Background Lifestyle that is accompanied with a lot of ease has made the society
to become individuals categorized as sedentary life. The decline in individual
awareness on the importance of physical activity upon their health, especially in
one of the vital organ which is lung, has encouraged the author to conduct a study
on the effect of physical activity on vital lung capacity.
Objectives To determine whether physical activity affect vital lung capacity and
did light and heavy activity had an impact in vital lung capacity difference.
Methods Using cross sectional design. Data measured was light and heavy
physical activity collected through IPAQ (International Physical Activity
Questionnaire) and vital lung capacity in percent (%) measured with spirometry.
Data was analyzed with unpaired T test with α = 0,05 using SPSS programme.
Results Physical activity had a significant effect on vital lung capacity with p
value = 0,015 (p value < 0,05). The average vital lung capacity on light activity
was 2.92 L, whereas heavy activity was 3.39 L.
Conclusion Physical activity had an effect on vital lung capacity and vital lung
capacity on heavy activity was larger than light activity.
