CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO INTERIOR SPACE
PLANNING

1.1 What is space planning?

Space planning is the process of analyzing how space in structures and

rooms will be used. Good space planning considers possible space uses and
ensures that they're used efficiently. The process results in a space plan, a
drawing that identifies the needs and required elements of spaces.
Planning is an integral part of interior design. Space planning begins at the
architectural level. If you want a room to be of a specific size it has to be built
with those dimensions. To change the room size of an existing structure it
would require structural modifications to the interiors.

To quite a large extent, space planning constitutes designing the given area to
meet the required specifications. Interior design and space planning go hand in
hand. You cannot have one without the other.

1.2 What is Interior Space Planning?

Interior space planning allows you to define a room according to its

appropriate function. It also ensures that you make maximum use of the
available area. Interior planning is the end of clutter, chaos, and confusion in a
room. It helps to organize your room to serve its intended purpose.
What defines an interior space?
Interior space means an enclosed portion of a public and commercial building,
including, but not limited to, an exterior hallway, connecting structure, portico,
or mechanical system used to condition an enclosed space.

These interior design elements include space, line, forms, light, colour,
texture and pattern; and keeping them balanced is the key to creating an
aesthetically pleasing interior.

Rather than allowing stylistic preferences or personal tastes alone to dictate the
layout of a home, space planning requires interior designers to take into account
other aspects of proper design, which include at least the following
considerations:

1. The types of spaces in a specific home or building, which generally fall into 4
categories:

 Social (living room or dining area)

 Private (bedroom)
 Work (home office)
 Storage (closet, shelving, etc.)

1.3 All about interior design space planning

1. Analyse your space.
2. Set things around the focal point.
3. Lighting resources.
4. Create circulation.
5. Divide your space.
6. Don't clutter the space.
7. Maintain a balance.
8. Make your space look bigger.
9. The importance of planning should not be undermined. Interior space
planning is very critical for highly functional spaces. For example, your
kitchen, bedroom, office workstation area, etc., are areas that have a lot of
activity. These rooms have to be planned according to the functions they
serve. A conference room or a guest bedroom, which is sparingly used,
doesn’t need much space planning. The focus is more on aesthetics rather
than the functionality of the space.
10.The functionality of the room defines its interior space design. Using the
available space in an efficient manner is the main crux of interior
planning. Interior space planning allows you to define a room according
to its appropriate function. It also ensures that you make maximum use of
the available area. Interior planning is the end of clutter, chaos, and
confusion in a room. It helps to organize your room to serve its intended
purpose.
