DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE HOMES

Your local community is looking to redevelop a block of land which can fit 24 homes.
Your task is to design a home that can be built in the new development.

The community is looking to make the redevelopment as eco-friendly as possible, your

task is to design a home that uses as many sustainable features as possible.

GENERATING DESIGNS

You will be required to research sustainable homes and identify some sustainable features that
you could include in your home. From this research you will then be required to create a draft
design and a final design of your home.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Your final house design must include at least
5 sustainable features. The base structure of
your home must be made from a shoe box,
how you choose to do this is your choice (can
have single or double storey). During
construction you must also use as many
recycled materials as possible.
This project will run over one whole term
commencing in week 2, each lesson running
for 50 minutes. Time will be allocated for
research, designing, planning and building.
During one lesson we will also have a guest
speaker into the classroom who will help us
answer some questions we have.

EVALUATION

Students will be assessed on how well they work throughout the research, planning, and
building phases. Each section of work will be collected for marking, observations will also be
taken throughout lessons.

- What is a sustainable home?
Planning:
- What rooms need to be included when building a home?
- What changes did you make to your draft design?
Building:
- List the sustainable features you have used in your home.
- What recycled materials did you use to construct you home?

PRESENTATION

Your home will be presented at the end of term at an exhibition which your parents and family
will be invited to. Along with presenting your home you will also present your research and draft
designs.
