Explain stream function and velocity potential. Differentiate between laminar and turbulent flow. Explain geometric, kinematic and dynamic similarities. Find the force exerted by a jet of water of diameter 100mm on a stationary flat plate, when the jet strikes the plate normally with a velocity of 30m/s. What is the purpose of fitting draft tube in a turbine? ‘Compare positive displacement and roto dynamic pumps. Draw the indicator diagram for a reciprocating pump and show the effect of acceleration on it. PARTB (4x 15 +60) Explain (i) Dynamic viscosity (ji) Kinematic viscosity. Give their dimensions. OR Explain Bernoulli’s equation and its limitations. A sub-marine moves horizontally in sea and has its axis 15m below the surface of water. A Pitot-Tube properly placed just in front of the sub-marine and along its axis is connected to the two limps of a U Tube containing mercury. The difference of mercury level found to be 170mm.
