Sabbath School Lesson

QUARTERLY

The Reform Movement

and the
Finishing of the Work

SENIOR DIVISION, FOURTH QUARTER, 1975

From the Sabbath School Department -
Greetings to all fellow-students:
We would again draw attention to the format of the
lessons and remind all students that the Sabbath School
lessons should be studied daily. For this reason, the
lesson is divided into five sections, usually of two
questions. There is a box for you to check them off as you
complete each section. These cover from Sunday to
Thursday. It is suggested that on Friday you make a
review privately of the lesson as a complete unit. The
questions provided under the section for that day are
merely to help the individual student in his review.
These questions have nothing to do with the regular
review of the lesson in the Sabbath School the following
week, except as some of these questions may be relevant
to the ideas brought out by the one conducting the
review.
The "PERSONAL" questions are not necessarily ones
that should be answered in public, although some
general discussion may be beneficial. It should always be
kept in mind by teachers and students alike, that unless
the lessons are made to relate to the personal life of each
individual in such a way as to effect such changes as
may be necessary or beneficial, they are of little value.
Head knowledge is not enough. The promises of God are
only for the overcomers.

Your brethren in Christ,

FOREWORD
The paramount concern of all true followers of Christ should be to see the
work of salvation finished and to hasten the return of our Lord. The thought of
being with Him for eternity in the New Jerusalem and the earth made new
should inspire all to action. -

The series of studies prepared for this quarter and the one following are
centered around the work of The Reform Movement and the Finishing of the
Work. These issues should receive careful attention so that we may be
prepared for the events as they come.

Of special interest should be the part that God has for each one of us to
play in the divine program. It is true no one can know perfectly all the events
and experiences to come in the future. The Lord has-through His ser-
vants-revealed certain prominent features, and these give us the general
direction. However, it is for each one, individually, to get his marching orders
direct from the Lord each day. If the will is dedicated to do His will, He will
show us our duty by His word, through the Spirit of Prophecy and by the
leading of His providence.

Every student should seek all the information available in the word of
God and the prophetic writings. Then we should day by day discern the
leading, and witness of His Spirit. "Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for
the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest
for your souls" (Jeremiah 6:16).

It is the wish and prayer of the publishers that every student will seek a
fuller knowledge of and preparation for these events which are even at the
door.

"Every day some portion of time should be appropriated to

the study of the lessons, not merely in learning to
mechanically repeat the words, while the mind does not com-
prehend the meaning; but to go to the very foundation, and
become familiar with what is brought out in the lesson,"

THE REFORM MOVEMENT IN PROPHECY

KEY TEXT: "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do
well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark
p-lace, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your
hearts." 2 Peter 1:19.

A Repository for the Truth D Sunday

September 28
1. By means of what comparison does the apostle Paul explain the
nature of the church? 1 Timothy 3: 15.

NOTE: "Consider, my brethren and sisters, that the Lord has a people, a
chosen people, His church, to be His own, His own fortress, which He holds in
a sin-stricken, revolted world." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 16.

2. What must be found in the true church of God as a basis for its ex-
istence? 1 Timothy 2:4; John 17:17.

NOTE: "During ages of spiritual darkness the church of God has been as a
city set on a hill. From age to age, through successive generations, the pure
doctrines of heaven have been unfolding within its borders." - The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 12.

True Church to Have Light D Monday

September 29
3. What makes it very clear that God did not choose His people on the
basis of wealth, social position, or other intrinsic merit?
Deuteronomy 7:6-8.

NOTE: "Enfeebled and defective as it may appear, the church is the one ob-
ject upon which God bestows in a special sense His supreme regard. It is the
theater of His grace, in which He delights to reveal His power to transform
hearts." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 12.

4. What is evidence that there is no light in false churches, but there is in

the true church? Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 5: 14, 16.

NOTE: "The prophet says, 'To the law and to the testimony: if they speak
not according to this word. it is because there is no light in them.'

-5-
"From this statement it is evident that it becomes us to be diligent Bible
students, tha,t we may know what is according to the law and the testimony.
We are safe in no other course of action...." -The SDA Bible Commentary,
Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, pp. 951, 952.

"Bent to Backsliding" D Tuesday

September 30
5. What is oile important purpose of the gift of prophecy? Proverbs
29:18; Jeremiah 3:12, 14.

NOTE: "God has ever been faithful to punish crime. He sent His prophets to
warn the guilty, denounce their sins, and pronounce judgment upon them."
-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 12.
"The same danger exists today among the people who profess to be the
depositaries of God's law. They are too apt to flatter themselves that the
regard in which they hold the commandments will preserve them from the
power of divine justice. They refuse to be reproved for evil, and charge God's
servants with being too zealous in putting sin out of the camp. A sin-hating
God calls upon those who profess to keep His law to depart from all ini-
quity...." -Ibid., vol. 4, p. 166.

6. What evidence shows that prophets were sent to bring His people
back to the truth, and save them from the inevitable results of
backsliding and apostasy? Jeremiah 7:25; Hosea 11:7,8.

NOTE: "One who sees beneath the surface, who reads the hearts of all men,
says of those who have had great light: 'They are not afflicted and astonished
because of their moral and spiritual condition.''' -Testimonies, vol. 8,
p.249.

The Invitations in the Last Period D Wednesday

October 1
7. What counsel does Jesus give to the angel (the leaders) of His
professed church in the Laodicean period? Revelation 3: 18.

NOTE: " ... The gold is faith and love, the white raiment is the
righteousness of Christ, the eyesalve is that spiritual discernment which will
enable you to see the wiles of Satan and shun them, to detect sin and abhor it,
to see truth and obey it." -Testimonies, vol. 5; p. 233.

8. When this counsel is rejected by the angel (the leaders), to whom is

the invitation then extended? Revelation 3:20.

-6-
A Message Designed to Bring Great Power o Thursday

9. How many angels are associated in proclaiming the everlasting
gospel in the last period of earth's history? Revelation 14:6-13; 18:1.

NOTE: "We are to throw aside our narrow, selfish plans, remembering that
we have a work of the largest magnitude and highest importance. In doing this
work we are sounding the first, second, and third angel's messages, and are
thus being prepared for the coming of that other angel from heaven who is to
lighten the earth with his glory." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 406.

10. What repetition shows that the work of the fourth angel is identified
with the threefold message from 1844? Revelation 14:8; 18:2, 3.

NOTE: "The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel
has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-
pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose
glory shall fill the whole earth." -Review and Herald, Nov. 22, 1892.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, October 11,1975

EMERGENCE OF TWO DISTINCT

CLASSES OF ADVENTISTS
KEY TEXT: "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate,
saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will
receive you." 2 Corinthians 6:17.

A Shaking in the Church o Sunday

October 5
1. What must the Lord do with His people before the end, and with what
result? Amos 9:9.

NOTE: "I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen, and was shown that
it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the
True Witness to the Laodiceans. This will have its effect upon the heart of the
receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the straight
truth. Some will not bear this straight testimony. They will rise up against it,
and this will cause a shaking among God's people." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p.
181.

2. What Scriptural evidence shows that the counsel of the Laodicean

message was not generally accepted by all the people? Revelation
3:16.

NOTE: "The testimony of the True Witness has not been half heeded. The
solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs has been lightly
esteemed, if not entirely disregarded." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 181.

Two Distinct Classes of Adventists o Monday

October 6
3. Mter the church is divided into two classes by the shaking, what is
the attitude adopted by the class in the majority? What is the result?
Matthew 24:48-50.

NOTE: "The evil servant says in his heart, 'My lord delayeth his coming.' He
does not say that Christ will not come. He does not scoff at the idea of His sec-
ond coming. But in his heart and by his actions and words he declares that
the Lord's coming is delayed. He banishes from the minds of others the con-
viction that the Lord is coming quickly. His influence leads men to presump-
tuous, careless delay. They are confirmed in their worldliness and stupor.
Earthly passions, corrupt thoughts, take possession of the mind. The evil ser-

-8-
vant eats and drinks with the drunken, unites with the world in pleasure seek-
ing. He smites his fellow servants, accusing and condemning those who are
faithful to their Master. He mingles with the world.... " -The Desire of
Ages, p. 635.
"As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the
third angel's message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the
truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition. By uniting
with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in
nearly the same light...." -The Great Controversy, p. 608.

4. What contrasting position is taken by the smaller class, and what ex-
perience do they make? Hosea 6:3.

NOTE: " ... But the angels left those who made no effort to help themselves,
and I lost sight of them. As the praying ones continued their earnest cries, a
ray of light from Jesus would at times come to them, to encourage their hearts,
and light up their countenances.

" ... This [the straight testimony] will have its effect upon the heart of
the receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the
straight truth ....
" ... This testimony must work deep repentance, and all that truly
receive it will obey it and be purified." - Testimonies, vo!. 1, p. 181.

Acceptance for Those Who Follow Jesus o Tuesday

October 7
5. What assurance do the faithful in the smaller class have that God
accepts them as His people? Romans 9:25-27.

NOTE: "Those who come up to every point, and stand every test, and over-
come, be the price what it may, have heeded the counsel of the True Witness,
and they will receive the latter rain, and thus be fitted for translation."
- Testimonies, vo!. 1, p. 187.

6. What characteristics exemplifying that Christ is their righteousness

will continue to be seen in the class of the faithful? Titus 2:12-14.

NOTE: "It is as certain that we have the truth as that God lives; and Satan,
with all his arts and hellish power, cannot change the truth of God into a lie.
While the great adversary will try his utmost to make of none effect the word
of God, truth must go forth as a lamp that burneth." -Testimonies, vo!. 4,
p. fi95.

-9-
Warning Against a Fatal Temptation o Wednesday
October 8
7. What condition that enables God to receive the faithful as His own
should have been carefully observed from the beginning of the three
angels' messages? 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.

NOTE: " ... There are conditions to meet if we would be blessed and
honored by God. We are to separate from the world, and refuse to touch those
things that will separate our affections from God. God has the first and highest
claims upon His people. Set your affections upon Him and upon heavenly
things. Your tendrils must be severed from everything earthly.
" ... God and Christ and the heavenly host would have man know that if
he unites with the corrupt, he will become corrupt. Ample provision has been
made that we may be raised from the lowlands of earth, and have our affec-
tions fastened upon God and upon heavenly things (RH Jan. 2,1900)." -SDA
Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1102.

8. What direct warning did Christ give that should preclude the tempta-
tion to compromise with the world, and how far should it apply?
Matthew 6:24.

NOTE: "Those who begin their Christian life by being half and half, will at
las1 be found enlisted on the enemy's side, whatever may have been their first
intentions. And to be an apostate, a traitor to the cause of God, is more serious
than death; for it means the loss of eternal life.
"Double-minded men and women are Satan's best allies. Whatever
favorable opinion they may have of themselves, they are dissemblers. All who
are loyal to God and the truth must stand firmly for the right because it is
right. To yoke up with those who are unconsecrated, and yet be loyal to the
truth, is simply impossible. We cannot unite with those who are serving
themselves, who are working on worldly plans, and not lose our connection
with the heavenly Counselor. We may recover ourselves from the snare of the
enemy, but we are bruised and wounded, and our experience is dwarfed (RH
April 19, 1898)." -SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol.
5, p. 1086.
Enemies of God 0 Thursday
October 9
9. How only can the Lord regard those who go their own way, either as
individuals or as a church? Philippians 3:18.

NOTE: "Whenever men choose their own way, they place themselves in con-
troversy with God. They will have no place in the kingdom of heaven, for they
are at war with the very principles of heaven. In disregarding the will of God,
they are placing themselves on the side of Satan, the enemy of God and
man.... " -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 52.

-10-
10. What forcible language and similes are used by the apostle James to
emphasize the danger of uniting with the world and God's attitude to
this sin? James 4:4.

NOTE: "Many urge that by uniting with worldlings and conforming to their
customs, they might exert a stronger influence over the ungodly. But all who
pursue this course thereby separate from the Source of their strength. Becom-
ing the friends of the world, they are the enemies of God." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 607.

Prophecy?

c. What is evidence that the smaller group inherits the promises

applicable to them all and still claimed by the majority?

d. What warning needs careful heed by the smaller class?

e. What danger always remains, and what is the outcome for those who
compromise?

Lesson 3 Sabbath, October 18, 1975

A MOST GRACIOUS INVITATION

KEY TEXT: "My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day
long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame,
that seek my hurt." Psalm 71:24.

Call to Repentance o Sunday

October 12
1. What is the counsel given to Laodicea by the True Witness, and what
is implicit in this counsel? Revelation 3: 18.

NOTE: "I saw that this message [the testimony to the Laodiceans] would not
accomplish its work in a few short months. It is designed to arouse the people
of God, to discover to them their backslidings, and to lead to zealous repent-
ance, that they may be favored with the presence of Jesus, and be fitted for
the loud cry of the third angel." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 186.

2. What is the purpose of the message of Laodicea? Revelation 3:19.

NOTE: "No repentance is genuine that does not work reformation." -The
Desire of Ages, p. 555.
Message to Laodicea and 1888 o Monda)'
October 13
3. What special message was given to the professed people of God in
1888? Jeremiah 23:6.

NOTE: "We thank the Lord with all the heart that we have precious light to
present before the people, and we rejoice that we have a message for this time
which is present truth. The tidings that Christ is our righteousness has
brought relief to many, many souls, and God says to His people, 'Go forward.'
The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to our condition. How
plainly is pictured the position of those who think they have all the truth, who
take pride in their knowledge of the word of God, while its sanctifying power
has not been felt in their lives. The fervor of the love of God is wanting in their
hearts, but it is this very fervor oflove that makes God's people the light of the
world....
"In every meeting since the General Conference, souls have eagerly
accepted the precious message of the righteousness of Christ. We thank God
that there are souls who realize that they are in need of something which they
do not possess,-gold of faith and love, white raiment of Christ's
righteousness, eye-salve of spiritual discernment...." -Review and Herald,
July 23, 1889.

-12-
4. What message already given at that time was designed to bring the
church to repentance and close union with Christ? What are some of
the names applied by the Spirit of Prophecy and the Bible to those
messages? Revelation 3: 14, 19.

NOTE: " ... Will you not seek God most humbly, that you may give the
Laodicean message with clear, distinct utterance? Where are God's watchmen
who will see the peril and give the warning? Be assured that there are
messages to come from human lips under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
'Cry aloud, spare not, ... show My people their transgression, and the house
of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek Me daily, ... as a nation that did
righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God.' " -Testimonies to
Ministers, p. 296.
The appellations "Precious Light," "Present Truth," "Christ our
Righteousness," "the message to the Laodicean church," "Cry aloud, spare
not" (Isaiah 58:1), "the third angel's message in verity," are different names
for the one message.

A Most Precious Theme o Tuesday

October 14
5. What does the message of "Christ our Righteousness" have in com-
mon with the message given by the angel of Revelation 18: I? Psalm
35:27,28.

NOTE: "As foretold in the eighteenth of Revelation, the third angel's

message is to be proclaimed with great power by those who give the final
warning against the beast and his image [Revelation 18:1-6 quoted].
"This is the message given by God to be sounded forth in the loud cry of
the third angel." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 118.

6. What should be the theme of those who cherish and obey this precious
message? Psalm 71 :24.

A Precious Gift o Wednesday

October 15
7. If we fail of having the righteousness of Christ, is there any alter-
native? How does this appear in the sight of God? Isaiah 64:6.

NOTE: "The thought that the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us, not
because of any merit on our part, but as a free gift from God, is a precious
thought. The enemy of God and man is not willing that this truth should be
clearly presented; for he knows that if the people receive it fully, his power will
be broken ...." -Gospel Workers, p. 161.

-13-
8. What does the Scripture teach about righteousness? Ephesians 2:8;
Romans 5:9-11.

NOTE: "The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed; the

righteousness by which we are sanctified is imparted. The first is our title to
heaven, the second is our fitness for heaven." -Review and Herald, June 4,
1895.
Especially for His Professed People o Thursday
October 16
9. With whom fIrst should the precious message be shared? Matthew
10:6.

NOTE: " ... What disposition will these [tempted ones, whose souls have
ever been at war with the faithful reproving of sin] make of the message of the
True Witness to the Laodiceans? There can be no deception here. This
message must be borne to a lukewarm church by God's servants. It must
arouse His people from their security and dangerous deception in regard to
their real standing before God. This testimony, if received, will arouse to ac-
tion and lead to self-abasement and confession of sins...." -Testimonies,
vol. 3, p. 259.

10. What are the servants of God to do with the message of the True
Witness? What danger awaits those who do not heed the invitation?
Matthew 22:11.

NOTE: "God has raised up men to meet the necessity of this time who will
cry aloud and spare not, who will lift up their voice like a trumpet, and show
my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins. Their work is
not only to proclaim the law, but to preach the truth for this time, -the Lord
our righteousness...." -Review and Herald, August 13, 1889.
" ... When God puts His Spirit upon men, they will work. They will
proclaim the word of the Lord: they will lift up their voice like a trumpet. The
truth will not be diminished or lose its power in their hands. They will show
the people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins."
-Testimonies to Ministers, p.411.

LESSON RECAPITULATION o Friday

October 17
a. What is the basic purpose of the message to Laodicea?

b. What is embraced in the message of 1888, and what should it have

done for the church?

c. What is the central point of salvation?

-14-
d. What counterfeit does the enemy of souls offer the professed church of
God?

e. What should be the reaction of the minority class?

PERSONAL
a. How should we endeavor to present this message so that it will

Lesson 4 Sabbath, October 25, 1975

REACTIONS TO THE MESSAGE OF GOD

KEY TEXT: "Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was
necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to
you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves un-
worthy of everlasting life, 10, we turn to the Gentiles." Acts
13:46.

The Attitude of the Leading Men D Sunday

October 19
1. What attitude is revealed by the leaders of the established church,
and how does this lead them to reject the message needed by the
professed people of God? Matthew 24:48-51.

NOTE: "The Jews were looking for the Messiah; but He did not come as they
had predicted that He would, and if He were accepted as the Promised One,
their learned teachers would be forced to acknowledge that they had
erred. These leaders had separated themselves from God, and Satan worked
upon their minds to lead them to reject the Saviour. Rather than yield their
pride of opinion, they closed their eyes to all the evidences of His Messiahship,
and they not only rejected the message of salvation themselves, but they
steeled the hearts of the people against Jesus. Their history should be a
solemn warning to us. We need never expect that when the Lord has light for
His people, Satan will stand calmly by and make no effort to prevent them
from receiving it. He will work upon minds to excite distrust and jealousy and
unbelief. Let us beware that we do not refuse the light God sends, because it
does not come in a way to please us. Let not God's blessing be turned away
from us because we know not the time of our visitation. If there are any who do
not see and accept the light themselves, let them not stand in the way of
others. Let it not be said of this highly favored people, as of the Jews when the
good news of the kingdom was preached to them: 'Ye entered not in
yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.' " -Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 728.

2. What parallel exists between the religious leaders of God's people

now and in the time of Christ? Matthew 23: 13.

NOTE: "But there are those l who have stood for years resisting light,
cherishing the spirit of opposition] who despised the men and the message
they bore. They have taunted them with being fanatics, extremists, and
enthusiasts." -Testimonies to Ministers, p.97.

-16-
False Messages and Messengers D Monday
October 20
3. What can be expected when the Lord raises up messengers with a
special message? Jeremiah 23:21, 31, 32.

NOTE: "Men professing to have new light, claiming to be reformers, will

have great influence over a certain class who are convinced of the heresies that
exist in the present age and who are not satisfied with the spiritual condition
of the churches. With true, honest hearts, these desire to see a change for the
better, a coming up to a higher standard. If the faithful servants of Christ
would present the truth, pure and unadulterated, to this class, they would
accept it, and purify themselves by obeying it. But Satan, ever vigilant, sets
upon the track of these inquiring souls. Someone making high profession as a
reformer comes to them, as Satan came to Christ disguised as an angel of
light, and draws them still further from the path of right." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 144.
" ... One accepts some new and original idea which does not seem to con-
flict with the truth. He talks of it and dwells upon it until it seems to him to be
clothed with beauty and importance, for Satan has power to give this false
appearance. At last it becomes the all-absorbing theme, the one great point
around which everything centers; and the truthis uprooted from the heart."
-Ibid., vol. 5, p. 292.

4. Where particularly may we expect these deceptive messages?

Matthew 24:24 (last part).

NOTE: "There are a thousand temptations in disguise prepared for those

who have the light of truth; and the only safety for any of us is in receiving no
new doctrine, no new interpretation oUhe Scriptures, without first submitting
it to brethren of experience. Lay it before them in a humble, teachable spirit,
with earnest prayer; and if they see no light in it, yield to their judgment; for
'in the multitude of counselors there is safety.' "-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 293.
"Satan hopes to involve the remnant people of God in the general ruin
that is coming upon the earth. As the coming of Christ draws nigh, he will be
more determined and decisive in his efforts to overthrow them. Men and
women will arise professing to have some new light or some new revelation
whose tendency is to unsettle faith in the old landmarks. Their doctrines will
not bear the test of God's word, yet souls will be deceived... ." -Ibid., vol. 5,
p.295.

True and False Reformations Differenciated D Tuesday

October 21
5. Why do so many self-professed reformers drift away from the Bible
truth? Romans 16:17, 18.

-17-
NOTE: "When the Lord works through human instrumentalities, when men
are moved with power from on high, Satan leads his agents to cry,
'Fanaticism!' and to warn people not to go to extremes. Let all be careful how
they raise this cry; for though there is counterfeit coin, this does not lower the
value of that which is genuine. Because there are spurious revivals and
spurious conversions, it does not follow that all revivals are to be held in
suspicion...." -Gospel Workers, p. 170.

6. What differenciates between a true and a false reformation?

Colossians 2:18, 19.

NOTE: "I saw that the mysterious signs and wonders and false reformations
would increase and spread. The reformations that were shown me, were not
reformations from error to truth." -Early Writings, p. 45.
"I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no
countenance to those who would unsettle the established faith of the body.
God looked upon them with approbation." -Ibid., p. 258.

Reorganization of God's Visible Church D Wednesday

October 22
7. What makes it clear that the people of God in these last days will be
associated as an organized, visible church? Ephesians 4:11-16.

NOTE: "Some have advanced the thought that as we near the close of time,
every child of God will act independently of any religious organization. But I
have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as
every man's being independent. The stars of heaven are all under law, each in-
fluencing the other to do the will of God, yielding their common obedience to
the law that controls their action. And, in order that the Lord's work may ad-
vance healthfully and solidly, His people must draw together." -Gospel
Workers, p.487.

8. What must be associated in a true reformation?

NOTE: "A revival and a reformation must take place, under the ministration
of the Holy Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival
signifies a renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and
heart, a resurrection from spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganiza-
tion, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices...." -Review and
Herald, February 25, 1902.

Two Phases of the Fourth Message D Thursday

October 23
9. What work must be accomplished for the people of God by the Laodi-
cean message in order for them to receive the latter rain? Amos 4: 12.

-18-
10. What work will be performed by the fourth angel when the latter rain
is poured out? Acts 13:46; Matthew 22:8-10.

NOTE: "In this parable [of the wedding garment, Matthew 22:1-14], as in
that of the great supper, are illustrated the gospel invitation, its rejection by
the Jewish people, and the call of mercy to the Gentiles." -Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 307.
"The time of God's destructive judgments is the time of mercy for those
who have had no opportunity to learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord
look upon them. His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out
to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter." -Testimonies,
vol. 9, p. 97.

MESSAGE TO LAODICEA EXAMINED

KEY TEXT: "And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes,
that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young
man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses
and chariots of fire round about Elisha." 2 Kings 6:17.

Identity of the Addressee and the Author o Sunday

October 26
1. To whom is the seventh and last message specifically directed?
Revelation 3:14 (first part).

NOTE: "The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in
different periods of the Christian Era. The number 7 indicates completeness,
and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while
the symbols used reveal.the condition of the church at different periods in the
history of the world." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 585.
" ... These words [Revelation 2:1] are spoken to the teachers in the
church-those entrusted by God with weighty responsibilities. The sweet in-
fluences that are to be abundant in the church are bound up with God's
ministers, who are to reveal the love of Christ." -Ibid., p. 586.

2. To remove all doubt conceming the veracity of such a startling

message, how does the Author of the message identify Himself?
Revelation 3:14 (last part).

NOTE: "The testimony [to the church of the Laodiceans], so cutting and
severe, cannot be a mistake, for it is the True Witness who speaks, and His
testimony must be correct." -Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 253.

The Angel, Representative of the Church D Monday

October 27
3. Who are represented by the angel of the church of the Laodiceans?
Revelation 1:20; Malachi 2:7.

NOTE: "The stars of heaven are under His [Christ's] control. He fills them
with light. He guides and directs their movements. If He did not do this, they
would become fallen stars. So with His ministers. They are but instruments in
His hands, and all the good they accomplish is done through His power.
Through them His light is to shine forth...." -The Acts of the Apostles,
pp. 586, 587. .

-20-
4. To whom else, besides "the angel," is this message given? Revelation
3:14, 15.

NOTE: "The Laodicean message applies to the people of God who profess to
believe present truth. The greater part are lukewarm professors, having a
name but no zeal. ... The term 'lukewarm' is applicable to this class. They
profess to love the truth, yet are deficient in Christian fervor and devotion.
They dare not give up wholly and run the risk of the unbeliever, yet they are
unwilling to die to self and follow out closely the principles of their faith."
-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 87.

A Sad but Undeniable Condition D Tuesday

October 28
5. What is the unequivocal statement of the omniscient True Witness
concerning the actual condition of His professed church in this
period? Revelation 3:15, 16.

NOTE: "The dead, heartless performance of duty does not make us

Christians. We must get out of a lukewarm condition and experience a true
conversion, or we shall fail of heaven." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 89.

6. What deplorable condition makes necessary the counsels given by the

True Witness? Revelation 3:16, 18.

NOTE: "Again and again has the voice from heaven addressed you. Will you
obey this voice? Will you heed the counsel of the True Witness to seek the gold
tried in the fire, the white raiment, and the eyesalve?" - Testimonies, vol. 5,
p.233.

Precious Remedies D Wednesday

October 29
7. What is represented by the gold tried in the fire? 1 Peter 1:7.

NOTE: "Faith and love are the true riches, the pure gold which the True
Witness counsels the lukewarm to buy. However rich we may be in earthly
treasure, all our wealth will not enable us to buy the precious remedies that
cure the disease of the soul called lukewarmness....
"The gold here recommended as having been tried in the fire is faith and
love. It makes the heart rich; for it has been purged until it is pure, and the
more it is tested the more brilliant is its luster." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.

8. What is symbolized by the "white raiment" offered by Jesus? Revela-

tion 19:8.

-21-
NOTE: "The white raiment is purity of character, the righteousness of Christ
imparted to the sinner. This is indeed a garment of heavenly texture, that can
be bought only of Christ for a life of willing obedience." - Testimonies, vol. 4,
p.88.
Help to Realize the Need 0 Thursday
October 30
9. What does the "eyesalve" represent? Psalm 119:18; Matthew 20:32,
33.

NOTE: "The eyesalve is that wisdom and grace which enables us to discern
between the evil and the good, and to detect sin under any guise. God has
given His church eyes which He requires them to anoint with wisdom, that
they may see clearly...." -Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 88, 89.
"[T]he eyesalve is that spiritual discernment which will enable you to see
the wiles of Satan and shun them, to detect sin and abhor it, to see truth and
obey it." -Ibid., vol. 5, p. 233.

10. What conditions bring about the self-confident assertions of

Laodicea? Revelation 3:17.
,
NOTE: " ... As man yields to temptation, and indulges in sin, his mind
becomes darkened. The moral sense is perverted. The warnings of conscience
are disregarded, and its voice is less clearly heard. He gradually loses the
power to distinguish between right and wrong, until he has no true sense of his
standing before God.... When the Spirit of God, by message of reproof,
declares this to be his condition, he cannot see that the message is true...."
- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 682.

LESSON RECAPITULATION o Friday

October 31
a. What certainty do we have concerning both the Author and those ad-
dressed by the message to Laodicea?

b. To whom is the message to Laodicea addressed in reality?

c. What danger could also bring us into a lukewarm condition?

d. What remedies will cure the condition and what do these mean?

e. Why is this remedy essential although it does not actually cure of

itself?
PERSONAL
a. How can we apply this message to ourselves?

b. How far have we progressed with these remedies?

Lesson 6 Sabbath, November 8, 1975

APPLICATION OF THE MESSAGE

TO LAODICEA
KEY TEXT: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately
wicked: who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9.

The Application of Prescribed Remedies D Sunday

November 2
1. What class of people do not feel the need of any remedies? Mark 2:17.

NOTE: "The only hope for the Laodiceans is a clear view of their standing
before God, a knowledge of the nature of their disease." -Testimonies, vol. 4,
p.87.
"The Spirit of God did not illumine their minds, and they did not
perceive their sinfulness; therefore they did not feel the necessity of help."
-Ibid., vol. 4, p. 88.

2. What problem is all too often overlooked by professed Christians, and

how does God seek to help? Jeremiah 17:9; Proverbs 16:2.

NOTE: " ... The Lord in His providence brings men where He can test their
moral powers and reveal their motives of action, that they may improve what
is right in themselves and put away that which is wrong. God would have His
servants become acquainted with the moral machinery of their own hearts. In
order to bring this about, He often permits the fire of affliction to assail them
that they may become purified...." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 85.

Response Becomes an Individual Duty D Monday

November 3
3. When the leaders and the majority of the church members reject the
counsel of Christ to the Laodiceans, what is the result? Revelation
3:16.

NOTE: " ... The figure of spewing out of His mouth means that He cannot
offer up your prayers or your expressions of love to God. He cannot endorse
your teaching of His word or your spiritual work in anywise. He cannot present
your religious exercises with the request that grace be given you."
- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 408.

4. To whom is the message then directed? Revelation 3:20.

-23-
NOTE: "The True Witness says, 'Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.'
Rev. 3:20. Every warning, reproof, and entreaty in the word of God or through
His messengers is a knock at the door of the heart. It is the voice of Jesus ask-
ing for entrance." -The Desire of Ages, pp. 489, 490.

Reward for Those Who Respond D Tuesday

November 4
5. What will be seen in the lives of those who heed the counsel of the
True Witness? Proverbs 19:20.

NOTE: " ... But those who heed it [the warning to Laodicea], and zealously
go about the work of separating their sins from them in order to have the
needed graces, will be opening the door of their hearts that the dear Saviour
may come in and dwell with them. This class you will ever find in perfect har-
mony with the testimony of the Spirit of God." - Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 257.

6. What wonderful promise is given to those who overcome in these last

evil days? Revelation 3:21.

NOTE: "Christ has said: 'To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me
in My throne, even asI also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His
throne.' Are you overcoming? or are you being overcome by your own lusts and
appetites and passions?" -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 511.

Danger of Neglect D Wednesday

November 5
7. What are the angels instructed to do with them that reject the counsel
of the Lord? Hosea 4:17.

NOTE: " ... He [the Lord] will not restore unto them [His people] the joys of
His salvation while they are departing from the instructions of His word and
His Spirit. He will give grace to those who fear Him and walk in the truth, and
He will withdraw His blessing from all that assimilate to the world. Mercy and
truth are promised to the humble and penitent, and judgments are denounced
against the rebellious." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 190.

8. By the invitation published abroad for all to hear, what will be ex-
pected of them? Proverbs 1:20-23.

NOTE: " ... Individuals are tested and proved a length of time to see if they
will sacrifice their idols and heed the counsel of the True Witness. If any will r.
not be purified through obeying the truth, and overcome their selfishness, l
their pride, and evil passions, the angels of God have the charge: 'They are
joined to their idols, let them alone,' and they pass on to their work, leaving
these with their sinful traits unsubdued, to the control of evil angels... ."
-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 187.

-24-
Destiny Determined o Thursday
November 6
9. What important matter is often overlooked by those who give little
heed to the message that the Lord sent to His church? Ezekiel 18:9.

NOTE: "I saw that the testimony of the True Witness has not been half
heeded. The solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs
has been lightly esteemed, if not entirely disregarded." -Early Writings,
p.270

10. What does the Lord expect in response to His extended mercy? Ezekiel
18:30; Hosea 12:6.

NOTE: "This testimony [to the Laodiceans] must work deep repentance; all
who truly receive it will obey it and be purified." -Early Writings, p. 270.

c. What evidence will show that individuals have responded?

d. What danger confronts either a church or an individual who con-

tinually slights the divine invitation?

e. How will the future reflect present day attitudes?

A MATERIALLY POOR REMNANT

KEY TEXT: "I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor
people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord."
Zephaniah 3:12.

Christ's Followers Were Mostly Poor People D Sunday

November 9

1. What did Christ tell His disciples to encourage them not to become
concerned for material possessions? Luke 6:20.

2. What condition characterized the early church when it was a power in

the world? 2 Corinthians 6: 10.

NOTE: "The early Christians were indeed a peculiar people. Their blameless
deportment and unswerving faith were a continual reproof that disturbed the
sinner's peace. Though few in numbers, without wealth, position, or honorary
titles, they were a terror to evildoers wherever their character and doctrines
were known...." -The Great Controversy, p. 46.

Spiritual Riches Replace Material Ones D Monday

November 10
3. What example did Jesus give for all who would become spiritually
rich? 2 Corinthians 8:9.

NOTE: "The apostle [Paul] called upon them to consider the example of
Christ. The Commander of heaven gave Himself to a life to humiliation and
poverty that He might stand side by side with the fallen race, to restore the
moral image of God in man. The Lord Jesus was willing to become poor, that
through His humiliation and His death on the cross He might pay the ransom
for us.
"Whether rich or poor, we must never forget that the poverty of Christ
was a part of His legacy in humanity. It was not alone His betrayal in the gar-
den or His agony upon the cross that constituted the atonement. The humilia-
tion of which His poverty formed a part was included in His great sacrifice.
The whole series of sorrows which compassed humanity Christ bore upon His
divine soul (MS 1~, 1900)." -SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White
Comments, vol. 6, p. n03.

4. Give two known examples of men in the early church who followed the
example set by the Lord. John 19:38, 39; Acts 4:34, 35.

-26-
NOTE: "With Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus had borne the expense of the
burial of Jesus. The disciples had been afraid to show themselves openly as
Christ's followers, but Nicodemus and Joseph had come boldly to their aid.
The help of these rich and honored men was greatly needed in that hour of
darkness...." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 104.
"Now, when the Jews were trying to destroy the infant church,
Nicodemus came forward in its defense. No longer cautious and questioning,
he encouraged the faith of the disciples and used his wealth in helping to sus-
tain the church at Jerusalem and in advancing the work of the gospel. Those
who in other days had paid him reverence, now scorned and persecuted him,
and he became poor in this world's goods; yet he faltered not in the defense of
his faith." -Ibid., p. 105.
Learning to be Content D Tuesday
November 11
5. What is often the cause of much discontent among both the poor and
the not-so-poor? 1 Timothy 6:6-8.

NOTE: "Thankful hearts and kind looks are more valuable than wealth and
luxury, and contentment with simple things will make home happy if love be
there." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 622.

6. What temptation comes to the poor and to the rich when the heart is
drawn to material wealth? 1 Timothy 6:9-11.

NOTE: "A man may be avaricious, and yet excuse himself by saying that he
is working for the cause of God; but he obtains no reward, for God does not
want money that is obtained by overreaching or by any semblance of dis-
honesty." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 353.

Not Material Security D Wednesday

November 12
7. Although the professed church of God feels rich, what kind of people
are to be left in her? Zephaniah 3: 12 (first part).

8. In harmony with their religious teachers, what did the disciples think
was material evidence of divine approval? Luke 21 :5.

NOTE: " ... The buildings are indeed wonderful. You point to these walls as
apparently indestructible; but listen to My words: The day will come when
'there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown
down.' " -The Desire of Ages, p.627.
Danger of Overconfidence D Thursday
November 13
9. What Old Testament caution was given by the prophet to guard
against this danger? Jeremiah 7:4.

-27-
NOTE: " ... Some are in danger of being satisfied with the glimpses they
have had of the light and love of God, and so ceasing to advance. Watchfulness
and rrayer have not been maintained. At the very time when the acclamation
is made, 'The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these,' temp-
tations come in, and darkness gathers about the soul - earthliness,
selfishness, and self-glorification. There is a necessity for the Lord Himself to
communicate His own ideas to the soul. What a thought! - that instead of
our poor, earthly, contracted ideas and plans the Lord will communicate to us
His own ideas, His own thought, noble, broad, far-reaching, always leading
heavenward!" -Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 485, 486.

10. What additional argument was used by the apostatized leaders when
they directed attention from the truth to man? John 7:47-49.

NOTE: "The spirit which actuated those priests and rulers is still manifested
hv man.v who make a high profession of piety. They refuse to examine the
testimony of the Scriptures concerning the special truths for this time. They
point to their own numbers, wealth, and popularity, and look with contempt
upon the advocates of truth as few, poor, and unpopular, having a faith that
separates them from the world." -The Great Controversy, p. 596.

LESSON RECAPITULATION D Friday

November 14
a. Although few followers of Christ were rich, what assurance did He
give them?

b. What is basic to becoming spiritually rich rather than materially so?

c. What benefits derive from being content that our needs are met?

physical assets?

e. What arguments used in past ages are repeated again and again in

give you the kingdom." Luke 12:32.

Misplaced Confidence o Sunday

November 16
1. By the continued reference to numbers, income and knowledge of the
message, wherein is it evident that the Laodiceans have come to put
their trust? Revelation 3: 17.

NOTE: "It is not a great number of institutions, large buildings, and outward
displa.v that God requires, but the harmonious action of a peculiar people, a
people chosen by God and precious, united with one another, their life hid
with Christ in God." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 183.

2. In sharp contrast, where only can the faithful remnant put their
trust? Zephaniah 3: 12 (last part), 13.

NOTE: "Success does not depend upon numbers. God can deliver by few as
well as hy many. He is honored not so much by the great numbers as by the
character of those who serve Him." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.550.

True Riches o Monday

November 17
3. What kind of wealth is commended to us by the word of God?
1 Timothy 6:18, 19.

NOTE: "The glory, riches, and honor offered by the Son of God are of such
infinite value that it is beyond the power of men or even angels to give any just
idea of their worth, their excellence, their magnificence." -Testimonies,
vol. :2, p. 40.

4. What kind of poor are clearly identified by the apostle James, and
what contrast does he mention? James 2:5.

Futile Dependence on Numbers o Tuesday

November 18
5. What assurance is given to the faithful remnant with particular
reference to the fact that they are few in number? Luke 12:32.

-29-
NOTE: "And as they [the disciples] went out in their Master's name, facing
reproach and poverty and persecution, they often strengthened their hearts by
repeating His injunction, spoken on this last journey, 'Fear not, little flock; for
it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom ... .' "-The Desire
of Ages, p. 496.

6. What divine promise assurefl the finishing of the work although the
true remnant is poor and few in number? Zechariah 4:6.

NOTE: "The very same difficulties which were created to hinder the restora-
tion and upbuilding of the work of God, the great mountains of difficulty
which loomed in Zerubbabel's way, will be met by all who today are loyal to
God and to His work." -SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments,
vol. 4, p. 1179.

A Work Beyond Human Devising o Wednesday

November 19
7. What is the nature of the wonderful trust committed to those who will
walk with their Lord? 1 Peter 2:9.

NOTE: " ... They [the Lord's servants] have faithfully given the warning,
looking to God and to His word alone.... The work which they have under-
taken seems far beyond their ability to accomplish. They are threatened with
destruction. The enthusiasm which animated them is gone; yet they cannot
turn back. Then, feeling their utter helplessness, they flee to the Mighty One
for strength. They remember that the words which they have spoken were not
theirs, but His who bade them give the warning. God put the truth into their
hearts, and they could not forbear to proclaim it." -The Great Controversy,
pp. 608, 609.

8. What is the extent of the work envisioned by the apostle? Romans

10:18.

Promises of God o Thursday

November 20
9. What is the attitude of God toward the faithful few? Deuteronomy
32:10.

NOTE: "The remnant church will be brought into great trial and distress.
Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will feel the
ire of the dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his subjects, he
has gained control of the apostate churches; but here is a little company that
are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph
would be complete.... " -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 231.

-30-
10. What should those whose hearts are knit with Jesus remember in time
of persecution? Zechariah 2:8 (last part).

NOTE: "Jesus sees His true church on the earth, whose greatest ambition is
to co-operate with Him in the grand work of saving souls. He hears their
prayers, presented in contrition and power, and Omnipotence cannot resist
their plea for the salvation of any tried, tempted member of Christ's
body.... The church, soon to enter upon her most severe conflict, will be the
object most dear to God upon earth...." -Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 19,

DANGERS FROM WITHOUT

KEY TEXT: "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer
persecution." 2 Timothy 3:12.

Persecution to be Expected o Sunday

November 23
1. What did Jesus reveal to the disciples in the Sermon on the Mount?
Matthew 5:11.

NOTE: " ... He [Jesus] knew that they [His disciples] would often suffer
from disappointment and discouragement, that they wouldmeet with decided
opposition, that they would be insulted, and their testimony rejected. Well He
knew that in the fulfillment of their mission, the humble men who listened so
attentively to His words were to bear calumny, torture, imprisonment, and
death, and He continued: [Matthew 5:10-12 quoted]." -The Desire of Ages,
p.305.

2. What can be expected of all men of the world, and what must the
Christian do? Matthew 10:22.

NOTE: " ... Though deprived of every comfort, shut away from the light of
the sun, making their home in the dark but friendly bosom of the earth, they
[the witnesses for Jesus] uttered no complaint. With words of faith, patience,
and hope, they encouraged one another to endure privation and distress. The
loss of every earthly blessing could not force them to renounce their belief in
Christ...." -The Great Controversy, p.41.

Persecution and its Provocation o Monday

November 24
3. In what period was this warning of Jesus particularly fulfilled?
Revelation 2: 10.

NOTE: "The history of the early church testified to the fulfillment of the
Saviour's words. The powers of earth and hell arrayed themselves against
Christ in the person of His followers.... The fires of persecution were
kindled. Christians were stripped of their possessions and driven from their
homes. They 'endured a great fight of afflictions.' Hebrews 10:32. They 'had
trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and im-
prisonment.' Hebrews 11:36. Great numbers sealed their testimony with their
blood. Noble and slave, rich and poor, learned and ignorant, were alike slain
without mercy." -The Great Controversy, pp. 39, 40.

-32-
4. For what reason is persecution inevitable, and what conclusion
should we make when it is relatively absent? 2 Timothy 3:12.

NOTE: "Let there be a revival of the faith and power of the early church, and
the spirit of persecution will be revived, and the fires of persecution will be
rekindled." -The Great Controversy, p. 48.
An Example D Tuesday
November 25
5. What experience recorded in the Old Testament sets us an example,
and what reply should we be ready to give? Daniel 3:17, 18.

NOTE: "As in the days of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, so in the clos-
ing period of earth's history the Lord will work mightily in behalf of those who
stand steadfastly for the right. He who walked with the Hebrew worthies in
the fiery furnace will be with His followers wherever they are. His abiding
presence will comfort and sustain...." -Prophets and Kings, p. 513.

6. What prophecy makes clear that such experiences must be expected in

the near future? Revelation 13:17.

NOTE: "There is a prospect before us of a continued struggle, at the risk of

imprisonment, loss of property, and even of life itself, to defend the law of
God, which is made void by the laws of men. In this situation worldly policy
will urge an outward compliance with the laws of the land, for the sake of
peace and harmony...." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 712.
Causes of Persecution . D Wednesday
November 26
7. When the judgments of God are manifest in the earth, what reaction
may be expected in harmony with past experience? 1 Kings 18:17.

NOTE: "It is natural for the wrongdoer to hold the messengers of God respon-
sible for the calamities that come as the sure result of a departure from the
way of righteousness. Those who place themselves in Satan's power are unable
to see things as God sees them. When the mirror of truth is held up before
them, they become indignant at the thought of receiving reproof. ... "
-Prophets and Kings, pp. 139, 140.
"In the days of the Reformation its enemies charged all the evils of fana-
ticism upon the very ones who were laboring most earnestly against it. A
similar course was pursued by the opposers of the advent movement. And not
content with misrepresenting and exaggerating the errors of the extremists
and fanatics, they circulated unfavorable reports that had not the slightest
semblance of truth...." -The Great Controversy, p. 397.

8. What is a New Testament example of the guilty venting their wrath

on the reprover? Mark 6:17-19.

-33-
NOTE: "To many minds a deep mystery surrounds the fate of John the Bap-
tist. ... All who follow Christ will wear the crown of sacrifice. They will surely
be misunderstood by selfish men, and will be made a mark for the fierce
assaults of Satan. It is this principle of self-sacrifice that his kingdom is es-
tablished to destroy, and he will war against it wherever manifested." -The
Desire of Ages, p. 223.

No Fear When with God o Thursday

9. What will be the only safeguard for the people of God in these last
days? Isaiah 8:20.

NOTE: "Our watchword is to be: 'To the law and to the testimony: if they
speak not accordin~ to this word, it is because there is no light in them.' Isaiah
8:20. We have a Bible full of the most precious truth. It contains the alpha
and omega of knowledge." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 299.

10. What certainty will give strength to the faith needed in the face of the
persecutors? Romans 8:31.

NOTE: " ... In every crisis His people may confidently declare, 'If God be for
us, who can be against us?' Romans 8:31. However craftily the plots of Satan
and his agents may be laid, God can detect them, and bring to naught all their
eounsels. The response of faith today will be the response made by Nehemiah,
'Our God shall fight for us;' for God is in the work, and no man can prevent its
ultimate success." -Prophets and Kings, p. 64q.

DANGERS FROM WITHIN

KEY TEXT: "For rknow this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves
enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own
selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away
disciples after them." Acts 20:29, 30.

False Teachers o Sunday

November 30
1. What serious warning was given by the apostle to the early church?
Acts 20:29, 30.

NOTE: " ... Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the
truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the
most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepers are
brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the
most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false
reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 608.

2. How had the Lord Himself anticipated and warned of this danger
from within the church? Matthew 7:15.

NOTE: "Many will stand in our pulpits with the torch of false prophecy in
their hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan." -Testimonies to
Ministers, pp. 409, 410.
"Open opposition may be fierce and cruel, but it is fraught with far less
peril to God's cause then is the secret enmity of those who, while professing to
serve God, are at heart the servants of Satan." -Prophets and Kings, p. 658.
Those Who Have Left the Faith . o Monday
December 1
3. Who are the most effective agents to oppose the work of God? John
6:66.

NOTE: "As those disaffected disciples [see John 6:60-66] turned away from
Christ, a different spirit took control of them. They could see nothing attrac-
tive in Him whom they had once found so interesting. They sought out His
enemies, for they were in harmony with their spirit and work. They misint&-
preted His words, falsified His statements, and impugned His motives. They
sustained their course by gathering up every item that could be turned against
Him; and such indignation was stirred up by these false reports that His life
was in danger." -The Desire of Ages, pp. 392, 393.

-35-
4. Against what danger did Paul have to warn the Colossian church?
Colossians 2: 18.

NOTE: "Christ had foretold that deceivers would arise, through whose in-
fluence 'iniquity' should 'abound,' and 'the love of many' should 'wax cold.'
Matthew 24:12. He had warned the disciples that the church would be in more
danger from this evil than from the persecution of her enemies...." -Acts of
the Apostles, p. 473.

"It is not the open and avowed enemies of the cause of God that are most
to be feared. Those who, like the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin, come
with smooth words and fair speeches, apparently seeking for friendly alliance
with God's children, have greater power to deceive. Against such every soul
should be on the alert, lest some carefully concealed and masterly snare take
him unaware. And especially today, while earth's history is closing, the Lord
requires of His children a vigilance that knows no relaxation .... " -Prophets
and Kings, pp. 570, 571.

Dangers Among Members o Tuesday

December 2
5. What is another internal danger always threatening the true church
of God? James 4:4.

NOTE: "Like Israel, Christians too often yield to the influence of the world
and conform to its principles and customs, in order to secure the friendship of
the ungodly; but in the end it will be found that these professed friends are the
most dangerous of foes. The Bible plainly teaches that there can be no har-
mony between the people of God and the world...." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 559.

"Christians are constantly seeking to imitate the practices of those who

worship the god of this world. Many urge that by uniting with worldlings and
conforming to their customs, they might exert a stronger influence over the
ungodly. But all who pursue this course thereby separate from the Source of
their strength." -Ibid., p. 607.

6. What other practice should never be tolerated among church

members? Leviticus 19:16.

NOTE: "Difficulties are often caused by the vendors of gossip, those

whispered hints and suggestions poison unsuspecting minds and separate the
closest friends. Mischief-makers are seconded in their evil work by the many
who stand with open ears and evil heart, saying: 'Report, ... and we will
report it.' This sin should not be tolerated among the followers of Christ. No
Christian parent should permit gossip to be repeated in the family circle or
remarks to be made disparaging the members of the church." -Testimonies,
vo!. 5, pp. 241, 242.

-36-
A voiding Snares of Satan D Wednesday
December 3
7. What particularly is expected of the people of God in all their dealings
especially as church members? 1 Thessalonians 4: 12; 5:22.

NOTE: "To the multitude, and afterward more fully to His disciples, Jesus
explained that defilement comes not from without, but from within. Purity
and impurity pertain to the sou!. It is the evil deed, the evil word, the evil
thought, the transgression of the law of God, not the neglect of external, man-
made ceremonies, that defiles a man." -The Desire of Ages, p.397.

8. What assurance has the Lord given that Satan will not prevail
against the true church of God? Matthew 16: 18.

NOTE: " ... The church is to be fed with manna from heaven, and to be kept
under the sole guardianship of His grace. Clad in complete armor of light and
righteousness, she enters upon her final conflict. The dross, the worthless
material, will be consumed, and the influence of the truth testifies to the
world of its sanctifying, ennobling character...." -Testimonies to
Ministers, pp. 17, 18.

The Divine Purpose D Thursday

December 4
9. Through all the tribulations and shakings, what promise of God
always remains? Amos 9:9.

NOTE: " ... The church will yet see troublous times. She will prophesy in
sackcloth. But although she must meet heresies and persecutions, although
she must battle with the infidel and the apostate, yet by the help of God she is
bruising the head of Satan. The Lord will have a people as true as steel, and
with faith as firm as the granite rock. They are to be His witnesses in the
world, His instrumentalities to do a special, a glorious work in the day of His
preparation." -Testimonies, vo!. 4, pp. 594, 595.

10. For what reason does the Lord permit tests and trials from both
without and within the church? Ephesians 5:27.

NOTE: " ... The church, endowed with the righteousness of Christ, is His
depositary, in which the riches of His mercy, His grace, and His love, are to
appear in full and final display. Christ looks upon His people in their purity
and perfection, as the reward of His humiliation, and the supplement of His
glorY,-Christ, the great Center, from whom radiates all glory." -The Desire

The Temple Cleansed o Sunday

December 7
1. What work was done by Christ at the beginning of His public
ministry? John 2:14-16.

2. What was again necessary at the close of His ministry? Luke 19:45,
46.

NOTE: "When Jesus beg/m His public ministry, He cleansed the temple
from its sacrilegious profanation. Among the last acts of His ministry was the
second cleansing of the temple." -SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White
Comments, vol. 7, p. 985.

M adem Application o Monday

December 8
3. How do we know that the Lord will have a pure church in our day?
Ephesians 5:25, 26.

NOTE: "God is sifting His people. He will have a clean and holy church. We
cannot read the heart of man. But the Lord has provided means to keep the
church pure." -Testimonies, vol. I, p. 99.

4. By what means is the church to be cleansed and kept pure? Titus 2: 14.

:NOTE: "God's love for His church is infinite. His care over His heritage is
unceai;;ing. He suffers no affliction to come upon the church but such as is es-
sential for her purification, her present and eternal good. He will purify His
church even as He purified the temple at the beginning and close of His
ministry on earth. All that He brings upon the church in test and trial comes
that His people may gain deeper piety and more strength to carry the
triumphs of the cross to all parts of the world...." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p.
228.

-39-
Shaking in the Church D Tuesday
December 9
5. What Old Testament prophecy foretold the shaking and sifting of
God's people? Amos 9:9.

NOTE: "The numbers of this company [the little company seen traveling a
narrow pathway] had lessened. Some had been shaken out and left by the
way. The careless and indifferent, who did not join with those who prized vic-
tory and salvation enough to perseveringly plead and agonize for it, did not ob-
tain it, and they were left behind in darkness ... " -Early Writings, p. 271.

6. When the sieve is moving, who is shaken out? 1 John 2:19.

NOTE: "There is chaff among us, and this is why we are so weak. Some are
constantly leaning to the world.... These persons of two minds will ever have
objections to the plain, pointed testimony which reproves individual wrongs.
In this refining time these persons will either be wholly converted, and sanc-
tified by obeying the truth, or they will be left with the world, where they
belong, to receive their reward with them." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 288.
"All who wish to draw off from the body [of the truth] will have oppor-
tunity. Something will arise to test everyone. The great sifting time is just
before us. The jealous and the faultfinding, who are watching for evil, will be
shaken out." -Ibid., vol. 1, p. 251.
Fiery Trials Used of God D Wednesday
December 10
7. What are the means used of God to accomplish His purpose? 1 Peter
4:12.

NOTE: " ... God is the refiner and purifier of souls; in the heat of the furnace
the dross is separated forever from the true silver and gold of the Christian
character. Jesus watches the test. He knows what is needed to purify the
precious metal that it may reflect the radiance of His divine love."
- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 86.

8. What precious truth should be indelibly impressed on the mind by

such experiences? Hebrews 12:5, 6.

NOTE: "The purification of the people of God cannot be accomplished

without their suffering. God permits the fires of affliction to consume the
dross, to separate the worthless from the valuable, that the pure metal may
shine forth. He passes us from one fire to another, testing our true worth. Ifwe
cannot bear these trials, what will we do in the time of trouble? If prosperity or
adversity discover falseness, pride, or selfishness in our hearts, what shall we
do when God tries every man's work as by fire, and lays bare the secrets of all
hearts?" -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 85.

-40-
True Unity o Thursday
December 11
9. What experience had to come to the early church prior to receiving the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit? Acts 1:14; 2:1.

NOTE: "Notice that it was after the disciples had come into perfect unity,
when they were no longer striving for the highest place, that the Spirit was
poured out. They were of one accord. All differences had been put away. And
the testimony borne of them after the Spirit had been given is the same. Mark
the word: 'The multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one
soul.' Acts 4:32. The Spirit of Him who died that sinners might live animated
the entire congregation of believers." -Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 20, 21.

10. What similar experience will be needed by the church before the latter
rain will empower them to give the final warning with a loud cry?
John 17:21.

NOTE: "Before the final visitation of God's judgments upon the earth there
will be among the people of the Lord such a revival of primitive godliness as
has not been witnessed since apostolic times." -The Great Controversy,
p.464.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, December 20,1975

A FINAL WORK FOR THE CHURCH

KEY TEXT: "And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall
purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that
they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness."
Malachi 3:3.

The First Work o Sunday

December 14
1. What fundamental work must be accomplished in the experience of
every believer who will be able to receive the latter rain? Acts 3:19.

NOTE: " ... For the outpouring of the Spirit every lover of the cause of truth
should pray. And as far as lies in our power, we are to remove every hindrance
to His working. The Spirit can never ·be poured out while variance and
bitterness toward one another are cherished by the members of the church.
Envy, jealousy, evil surmising, and evilspeaking are of Satan, and they effec-
t ually bar the way against the Holy Spirit's working.... " -Testimonies,
\'O!. 6, p. 42.
" ... Only those who are living up to the light they have will receive
greater light. Unless we are daily advancing in the exemplification of the ac-
tive Christian virtues, we shall not recognize the manifestations of the Holy
Spirit in the latter rain. It may be falling on hearts all around us, but we shall
not discern or receive it." -Testimonies to Ministers, p.507.

2. What work must first take place in the heart of every believer as well
as in the church? 1 John 3:3.

NOTE: "It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse
t he soul temple of every defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as
the early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost." -Testimonies,
vo!. 5, p. 214.

A Danger to be A voided o Monday

December 15
3. What mistake do many church members make unconsciously?
Matthew 24:48.

NOTE: "I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful and
were looking to the time of 'refreshing' and the 'latter rain' to fit them to stand
in the day of the Lord and to live in His sight. Oh, how many I saw in the time
of trouble without a shelter! They had neglected the needful preparation;
therefore they could not receive the refreshing that all must have to fit them to
live in the sight of a holy God...." -Early Writings, p. 71.

-42-
4. What counsel was given by the apostle Paul to prevent this danger?
Hebrews 6:11, 12.

NOTE: "As the disciples waited for the fulfillment of the promise [the out-
pouring of the Spirit], they humbled their hearts in true repentance and con-
fessed their unbelief." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 36.
"These days of preparation were days of deep heart searching. The dis-
ciples felt their spiritual need and cried to the Lord for the holy unction that
was to fit them for the work of soul saving." -Ibid., p. 37.
Importance to be Recognized o Tuesday
December 16
5. What simile is used to show the concern 10r the purity of the church?
2 Corinthians 11 :2. .

NOTE: "I saw that all heaven is interested in our salvation; and shall we be
indifferent? Shall we be careless, as though it were a small matter whether we
are saved or lost? Shall we slight the sacrifice that has been made for us?"
-'!'('stimonies, vol. 1, p. 124.

6. What shows the intensity of the concern that should be in the

shepherds for the purity of their flock? Galatians 4:19.

NOTE: "Let the sin of pride be put away, let all superf1uities of dress be over-
come, and repentance toward God be exercised for the highhanded robbery
toward Him which has withheld money which should f10w into the treasury to
sustain the work of God in its mission fields. Let the work of reformation, of
true conversion, be set before and urged upon the people. Let our works, our
deportment, correspond with the work for this time, that we may say, 'Follow
me as I follow Christ.' Let us humble our souls before God by humiliation,
fasting and prayer, repentance of sin and putting it away." -Selected
M('ssages, book 2, p. 379.
Another Warning o Wednesday
December 17
7. After the careless and indifferent are shaken out from the church,
what will these apostates recognize when it is too late? Jeremiah 8:20.

NOTE: "Those who refuse to be hewed by the prophets and fail to purify
their souls in obeying the whole truth, and who are willing to believe that their
condition is far better than it really is, will come up to the time of the falling of
the plagues, and then see that they needed to be hewed and squared for the
building." -Early Writings, p. 71.

8. What merciful invitation was given by the same prophet prior to this
experience? Jeremiah 29: 13.

-43-
NOTE: "Thus will the truth be brought into practical life, and thus will be
answered the prayer of Christ, uttered just before His humiliation and death:
'That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they
also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.'
,John 17:21. The love of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the
world that we have been with Jesus and learned of Him ...." -Testimonies,
vol. 6, p. 401.
A Wholehearted Work 0 Thursday
December 18
9. What merciful invitation is still extended to the people of God? Isaiah
1:16, 17.

NOTE: "God is leading out a people who are peculiar. He will cleanse and
purify them, and fit them for translation. Every carnal thing will be separated
from God's peculiar treasures until they shall be like gold seven times
purified." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 431.
10. What thoroughness is necessary, and what is the true nature of this
work? Joel 2:12, 13.

NOTE: "Brethren, make it manifest that you are wholly on the Lord's side.
Let the truth of God's holy word reveal transgression and sin and manifest the
sanctifying power of truth upon human hearts. A haughty spirit must not
come in to mar the work of God." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 249.

TRUE UNITY IN THE CHURCH

KEY TEXT: "That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in
Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may
believe that Thou hast sent Me." John 17:21.

True Unity D Sunday

December 21
1. How did Jesus say Christians can give the world a strong evidence by
which they may know the work of God? John 17:23.

NOTE: "That union and love might exist among His disciples was the
burden of our Saviour's last prayer for them prior to His crucifixion. With the
agony of the cross before Him, His solicitude was not for Himself, but for those
whom He should leave to carry forward His work in the earth. The severest
trials awaited them, but Jesus saw that their greatest danger would be from a
spirit of bitterness and division...." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 236.

2. What condition did Paul say should exist in the Corinthian (and all
professed Christian) churches? 1 Corinthians 1: 10.

The Joy and Beauty of Unity D Monday

December 22

3. How was the power and beauty of true unity recognized by the
Psalmist? Psalm 133:1.

NOTE: " ... Mark the prayer of Christ: 'That they all may be one; as Thou,
Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the
world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.' The unity of the church is the con-
vincing evidence that God has sent Jesus into the world as its Redeemer. This
is an argument which worldlings cannot controvert...." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 620.

4. How did the apostle Paul stress this same thought to the Hebrews?
Hebrews 13:1.

NOTE: " ... Satan is ever seeking to divide the faith and hearts of God's
people. He well knows that union is their strength, and division their
weakness. It is important and essential that all of Christ's followers under-
stand Satan's devices and with a united front meet his attacks and vanquish
him. They need to make continual efforts to press together even if it be at
some sacrifice to themselves." -Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 435.

Introduction of Divisions o Tuesday
December 23
5. What is a common method used by Satan in opposing the work of
Christ in His church? 1 Corinthians 11:18.

NOTE: "Says the great deceiver: ...

" 'We must cause distraction and division. We must destroy their anxiety
for their own souls, and lead them to criticize, to judge, and to accuse and con-
demn one another, and to cherish selfishness and enmity. For these sins, God
banished us from His presence; and all who follow our example will meet a
similar fate.' " -Testimonies to Ministers, p.475.

6. How did the apostle tell the Romans to combat this difficulty?
Romans 16:17.

Love Overcomes All o Wednesday

December 24
7. What is the real reason for envy, strife, and division in the church,
and what should be done to combat it? 1 Corinthians 3:3.

NOTE: "Upon the occurrence of trials in the church let every member ex-
amine his own heart to see if the cause of trouble does not exist within. By
spiritual pride, a desire to dictate, an ambitious longing for honor or position,
a lack of self-control, by the indulgence of passion or prejudice, by instability
or lack of judgment, the church may be disturbed and her peace sacrificed."
- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 241.

8. What will certainly prevent this problem from beginning in the

church? 2 Corinthians 13:5.

God's Ideal o Thursday

December 25
9. Why should the people of God be united as never before in these last
days? Mark 3:24, 25.

NOTE: "A house divided against itself cannot stand. When Christians con-
tend, Satan comes in to take control. How often has he succeeded in destroy-
ing the peace and harmony of churches." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 244.

10. What high standard must be reached by the church before she is fit to
be used in the final work? Ephesians 4:13.

NOTE: "In the fourth chapter of Ephesians the plan of God is so plainly and
simply revealed that all His children may lay hold upon the truth. Here the

-46-
means which He has appointed to keep unity in His church, that its members
may reveal to the world a healthy religious experience, is plainly declared (MS
