1. A dam 20 m long retains 7 m of water, as shown in Figure. Find the total resultant force acting on the dam
and the location of the center of pressure. Take into account that hcp in the Figure is the same Yp. Answer: F =
5550.53kN and Yp = 4.667 m

2. A vertical, rectangular gate with water on one side is shown in the Figure. Determine the total resultant force
acting on the gate and the location of the center of pressure. Answer: F = 84.59kN and Yp = 3.633 m

3. A vertical, triangular gate with water on one side is shown in Figure. Determine the total resultant force acting
on the gate and the location of the center of pressure. Answer: F = 1310lbf and Yp = 7.07 ft.
4. An inclined, circular gate with water on one side is shown in Figure. Determine the total resultant force acting
on the gate and the location of the center of pressure. Answer: F = 14.86kN and Zcp = 2.260 m.

5. A fishpond gate 6 ft wide and 9ft high is hinged at the top and held closed by water pressure as shown in
Figure. What horizontal force applied at the bottom of the gate is required to open it ? Answer: F = 235878 lbf.

6. A long solid cylinder of radius 0.8 m, articulated at point A, is used as an automatic gate, as shown in the
figure. When the water level reaches 5 m, the gate opens by rotating around the joint at point A. Determine a)
the hydrostatic force acting on the cylinder and its line of action when the gate opens and b) the weight Of the
cylinder per m of length thereof. Answer: F = 52.3kN, Wcil = 37.9 kN.
7. The 6-ft-diameterdrainage conduit of Figure is half full of water at rest. Determine the magnitude and line of
action of the resultant force that the water exerts on a 1-ft length of the curved section BC of the conduit wall.
Answer: F = 523 lbf
