Home Economics is a field of study that deals with the relationship

between individual, families, communities and environment in which they live.
Home economics, or family and consumer sciences, is a subject
concerning human development, personal and family finances, consumer issues,
housing and interior design, nutrition and food preparation, as well as textiles
and apparel.

History:
The study of home economics began in the United States after the
American Revolution. In colonial America, as in the Old World, a young
woman received instruction in homemaking and child care primarily at home.
Home economics also teaches students how to be savvy consumers. It helps
students learn how to budget and spend their money wisely. This class teaches
things that teens, who are growing into adulthood, should utilize in their
everyday life, like patience, attentiveness, situational awareness, etc. However,
home economics legitimately created opportunities for women and greatly
impacted American society, creating vocational and economic opportunities for
women and educating boys and men about domestic skills.
In 1899, MIT chemist Ellen H. Richards (1842–1911) instigated a series
of annual “Lake Placid Conferences” (1899–1908) that became known as the
foundation of the home economics movement. The Smith-Lever Act of 1914
and the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 created federal funds for "vocational
education agriculture, trades and industry, and homemaking" and created the
Office of Home Economics. With this funding, the United States was able to
create more homemaking educational courses all across the country.

Development and Importance:

The development of home economics shows that the satisfaction of
people's social and economic needs has always been its broad aim through
history. Home economics focuses on the family as ecosystem and the
improvement of the individual's interaction with the environment. Home
economics teaches students practical skills for daily living. It gives students a
lot of time to do practical work and to prepare them for their future. It teaches
the family how to plan, cook, serve and eat good food. it helps members of the
family prepare for their expected roles in the society. It helps the family to
manage their homes effectively. Home Economics helps to train family
members in child care. ne area of home economics that is considered to be
among the most essential is the emphasis on personal development, decision
making and intrapersonal skills.

Aim of Home Economics:

Home Economics is a subject through which many skills can be
developed - in particular the practical skills involved in planning, preparing,
cooking and serving food. To develop awareness of self-help habits and active
participation in decision-making at home, in school, and in the community; to
help students in achieving healthy and wholesome family and community
relationships.
The objectives of Home Economics are:
1. To help students prepare themselves for home and family living.
2. To provide certain experiences which are preparation for professional
home economics employment.
3. To provide the home economics education curricula which will qualify
the person to meet requirements.
 To ensure that the female students learned to manage their home and family
better, Richards and Beecher divided the study of home economics into seven
areas:
1. Cooking,
2. Child development,
3. Education and community awareness,
4. Management and design of the home,
5. Sewing and textiles,
6. Budget and economy,
7. Health and hygiene.

5. Human and family studies

 Foods and Nutrition:

In home economics education, students learn which nutrients are
necessary for human health and maintenance of life and which food includes
such nutrients, as well as the knowledge, skills and techniques related to
cooking that make it possible to enjoy eating foods without reducing the
nutrient value. Food is essential it provides vital nutrients for survival, and helps
the body function and stay healthy. Food is comprised of macronutrients
including protein, carbohydrate and fat that not only offer calories to fuel the
body and give it energy but play specific roles in maintaining health.
 Textiles and fashion designing :
Clothing & Textile is one of the most important subjects of Home
Economics. It is a job related and practical oriented subject. By passing this
subject a student can achieve artistic as well as technical skills. Textiles have an
assortment of uses, the most common of which are for clothing and for
containers such as bags and baskets. In the household, textiles are used in
carpeting, upholstered furnishings, window shades, towels, coverings for tables,
beds, and other flat surfaces, and in art.
 Interior and environmental design:
Interior design is about creating the most efficient layout to make the
most of a room's potential in terms of use and aesthetics while taking into
account the characteristics of the space and the style desired. The interior design
of your workspace represents a unique opportunity to tell a compelling story to
your customers about where your business came from and what you want to
accomplish. It adds real value to your organization, builds your brand
awareness, and highlights your corporate characteristics.
 Art and design
Home economics is "the art and science of home management," meaning
that the discipline incorporates both creative and technical aspects into its
teachings. It’s include painting, sketching and crafting.
 Human and family studies:
Family and Human Development (FHD) is one of the major disciplines
and an integral part of Home Economics which describes, classifies and
explains the development and behavior of an individual from birth to maturity
and old age.
