PREFACE

Someone has rightly said that practical experience is far better and closer to the real world
than mere theoretical exposures. The practical experience helps the student to view the real
business world closely, which in turn widely influences his/her perceptions and
understanding of the real situation.
Research work constitutes the backbone of any management education program. A
management student has to research work quite frequently during his entire life span.
The research work entitled “A STUDY ON INVESTOR’S PREFERENCE TOWARDS
MUTUAL FUND IN COMPARISON TO OTHER INVESTMENT AVENUES.” is a
part of the project that contains the work done by me during the training period at ICICI
PRUDENTIAL MUTUAL FUND, NAVSARI.
True to the core, a properly and executed industrial training helps a lot in providing linkage
between the student and the industry. It develops the awareness of industrial approach to
problem solving based on a board understanding of the mode of operation of industrial
organization.
This project has offered me an opportunity to put all my efforts and the theoretical
knowledge to practice and enhance my knowledge, and at the same time, given me practical
experience in the field of finance. It is surely going to help me in my future projects too.
In the preparation of this project report, i have made every effort to ensure that all steps
involved in development of this project are adequately covered and the report be completed
in it. Any suggestions for improvement, if rendered, will be gratefully accepted.
I sincerely hope that this project will prove pure knowledge imparting, through provoking
and thus stimulating future research work on these guideline.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This study has been prepared with a specific purpose in mind. It outlines the history and
current scenario of the investments in mutual funds locally..
Every time and for everybody it is not possible to read the whole report but if a person
wants to have a quick overview but at a same time not a superficial look, executive
summary serves the purpose. Executive Summary as the name suggest truly summaries
the whole report so that the person can have an idea by just reading this part that should he
go ahead, whether this is of any importance to him or only a certain part. Executive
Summary has the brief introduction of the research project and even incorporating few
details where necessary.

This report is based on “A STUDY ON INVESTOR’S PREFERENCE TOWARDS

MUTUAL FUND IN COMPARISON TO OTHER INVESTMENT AVENUES.” The
report begins with the mutual funds industry overview followed by the company overview.

The Research Methodology, here shows as to how has the researcher progressed in the
entire report. Descriptive Research Design is used as researcher wants to gain a better
understanding of investor. Both primary and secondary data are collected and used. The
sampling unit consists of respondents who are engaged in making investments in various
investment avenues. A total of 204 respondents have been studied. Convenience Sampling
Method is used for collecting the responses. Software like Microsoft Excel and SPSS are
used for data analysis. Here the benefits of the report to the Researcher and to others are
also listed along with the limitations and the further scope of the study.

The main objectives of the study are to find out the most preferred investment avenue and
to know about the awareness of different investment avenues available in the market and
the risk and return associated with each investment.

The next part is the Literature review because from time to time during the making of this
report many researches already conducted on this topic have been referred, so out of those
many researchers, those few which have really helped in this report are mentioned along
with their conclusions.

The next is the most important and the core part of the study that is the Data analysis,
which is the heart of the report as to whatever calculation done to get the desired solutions
is shown here in the detail format. Step by step progress of the study is shown so that the
reader gets the complete idea on the ways the final solution is arrived at, here a small
interpretation is also given as to what is the result of the calculations. Also, the whole
analysis is done using SPSS software.

The next is the crux of the report that is the Findings of the study, after the thorough efforts
put down by me what findings came out which can be beneficial to the reader are being
listed down against the objectives set and this study clearly finds out the that investors
prefer to invest in mutual funds more than any other investment avenue available in the
market. Also, more than 80% investors are aware about mutual funds as an investment
avenue.

The later part consists of Conclusion that is from the whole study what the final word is
and whether the objective undertaken is served or not. Followed by the suggestions that
arises out of the study.

The Report ends with the Bibliography where all the sources from where various data are
collected including books, various researches and websites are enlisted.
