plot of 3 poles and 2 zeros.

Problem 3
Consider a system which has outputs, y1 (t), y2 (t) and y3 (t) to inputs u1 (t), u2 (t) and u3 (t) for t ≥ 0 ,
respectively.
(a) If u3 = 0.5(u1 − u2 ), then y3 = 2(y1 − y2 ). Is this an input-linear system?
(b) If u3 = 0.4u1 + 0.6u2 , then y3 = 0.4y1 + 0.6y2 . Is this an input-linear system?
(c) If in part (b), x1 (0) = 1, x2 (0) = 5 yields x3 (0) = 3.3, is the system in part (b) linear?

Problem 4
For a linear time-invariant (LTI) system with impulse response, g(t) = e−2t , t ≥ 0, find the output of
the system, y(t) as a response to the input, u(t) = e−t , t ≥ 0.

Problem 5
As Prof. Özgüler has mentioned during the lecture today, prove the following fact.
Fact. The transfer function ĝ(s) is proper iff the underlying LTI system is causal.
