I. The HISTORY OF HOME ECONOMICS

a. Home Economics in other country
 Over the years, home economists have made
significant contributions to strengthening programs for
women, families and children in other countries
(O'Toole and Nelson 1988) and educating women
formally and informally, improving understanding and
appreciation of other cultures, improving the health of
the population and improving the process of changing
(O'Toole et al. 1988).
I.1 Who is the founder/proprietor of this field?
 Ellen Swallow Richards 1842-1911 Who was the first
woman to attend Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and later became the first female teacher.
She started Home Economics Movement. She
concentrate on applying scientific principles to
domestic situations
I.2 How does Home Economics develop year by year?
(Include years and the people behind it)
 FCS is taught in many tertiary and continuing
education institutions around the world as an elective
or mandatory class in secondary education. Often
elementary education is also taught. The International
Federation for Home Economy, founded in 1908,
coordinates international cooperation in this area.
 CANADA - Home economics is not studied in the
majority of primary schools (K-6) and public schools
(K-8) in Canada. As part of a physical education
program, general education in health is offered. There
is no unique home economical course in high schools
or secondary schools, but students can take similar
courses such as family study, food and nutrition or
health and safety. Health and safety. 1911-1959
 GERMANY - Between 1880 and 1900, Ida von
Kortzfleisch, a Prussian noble woman and a former
German feminist, introduced the schools idea in

Reifenstein. Reifenstein refers to the municipality of

Reifenstein im Eichsfeld, a site of the first permanent
school in Thuringia. Reifensteiner Verband comprised
from 1897 till 1990 about 15 own schools and
cooperated with more operators. Around 40
wirtschaftliche Frauenschulen, rural economist women
schools were related to the Reifensteiner idea and
movement and permitted higher education for women
already in the German Kaiserreich. The 1913
doctorate of Johannes Kramer compared various
concepts of home economic education worldwide and
praised the method e.g. in Iowa
 INDIA - Many Education Boards in India, such as
NIOS, CBSE, ICSE CISCE, and various government
boards are teaching home science.
 INDONESIA - Home economics is known as family
education and welfare in Indonesia (Indonesian:
Pembinaan dan Kesejahteraan Keluarga, PKK). The
conference was established in Bogor in 1957. It was
established in 1972 as a government policy.
 IRELAND - In the 20th century, girls were taught
home economics in the secondary junior cycle. In
1971, the credential was applied to the senior cycle,
at a moment when school fees were abolished. In the
following decades, more children were learning the
subject in the modern co-educational community
schools. A decrease in practical topics not preferred
by criteria of third level joining, including home
economics, was seen in the 1990s in increased
participation in third level education.
 SOUTH KOREA - The area is most generally referred
to in South Korea as 'family studies' or family study.'
The camp started in the late 19th century in schools
taught by western missionaries. In 1929, at Ewha
Womans University in Seoul, the first department for
family science was created.
 SWEDEN - Home business is also classified in Sweden
as "home and market studies" (hem- och
konsumentkunskap). The subject is compulsory from
middle years to high school, but is considered one of
the smallest topics in the Swedish school system both
in private and private schools. The topic was only

called "Hemkunskap" for several decades and

centered strongly on the traditional common home,
family, and practical cooking and cleaning tasks. The
curriculum has been restructured following the
Swedish school reform in 2011, with a greater
emphasis on health, economics and the environment
which includes consumer economics and consumer
awareness.
 UNITED KINGDOM - In Britain Home Economics was
formerly a GCSE credential, but was substituted
[when?] by Food and Nutrition, the culinary side of
the food industry to economics.
Homeservices in Scotland were replaced with:
National 3, 4 and 5 practice cooking and National 3, 4,
5, Higher and Advanced Higher Health and Food
Technology. The SQA is the recipient.

 According to DepEd Order No. 31, s. 2013, EPP students must
participate in a minimum of 50 minutes of class engagement per

The Community
 Technical skills in agri-fishery, home economics, industrial arts,

crucial abilities that can help us fight against a world that is full
of laziness and stupidity. They will be our stepping stones to a

The legal basis for teaching EPP and TLE is Article II, Section 17
of the 1987 Constitution. “Give primacy to education, science and
technology, arts, culture, and sports to encourage patriotism and
nationalism, accelerate social progress, and promote comprehensive
human liberty and development,” the state declares. The Department
of Education's Order 92, series of 1988, entitled Clarification on the
Teaching of Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) as a
Learning Area in the New Elementary School Curriculum (NESC),
provides a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of EPP as a
new learning area in the elementary school curriculum.
DO 108, s. 2010 – Enhancing the Edukasyong Pantahanan at
Pangkabuhayan (EPP) Curriculum Toward Productivity was published
on October 26, 2010. Entrepreneurship, Information and
Communication Technology (I.C.T. ), Home Economics (H.E. ),
Agriculture (AG), and Industrial Arts (I.A.) are all included under the
EPP (I.A.). Learners in grades 4-6 are expected to have a basic
understanding of entrepreneurship and ICT, agriculture, home
economics, and industrial arts in order to enhance their own lives,
families, and communities.
EPP teaches students how to learn for the rest of their lives. It
focuses on mastering skills and processes; it is anemic and risky
without the correct work values. Technical skills in agri-fishery, home
economics, industrial arts, and entrepreneurship are developed
through EPP. These are crucial abilities that can help us fight against a
world that is full of laziness and stupidity. They will be our stepping
stones to a better future and a better way of life.

resources (faculty and facilities) as well as the local needs and resources of
the community. The 24 TLE exploratory courses focus on four basic common
competencies: 1) use and maintenance of tools and equipment; 2)
mensuration and calculation; 3) occupational health and safety procedures,
and 4) preparation and interpretation of technical drawing. Why are these
competencies described basic? Because they are competencies that students
must acquire in order that they can do higher level competencies. They are
also described common because these are true to all TR-based TLE courses.

Assignment
7 areas of home economics
Ceguera Technological Colleges
Francia, Iriga City
College of Technical Education
Bachelor of Technical – Vocational Teacher Education

Cooking
Since food preparation was central to homemaking, cooking is one of the
earliest disciplines in home economics. Early home economics programs
taught women how to cook a balanced meal, and included food safety and
preservation. Additionally, they studied how to properly set a table and
learned how to host meals, not only for their immediate families, but for
larger groups as well. This element of traditional economics still exists today
for both men and women in culinary schools, culinary programs for family and
consumer sciences students, and in nutrition degrees.
Child Development
home economics students were taught how to rear children. This included
learning about the stages of child development and how to correctly respond
to children at each stage. Today, students who study family and consumer
sciences still learn child development, which has become so significant that it
is, in many places, it's own major.
Education and Community Awareness
Since women were the first educators for their children, teaching them basic
reading and math skills before they entered school, it was significant for them
to understand how best to teach these skills. Though education and
community awareness, which included moral and ethical lessons, were
originally a part of the home economics education, it has become so
significant today that elementary education has branched into its own field of
study -- but one that is still dominated by women.

Home Management and Design

This area of study included cleaning and organization, which was significant
because homemakers were expected to keep the house clean and organized.
Today, individuals who study family and consumer sciences use these skills to
enter design fields where they thrive as designers, decorators, organization
gurus and real estate staging experts.

Sewing and Textiles

this skill came in handy when clothing needed mending. Because patterns
require certain types of materials, an understanding of textiles was useful.
This element of the traditional areas of home economics is still relevant today
Ceguera Technological Colleges
Francia, Iriga City
College of Technical Education
Bachelor of Technical – Vocational Teacher Education

as family and consumer science majors enter and thrive in fashion design and
merchandising fields.
Budgeting and Economics
Women are expected to understand how to spend wisely and make the most
judicious use of available funds. Today, this traditional element of home
economics is still relevant in family and consumer science programs as
students learn to properly budget, balance and invest income.
Health and Hygiene
This included sanitation, keeping the sick family member fed and quarantined
from the healthy, and at-home treatments for common illnesses.

Research and study the following topics:

V. The HISTORY OF HOME ECONOMICS

c. Home Economics in other country

V.1Who is the founder/proprietor of this field

 Ellen Richards influenced the field of home economics and all of

women's work. Considered the founder of the profession of home
economics, she became in 1873 the first woman to earn a Bachelor of
Science degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (after
earning an A.B. from Vassar in 1870).

V.2How does Home Economics develop year by year?

(Include years and the people behind it)

 One of the most influential early examples was the Treatise on

Domestic Economy for the Use of Young Ladies at Home (1841),
written by Catharine Beecher (1800-1878), an educator and social
reformer who was a half-sister of the abolitionist Harriet Beecher
Stowe. Beecher argued for the importance of domestic life and sought
to apply scientific principles to childrearing, cooking, and
housekeeping, and she also advocated access to liberal education for
young woman, although she opposed female suffrage on the grounds
that women should leave the public sphere to men.
 An important event in the development of home economics as an
academic field was the passage of the Morrill Act in 1862, which led to
the establishment of land-grant colleges in each state. Until that time,
American higher education had focused largely on teaching the classics
and on preparing young men for white-collar professions such as
medicine, law, and the ministry. The Morrill Act mandated a wider
mission for the institutions it funded, covering not only the traditional
Ceguera Technological Colleges

College of Technical Education
Bachelor of Technical – Vocational Teacher Education

curriculum, but also research and instruction in practical areas of

endeavor.
  Ellen Richards (1842-1911) was one of the major figures in the
emergence of home economics as a profession. As a young woman
who had grown up in modest circumstances in a small town in
Massachusetts, she defied convention by leaving home to attend the
newly founded Vassar College, from which she received a bachelor's
and later a master's degree. She went on to be the first, and for many
years the only, woman to earn a degree at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. After graduating, she taught at M.I.T. as an instructor
of sanitary education. She was also active in public health and social
reform efforts in the Boston area. Throughout her career, she
emphasized the influence of environment on health and well-being.
 Beginning in 1899, Richards, along with Melvil Dewey and other
educators and activists, organized a series of annual gatherings that
became known as the Lake Placid Conferences, because the first of
these, and several of the later ones, was held at Lake Placid, New
York. Out of these conferences, a movement took shape that slowly
defined itself and began pursuing specific goals. At the first
conference, participants agreed on the term "home economics," which
was held to be sufficiently broad to cover a wide range of concerns,
and they began energetic and successful efforts to promote the
teaching of home economics in secondary schools and in colleges and
universities. (Attentive readers will notice that the conference
proceedings use unfamiliar spelling-a product of Dewey's spelling
reform efforts.)
 In 1908, conference participants formed the American Home
Economics Association. This organization effectively lobbied federal and
state governments to provide funding for home economics research
and teaching, including adult education work through agricultural
extension services, leading to the rapid expansion of educational
programs. Over the following decades, home economists worked as
homemakers and parents, and also played significant roles in diverse
areas of public life. Many pursued careers in business, including the
food industry, textiles and clothing, hotel and restaurant management,
and interior design. Home economists also often found jobs in public-
sector and nonprofit organizations in such fields as public health,
institutional management, social work, housing, and, of course,
education. In addition, home economists contributed heavily to public
debate on a variety of policy issues, including social welfare, nutrition,
child development, housing, consumer protection and advocacy, and
standardization of textiles and other consumer products.

taught women how to cook a balanced meal, and included food safety and
preservation.
