In this unit, the students we will be focusing on non-fiction/informational text.
The students will be working toward the following goals.
Standard RI2
I can determine the main idea of text.
I can explain how the main idea is supported by key ideas in the text.
I can summarize a text.
I can use text structure to identify supporting details.

Standard RI9
I can integrate information from two texts on the same topic.
I can support the author’s purpose with reason and evidence.
During the unit, students will be reading/viewing a variety of non-fiction texts,
including: books, articles, and videos. Students will also be completing two
research projects on extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes,
volcanoes, floods, and droughts.
At home:
Encourage your child to read non-fiction books and articles.
Ask them what the main idea is and which details support that main idea.
Ask them to look at more than one book or article about a topic, and come
up with ideas that both texts support.

Happy Reading!
