INTERIOR SPACES
• Interior Spaces:
 Formed by building a structural system, further
defined by wall and ceiling planes;
 Relate to other spaces;
 May have openings;
 Designed for various activities to be held.

• Definition:
“the architectural elements which define the
physical limits of buildings and rooms are interior
spaces”.

Evolution of Interior Spaces
 A single man requires a single space – initial the space is
termed as a hut, today a room;
 Factors that converted a hut to different functional rooms
are:
– Different activities;
– Various requirements e.g. wife, children etc.;
– Increased income;
– Altered ideas of comfort and luxury;
– Pressure from family members and friends;
– Compelling thought of higher status.

 Silently communicate to people;


 Support behavior, organize life styles and even
challenge imagination;
 Promote personal comfort and enhance security;
 “desirable” living space vary with the individual
and their values;
 Average families spend between one quarter or
one third of their total income on either owning
or renting a living space.

INTERIOR DESIGN
 Importance: most of us spend a major part of our lives
indoors. A research shows an average people spend
about 80% of our time inside;
 Purpose: protects us against the weather, provides
privacy and gives places where we can keep the things;
 Essential: Special technology is demanded for special
functions like HVAC, refrigeration, television, computer,
automobile etc.

Definition:
“Interior design is the total creative solution of an open
internal space. It encompasses the conceptual planning,
aesthetic solutions applied to achieve the desired result.”

INTERIOR DECORATION

After designing, the interior space is decorated with


interior elements and accessories for total presentation to
look:
• aesthetically pleasing,
• psychologically satisfying and
• expressive creative items giving a good effect on the
overall theme.

Definition:
“the art and practice of selecting, organizing in surface
covering, draperies, furniture and furnishing of an interior.”

When do we need interior design?

 When new homes require complete design from


scratch,
 When interior materials wear out, need to
refurnishing and replaced,
 When needed remodeling and re-furnishing,
 When fashion changes, updating with new
materials, paints and color.

Interior design as a profession

An interior designer is a person


who is considered a professional in the field of
interior design or one who designs interiors as
part of their job .
